Although this thread died a natural and probably well-earned death some months ago, it was the first one I found appropriate (more or less) for noting that the March/April 2005 issue of AARP magazine has a foldout spread on "Hollywood's Hottest" (old people have great imaginations?) featuring 7 "classic" (and respectable - essential for AARP) ladies.

Not a centerfold, it's the front cover, but there are additional pictures inside. "Glamorous" but fully clothed pictures.

A comment inside notes that a major factor in the photo shoot was finding 7 classy "ladies of mature age" that could be put in the same locale simultaneously without raging ego warfare, but they do look pretty good. (in an AARP sort of way.)

I've been trying to remember the name of the photog who did the same thing many years ago. I believe Smithsonian mag may have noted the earlier one in a nostalgia article a few months ago. Does anyone remember?

Somewhat seriously, it may be just as well we haven't been seeing female genitals in "real" movies. You wouldn't, generally, unless someone made a rather crass effort to expose them. And nudists I know are the last people to condone exposing young people to sexuality that they aren't ready to understand or keep in perspective.
But sometimes the "perv" in me feels that it ain't fair; if a gal gets to see a guy nekkid at all, she gets to see everything.

I've always loved the remark Robert Redford made in an interview, that he thought women got more attractive as they grew older. Many of the older actresses working were much more attractive than when they were younger because they had found themselves and grown into their looks, as it were.

Hollywood is a fascinating artificial mirror for our rather warped views of attractiveness, power and sexuality. Where else are we expected to believe that men of the age of Richard Gere, Steve Martin, Kevin Costner, Michael Douglas, Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis (yep they're all around my age) have gorgeous women of 25 falling head over heels for them, while actresses in the same age bracket (Kathleen Turner, Meryl Streep for example) can't get work on the screen unless a sexless matron is called for?
I for one think women of forty and older are much more attractive, interesting, stimulating. They are, one might say, "fully realized". Clothed or naked, I salute them!

Interesting thing about POSSLQ, the US Internal Revenue Service actually adopted this acronym within the mass of the federal tax code at some point during the seventies. When the (then) fledgling religious right caught wind of this, a mighty shout went up to the heavens, with much wailing and gnashing of teeth. The fear that (gasp) living together (in sin) would destroy the fabric and value of marriage was on every preacher's sermon outline.

We both enjoy naturism and at the two clubs we usually go to, a high percentage of the members are over 50, but there are some very attractive mature ladies to be seen - as well as Linda of course.

The SWMBO = She Who Must Be Obeyed has been around long enough that I thought everyone knew it.

POSSLQ = Person of Opposite Sex Sharing Living Quarters (pronounce it "poss el cue") is one I've never cared for much, because I first encountered it in a very stilted and badly written "socialogical essay." It probably dates at least to the 60s.

The other one might encounter is SO = Significant Other. Although some have objected that it refers to a "shack up" mate, I've found it most often used by married couples when in the presence of other couples of uncertain situation, as a matter of politeness when explanations are unnecessary. It seems rather neutral to me.

As one with some vicarious experience of older women, I would interject that at my last high school reunions, age had done a bad turn on quite a few - of both sexes. But the ones who still looked good looked VERY VERY good. The funny thing is that those who looked the best seemed also to be the ones willing to enjoy and be happy with themselves. Maybe the others just forgot how(?).

(As there are very few older than me still around, it's difficult to comment on older older women. My grandkids are deteriorating noticably.)

No, but Sarandon herself takes pride in being the oldest sexual woman in film, (not true) and once remarked that her breasts were "over-rated", which sort of spoiled the fun of looking at her tits, for me. She started looking like that woman in War And Peace, Pierre's wife, who had been looked at so much she seemed glazed by it.

Sure, Sarandon is quite pretty, Helen Mirren is beautiful and sexy (she can really act), and so on, but what's the fun in noticing that obviously beautiful older women are beautiful? Pick anyone, look for it, it's there. You have to make decisions about it--maybe even without highly trained photographers, make-up people and stylists there helping you along. When you're too tired to pay much attention, you can still look at the celebrity cuteniks for mindless relaxation. Looking is hardly even an active verb anymore, it's something done to you by others,and impressionable people who are young or insecure or both are getting seriously fucked-up by it.

Homeless--go look at the link to the photos of Helen Mirren, and find the one where she is looking into a mirror putting on her makeup (it's as it you're looking through the mirror at her). That expression is amazing, so complex, knowing and come-hither at the same time. Of course I wouldn't mind looking like that in a bustier (how is that spelled?) and her age is clearly what gives her the ammo to manage that kind of expression.

Do you remember early last year when the woman in Manhattan came forward and admitted that as a 19-year-old intern she had had an affair with JFK? They used that as a question on the NPR program Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me! and one of the panellists said "he should have had an affair with a 49-year-old woman" and went on to illustrate how she would spit in his eye as crouch down on the floor of the limo the way the younger woman did, etc. It was pretty funny, but also right on!

Last year, I went to see "Sugar Babies" as put on by a local troupe. There were 2 ages of women in that show - a generation younger than I, and a generation (or more) older. The young girls would try to do "sexy" moves, and look like a wooden puppet being bounced on the end of a stick. All jerky and awkward. You almost felt sorry for them, and it wasn't at all appealing. Those crusty, old great-grandmas tho... Whew - They could sure bump and grind to make your blood run hot. They had moves, looks, and grace that the young girls couldn't even pretend to know about. Mick's right - there's a whole lot more to attractiveness than just what the body looks like. How to use that body is something those older ladies know that this generation is completely ignorant of. My first inclination when seeing this thread was to post something stupid like: "You mean women over 25 are actually NAKED under their clothes?? EEEEEWWWWWWWWWW!!!"

