It's the weekend of Valentine's Day. Once again I'm too far away to participate, but it has always sounded like a lot of fun, so I'm starting this thread just to get people thinking about it. The food is usually quite good for camp food, and the price is not bad..60 or 70 I think. mg |

RainyCamp '04 A Folk-Singing Weekend Sponsored by the Seattle Song Circle of the Seattle Folklore Society February 13-15, 2004 Location: Carnation, Washington (about 45min east of Seattle) Cost: by 12-15-03 $69 ($100 Canadian) for adults and teens 12 and over ($3 additional discount for paid members of Seattle Folklore Society or reciprocating groups—only applies to early registrations) $53 ($75 Canadian) for children 3-12, free for children under 3 after 12-15-03 $72 ($105 Canadian) for adults and teens 12 and over $56 ($80 Canadian) for children 3-12, free for children under 3 Location—RainyCamp is held at Camp Don Bosco in Carnation, Washington. Maps will be sent with your receipt, starting early December. Accommodations are dormitory buildings with rooms containing 6-8 bunk beds. Each building has toilet facilities, but showers are in separate buildings. Bedding is not provided. RV's can bring you to the site, but may not be used as dormitories (camp rules). Workshops—There are a number of scheduled workshops on Saturday and Sunday, and always space left for do-it-yourself ones. As RainyCamp is an offshoot of Seattle Song Circle, most are in song circle format (participants take turns to lead, request, or pass), but some may be presentation or teaching. Subjects in past years have ranged from Celtic, Bawdy and Parodies to Gospel, French-Canadian and Songwriting. As both subjects and leaders are drawn from the attendees, we need suggestions and volunteers—if you're interested, please let us know by Dec 10 if possible (when indicating time wanted, don't be shy &emdash; if a workshop runs out of steam earlier, just break up & go to another one). Although the primary focus of the weekend is singing, instrumental jams are common and space is available for them. Meals—Friday night is a potluck. The rest of the meals will be catered, and will include both meat and vegetarian dishes. In the interest of keeping prices as low as possible, they will be basically 'camp food', though as nutritious as we can afford, but feel free to bring anything additional you want (or need, if you're on a special diet). Children—Kids are always welcome, but must be supervised, and their parents are responsible for seeing that this is done. We have little scheduled so far in the way of specific kids' activities—please indicate if you'd be interested in helping us develop some (eg nature walks, games, etc). Payment—We can no longer accept charge cards, but do take cash, check or money order. There will be no discounted rate for stays of less than the full weekend. If the weather makes getting to the camp impossible (as opposed to just difficult), we will refund as much of your money as we can after deducting non-recoverable expenses. Otherwise, refunds will be as follows: • up to 2 weeks before the event, 100% • to 3 days before the event, partial (again, depending on expenses) • less than 3 days before the event, no refund. We do offer several work scholarships for Friday setup and Sunday final clean-up—check with us as soon as possible if you are interested—they're a great way to a free weekend. Well, the official deadline has passed, but if you are just finding out about the camp or just found out you can go, it doesn't hurt to contact Jean Smith just in case. Sometimes they have last minute cancellations. If you can't make Rainy Camp, check out Singtime Frolics (near Portland) in March. (Just started a thread for Singtime today.) Heck, even if you CAN make Rainy Camp, come to Singtime too! |

About 70 people attended. The potluck Friday evening was varied and delicious. The song circle lasted into the wee hours. Breakfast was fresh cinamon rolls eggs, oatmeal. Workshops on Saturday morning included;show tunes, harmony, catches, skipping, songs in other languages, first favorites, organic google and more I don't remember. Dinner was tacos and choice of three soups. Since it was Valentines Day spouses were invited to come up for Dinner and The evening concert. The evening concert was wonderful people singing old favorites, singer songwriters doing there latest or most topical compositions, traditional tunes etc. at least 35 different groups or performers. Afterwards there was a free form song circle lasting again into the wee hours with glorious harmonies. Sunday morning Dutch Babies for breakfast (a rainy camp tradition)followed by more workshops I went to economics 101, songs haveing to do with money or labor or anything you could think of to tie into the title. Then lunch cleanup and a final potpuree song circle till about three pm. still singing on the car ride home, still sing at work on wednesday. |

Prior to my sugery, I seriously thought about attending, this would have been my first. But reality set in and I knew it would not be possible this year. Very likely for next year though! The concert by itself featured mostly new songs, not many old traditional ones. Paddy Graber sang a wonderful song he said he doesn't usually sing in public, but sang because it was Valentine's day. I don't remember the name of it (sorry). He did have his CD for sale there also. It was very nice to finally have faces to place with so many names from here at Mudcat! Barbara and Mary and Stewart, to name just a few. SRS |

The culprit who sang "You Can't Be a Pirate" is Bruce Baker, and if you know his email I'd appreciate having it passed on to me. In another thread we are looking for the the "whatsis" verse. Saw a lot of old and new friends, sang myself silly and hoarse, heard lots of wonderful songs, great food, and I suppose it wouldn't be RAiny Camp if it didn't rain. Someone came by our lunch table Sunday looking for the owner of a sweatshirt. It turned out to be Paddy Graber's and one of my tablemates suggested that perhaps he had lost track of it during a heated discussion about a song that he had with one of the camp's other octagenarians, Phil Thomas. Stilly River Sage was there, MudJack, mary garvey, and I can't remember who else from Mudcat. Blessings, Barbara |
