Hmmm. That might be a tough one. Here are the words to the "Ave Maria" prayer in Spanish, but I don't think that's what you want:

"Dios te salve, Maria; llena eres de gracia; el Senor es contigo; bendita tu eres entre todas las mujeres, y bendito es el fruto de tu vientre, Jesus.

Santa Maria, Madre de Dios, ruega por nosotros, pecadores, ahora y en la hora de nuestra muerte. Amen."

My mother died a few days ago. I am looking for the Ave Maria that my grandmother and mother sang during the rosary. We will want to sing this song we sang as children, but the only verse we remember is:

The rosary is next week, Thursday the Dec. 2, 2010. If anyone has

The Ave Maria consists of three parts:
1. The Angel's salute (Luk. 1, 28)
2. Elizabeth's praise (Luk 1, 42)
3. A short prayer for assistance in extremis.
The first two parts were used in the liturgy since the 11th century, the third part was added in the 15th century.
It is part of the rosary, which is not used in the reformated churches.

Gounod's Ave Maria isn't highly esteemed in the Lutheran church, not because of its text but its musical quality which seems to be more on the saucy side. Who needs Gounod if we have a lot of pure Bach? I wouldn't leave a Lutheran church when hearing it there but be more than astonished.

When singing it you should use the Latin text to which it was originally composed.

The English "translation" is nothing of the sort! It is a modification of the words of the Lord's Prayer to more or less fit to the tune. Marianism is deeply frowned upon in almost all Protestant churches, and singing "Ave Maria" in any such church (other than very "high" CofE) would probably result in many members of the congregation either walking out or getting very huffy indeed!

Blame Luther et al!

According to The Book of World-Famous Music, the Bach part of this "Ave Maria" is the first prelude, in C Major, from the Well-Tempered Clavier. The first printed edition of this book may have been as late as 1800, although Bach died in 1750. The melody of Gounod's "Ave Maria" first appeared in print with the title "Meditation" about [sic] April 26, 1853, without words, for piano and violin solo with organ accompaniment. In 1856, words were added, but not the words of the "Ave Maria"; the title remained "Meditation." The composition was finally published with the "Ave Maria" lyrics about [sic] August 1, 1859.

The lyrics posted above are the standard "Ave Maria" used by the Roman Catholic Church, with a few phrases repeated. I thought there was a well-known Latin "Ave Maria" that used lyrics that we a bit different, but I couldn't find it just now and my memory isn't what it used to be. As Masato said in this thread (click), the words of Schubert's Ave Maria was originally not based on Latin but taken from Sir Walter Scott's "Hymn to the Virgin" in The Lady of the Lake - but I'm thinking of another on in Latin. Anybody know what "Ave Maria" I'm thinking of? Maybe I'm thinking of a Latin setting of Schubert that's different from the one I posted in this thread, something with the words "ave verum" (hail, truth) in one line - is there one?

"Give to us thine aid" sounds like something from one of those Lord's-Prayer-derived sets of English lyrics. They are not translations, or even anything close to such -- they completely change not only the words and sentiments, but the person to whom they are addressed.

You needn't have studied Latin to realize that "Ave MARIA" is addressed to Mary, not to God the Father, or Christ, or any other male figure.

This deliberate suppression of the Catholic prayer to Mary Mother of God sure seems unnecessarily subversive to me -- and I'm an *ex*-Catholic! Smacks of a black-hearted Protestant plot to me... ;^)

I expect all the Goddess-worshipping neo-pagans out there to be with me on this one...

Thanks also to you PoppaGator and you certainly deserve an Amen for the translation. Unfortunately the last time I sang this piece was in the late sixties at my sister`s wedding in Ireland and just before the voice broke, so I can hardly rememeber any of the English lyrics. I think one part towards the end went something like: "give to us thine aid". Like I said, I have now practiced it a bit and the old latin is returning to the hard disc in my head, so I will do my best with the original.

I thought the English "translation" was pretty strange; the actual translation is, of course, the Hail Mary prayer so familiar to anyone who has ever been Catholic. Some of the phrases are repeated multiple times to fit the music, but the "Ave Maria" is nothing more or less than the "Hail Mary" in its original Latin form.

I think you're making the right choice by going with the Latin, like most singers always have. Those weird English lyrics are unfamiliar for a reason.

Interseting - the latin in that piece is the Ave Maria - but the English is a paraphrase on the Lord's Prayer rather then a translation of the 'Ave'

Urgent Request!

Please can someone out there help!

My Mother-in-law died two days ago after a long illness. Her last wish was to come home and be among her family for Christmas and see everyone one last time. She had a very dignified death.

The funeral will take place on Wednesday 31st and a finaly request was if I could sing Ave Maria (not the Shubert version, but the Bach- Gounoud version. I used to sing this as a boy soprano in Ireland many many moons ago in English, but I have forgotton the lyrics. I am also expected to play the guitar as well.

I realize this a very difficult piece for the guitar, but if I could find the lyrics and guitar chords I might give it a try.

Can anybody help me please?