Living in America (or any western country, for that matter) nowadays is to be fed a daily diet of crap that would lead a space alien, attempting to learn about us through only our media, to believe that the entire population consists of anorexic blondes and ripped GQ centerfolds under the age of 30.

How boring.

Whilst nursing my New Year's hangover yesterday afternoon I took advantage of the "Twilight Zone" marathon on the Sci-Fi channel...ever see the episode called "Number 12 Looks Just Like You"? The premise is that sometime in the future (Rod Serling makes it the year 2000--droll, innit?) when people reach maturity they will be "transformed" into perfect specimens according to the aesthetic standards of their society; they basically pick one of several available models from a catalogue & then go about wearing badges so people will know it's their mother & not the lady next door, etc.

It was pretty amusing, not least because the aesthetics of this high-tech future bore a striking resemblance to those of, oh, 1962, but the point was nevertheless taken that when we narrow our idea of what is beautiful, or even acceptably "attractive" to such an artificial, shallow & superficial degree, we risk a pretty homogenized (and dull as hell!) world.

In this day, when a television program like "Extreme Makeover" has people literally competing to be surgically altered to better resemble the artificial images force-fed us by Madison Avenue, the notion doesn't seem too sci-fi, does it?

For my part, I had the opportunity to see Vanessa Redgrave play Prospero(!) in a production of "The Tempest" at the new Globe Theatre a few years ago, and as groundlings we were literally 10 feet from her...the woman's face is so arresting, so full of character & intelligence, so BEAUTIFUL, that the notion of wanting to exchange it for that of someone without a tenth of her wisdom or experience is nothing short of obscene, not to say just plain dumb.

Ginger? Tina Louise? I never liked her looks or attitude, but Dawn Wells was my childish model of ideal womanhood, maybe because of the coconut-cream pies. She still looks cute as a button. But when did the Professor morph into the Skipper?

It takes more attention and perception to see any sort of beauty that isn't being foisted on you daily in ads and junk, and people ought to be made to do nude life drawing as a condition of primary education. Maybe we wouldn't have these visual social diseases if we trained people to look for themselves?

As a painter I can't bring myself to do nudes anymore, except a few of my wife, but I've done one very close-up face which gets at the same quality, and looks nude, but without the cheesy associations and stylistic problems. On the one hand it seems so natural to paint nudes, on the other hand it's like the writer who said that bad writers use up all the good words.

An after thought. I guess I am somewhat turned off by the whole concept of age being a determining factor. I can tell you that I have met plenty of women (and men for that matter) that were younger than myself with the same qualities that I find fascinating. I love spending time with people that challenge one on a number of levels.

Those with the disparaging comments about Tyne Daly base their view of sexuality on visuals and nothing more. I have found that the most sexually fascinating women are the ones whose company I enjoy, whose personality and intellect make them absolutely desirous. If I want visually appealling I will pick up any of the books out there that are designed to appeal to hormonal young men who lack the miles to understand that there is so much more.

There is a woman who comes to some of our concerts. She is a Danish woman in her late 60's, maybe even 70. She is so beautiful as to be hard to describe. When you sit and talk to her, and you look into those eyes, your skin will tingle. And when you talk with her about politics, issues of the day, her travels, your travels, men, women..... it is impossible not to be completely attracted to her on all levels.

Older women naked for the sake of being naked would not appeal to me anymore than looking at centerfolds does, or going to topless bars. They bore me and I haven't been to one, or read one, in years. But you give me a chance to spend an evening with a fascinating older woman with stories to tell and a vivacious attitude, and I will take it in a heartbeat over the younger alternative.

Oh.....list of women I would love to have that chance with.

Emmylou.....even though she isn't older to me (I'm 53)

Funny, I've been cleaning my garage today and found a box of magazines that are keepers. One of them is the Playboy issue from 8 or 10 years back with all beautiful women over 40. Many of them over 50. A reminder to myself to stay in shape, eat well, and who knows, maybe grace these pages when I'm 60. :)

Julie Newmar and Tina Louise (Ginger, on Gilligan's Island) have not aged gracefully. The last time I did a search on either of them, they were trying too hard to look like they USED to 30 years ago, not what the can look like today for their ages and still be beautiful women.

The Rylestone ladies became my heroes when I saw that calender. It was funny and tasteful, something yopu almost never see these days. I might point out that a bunch of ordinary ladies of a certain age, who haven't, like Ms. Loren, or Ms. Bardot made a careeer out of being beautiful, who have neither the time nor the money those women do to make themselves beautiful, and still think they look good enough to pose nude, are something pretty special.

It is often so easy to laugh at the American culture beast as it thrashes itself into a narcissistic frenzy. It is hard to imagine anything sillier than the amazing "discovery" (shock, horror) that there are sexy older women in the world. A truly mediocre movie arrives, and suddenly older women exist.

The names Simone Signoret, Sophia Loren, Vanessa Redgrave etc., etc. seem to ring no bells.......
