Shame on you Guest! Are you too ashamed of what you're writing to add your name to the message? Come on now, Kate's done quite a good job of bringing folk music and songs to the attention of younger people - even my son has heard of her!!

Any song from "Kate Rusby & Kathryn Roberts" (Pure Records PRCD01) providing its sung by Kathryn. I agree with Guest, Kate is extremely over-rated.

Me and Srawb---s saw Kate and band at Wetherby and it was grand. Who cannot love 'Cruel'?

HarriWatts band love Kate Rusby ( Don't tell John Mac!).

Many artists are over-rated. She isn't and wouldn'd care anyway as it's obvious how much she loves playing, singing and performing to an audience. She's in this game for fun so there! However, she didn't sent us an Xmas card but she's easily forgiven.

My Young Man
Wild Goose (particularly the live version on the 'Cowsong' single)
Pretty much everything off 'Hourglass'

I'm a huge fan of her earlier work, but do slightly agree with GUEST in that some of her recent stuff is getting a bit 'samey'

I've always enjoyed Kate Rusby songs and I can't agree that she is overrated, although it is a critisism which could be leveled at many performers. As to her songs, I've always loved "The Recruited Collier".

Hey Ed, I was on the front row when the live version of Wild Goose on Cowsong was recorded! Claim to fame?
Kate's songs do tend to be samey and rather "pink" but she has done a great job over the last few years and doesn't deserve the knocking she's had recently.
My personal favourite is "Old Man Time"

I courted a Sailor

which sounds very different from "Cruel" or "The Goodman"

In a long set though, Kate's range is fairly static. I personally think she should allow John and Andy to let rip a bit more often

What a bunch of big fat sneers. Do I scent jealousy here?

I like the one with the chorus "runs all away, me boys, runs all away", and Maid of Llanwellyn, and the dashing Jimmy one; they're all from Ten. I'm just getting into Little Lights now.

She doesn't get to you straightaway, but when she does, she's haunting.

I fell in love with her recordings some time ago. Then I realized, yes, they all sound "samey". (English is not my mothertongue. Taking part at forums is a way to learn new words. "Samey" sounds great.)
But she is often accompanied by the best guitarist I know (Ian Carr); maybe she does not reach the heights of Niamh Parsons (whom I desperately love) but she is an excellent singer anyhow and has spread the folk repertoire outside the old cirles.
Huh - my favourite song? probably Our Town......

Kate's version of Drowned Lovers is currently top of my list, I grew up listening to Nick Jones and I love the variation between the two arrangements.
And on the Kate & Kathryn album, Exile is my very favourite (I've let my grammer slip a little there!).

But I have to agree, some of her stuff sounds the same.
Still love her though, she's out there and she's doing it, much respect!

I've read a few critics in the music press that have leveled the sameness judgment at her recordings but,Christ, when you're as good as she is is that such a bad thing? Besides, the variety and originality of her delivery and the accompaniments to the material is truly striking . I guess they want to see her dancing around at the Super Bowl exposing her solar nipple ring next.
My current favorite is the one about the blind harper who steals the King's brown. All time is probably As I Roved Out.vl

I'll have to add my name to those who think she is over-rated, Obviously Mike Harding disagrees with me because she seems to have air play every week on his show, does he have shares in the record company I wonder ........ me cynical, perish the thought
I wonder why someone like Sharon Fountain who to my mind can really put a song across is never given the same (or any) coverage or even Marie Little who is a contemporary of MH from their early days in the folk clubs of Salford and Manchester

'Fraid I have to agree with Mr Tash on the sameness of her material. She HAS done good, she's got traditional music onto a wider stage, so more power to her... suppose it comes down to the fact that English traditional music just isn't as good as Irish or Scottish. Perhaps it's English folk which is samey, not just Kate Rusby.
Controversial? Moi?
No, I really do believe it. The best toons & songs come from our Celtic brethren.
And don't ANYBODY tell me how good the Watersons are. I hear better singers and musicians than them (Martin Carthy partially excepted) at damn near every session I go to.
Over to you lot...

The Unquiet Grave. And yes, although her stuff is getting a tad samey, why mess with a winning formula? You might as well accuse Vin Garbutt of being samey becuase he consistently writes thought-provoking songs and makes audiences wet themselves with laughter with the same stories time and time again!

I really like her singing and particularly the Hourglass album. I've seen her in concert and she's a great performer too.

The one thing I don't quite understand (probably related to the "They all sound the same" comment is why she "flattens out" (my term) the melodies of well-known songs. At any rate, she changes them a bit here and there, not for the better in my opinion. The melodies seem to lose their most appealing (sometimes modal I guess) qualities and just sound very bland. I think this is the problem more than her singing. And she has a beautiful voice and it doesn't seem that the normal range of these songs would present a problem to her. And she certainly has a strong background in traditional music and would be familiar with these types of traditional melodies. Not sure why she does it, but it's the one thing that really detracts from her music for me.

Well, that being said, some favorites are The Maid of LLanwellyn (done with the Poozies), Wild Goose, As I Roved out, Annan Waters, and Bold Riley.

Mmmm ... lot of discussion and adulation re Kate Rusby. Nice sound; very simple but seductive double drop D tuning; top notch backing etc but you should go to the source of Kate's inspiration (I suspect anyhow) and listen to the "real deal" here - Sharon Fountain.

If, like me, you prefer your trad-folk female vocalists to be non-saccharin and samey, and you want guitar playing and singing with genuine grab you by collar "grit" and "punch" - then check out Sharon. She's also fom Barnsley (where Kate as a young lass no doubt saw her and thought - "I must try that style"), obviously older (and yes, dare I say it, much more experienced).

See her at one of her gigs - it'll cost you less than a fiver (most probably nowt at all), you'll actually be able to sit close and even talk to her during the interval. She'll be very embarrassed if you ask her for an autograph though.

Seriously - look her up, and listen/get wise

Kate Rusby - now there's a fine young up n' coming singer. With a little more practice she'll take a notch up to intermediate level guitarist too.
Who's Sharon Fountain folks? - Is she worth "looking up"?

Perhaps we should start a new thread about Sharon Fountain! She is a great singer and guitarist and has the added bonus of scaring many of my male friends to death.
Sharon is a teacher from Barnsley who sings traditional, excellent self-penned and contemporary material. Check out her version of Jethro Tulls "Heavy Horses!"

traditional song she's recorded: "the white cockade"
song she's written: "underneath the stars"

both of the those song lyrics can bring me to tears...esp. the sorrow in her voice as she sings them.
