actually, there was a Chicago gangster that was captured in Kentucky. Around 1938. They thought he had something to do with the Valentine day murders

Danny Bailey is indeed an invention by Bernie Taupin!
In the DVD "Classic Albums - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" (released by Eagle Rock Entertainment) he says about the song: "Danny Bailey is John Dillinger, or Pretty Boy Floyd... He is my composite gangster. I just love creating characters!"
