Well before Updike got into the act, there was song whose chorus went:
Run rabbit, run rabbit, run run run
Don't give the farmer his fun, fun, fun
He'll get by without his rabbit pie,
So run, rabbit, run, rabbit, run, run, run, run....
Anyone know the whole song?

Run Rabbit Run
(Noel Gay & Ralph Butler)

On the farm, every Friday
On the farm, its rabbit pie day.
So, every Friday that ever comes along,
I get up early and sing this little song:

Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run!
Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run!
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Goes the farmer's gun.
Run, rabbit, run, rabbit, run.

Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run!
Don't give the farmer his fun! Fun! Fun!
He'll get by
Without his rabbit pie
So run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run!

Run, run rabbit run
Dig that hole, forget the sun,
And when at last the work is done
Don't sit down it's time to start another one

For long you live and high you fly
But only if you ride the tide
And balanced on the biggest wave
You race toward an early grave.

I think it was performed by Flannagan and Allen but I don't remember there being anymore verses.

I remember a tale that suggested the song was inspired by an incident in which a German plane was seen strafing a field with rabbits in it. Can that be true?

I once (20 yrs ago or more) heard a storyteller tell a tale of "How rabbit got his long ears & long back feet" which included having the kids join her on the "Run Rabbit, run rabbit, run run run!" part. I'm wondering if there is a song now.

From: Jim Dixon

RUN RABBIT RUN
Written by Noel Gay & Ralph Butler
As sung by Flanagan & Allen on Decca (3184 A), 1940, which you can hear at the Internet Archive.

On the farm, every Friday,
On the farm, it's rabbit-pie day,
So, ev'ry Friday that ever comes along,
I get up early and sing this little song:

Run, rabbit! Run, rabbit! Run! Run! Run!
Run, rabbit! Run, rabbit! Run! Run! Run!
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! goes the farmer's gun.
Run, rabbit! Run, rabbit! Run! Run! Run! Run!

Run, rabbit! Run, rabbit! Run! Run! Run!
Don't give the farmer his fun, fun, fun.
He'll get by without his rabbit pie,
So run, rabbit! Run, rabbit! Run! Run! Run!

[Flanagan & Allen then repeat the last 2 verses, with one of them doing a sort of scat counterpoint.]

[The following verses are copied from ingeb.org. I don't know their source.]

Run, run rabbit run
Dig that hole, forget the sun,
And when at last the work is done
Don't sit down; it's time to start another one.

For long you live and high you fly
But only if you ride the tide
And balanced on the biggest wave
You race toward an early grave.

[Recorded by Flanagan & Allen, Chas & Dave, Bob Crosby, Glenn Miller and the Andrews Sisters, and Harry Roy & His Orchestra]

I have found an extra 2 verses from this popular old song, they are;

Run Adolf, Run Adolf, Run, Run, Run,
Now that the fun has begun, gun, gun;
P'raps you'll just allow us to explain,
What we did once, - we can do again.

We're making shells by the ton, ton, ton.
We've got the men and the mon, mon, mon.
Poor old soul, - you'll need a rabbit-hole,
So, run Adolf, run Adolf, run, run, run.

Hope this helps. Cheers from Australia.

Regards, John

The song was written in answer to a comment from Hitler when he said he'd invade Britain and feast on rabbit pie.

Or- the first German raid on Scapa Flow in the Orkneys, when only a rabbit was killed. Or- just about rabbit pies on Friday ???

But the song wanted might have been this one all these years:

We sang a slightly different version when I was little which was -

Run Rabbit Run Rabbit run, run, run,
Here comes the farmer with his gun, gun, gun
He'll get by, without his rabbit pie,
So run rabbit run rabbit run, run, run.

Oooh - how the other half lives!!!

Run Harry! Run Harry!
Run, run, run!
Here comes the brother-in-law
With his gun, gun, gun,
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Goes the brother's gun,
Run Harry! Run Harry!
Run, run, run!
Don't give the brother his fun!
Fun! Fun!
They'll get by without their Royal pie
So run Harry, run Harry,
Run! Run! Run!

(Apologies to Flanagan & Alan)

I hadn't seen this thread before, but was amused by the post from 2004 with the lyrics :

Run, run rabbit run
Dig that hole, forget the sun,
And when at last the work is done
Don't sit down; it's time to start another one.

For long you live and high you fly
But only if you ride the tide
And balanced on the biggest wave
You race toward an early grave.

Did nobody else recognise Pink Floyd? ("Breathe" from "Dark Side of the Moon")
