"I heard this song from Mary Meyer McAleese who, along with her husband Danny, used to have a pub in St. Pete Beach called Grace O'Malley's (that 'Pirate Queen again!). Mary said she heard it at the singer's session at the South Sligo Summer School held in Tubbercurry in the late 90's. It had the title "Bottle of Stout" but Mary wasn't sure who the author was. Having subsequently tracked down Sean Mone, the author, he informed me that the title is "Lovers and Friends"."

I doubt if that was what Seán intended.

"A bit of a hoult" is Irish slang for hugging and kissing or perhaps as Martin said for sex.

When I was young lad long long ago we liked a bit of a hoult, but the Irish girls at that time would stop well short of actually engaging in full sex. 'Twas still highly enjoyable though. :)

A "holt" or "holte" is also a grove of trees or a thicket, hense, all that is needed is a bottle of stout and a place to hide away with one's lover.
Curiously, thickets of trees form and thrive because they provide favorable conditions for seeds to germinate.

Yes I spoke to him and was slightly embarress when he reminded me that he recorded it on his cd, I have it somewhere and if my memory serves me correctly I think that the words of all the songs are included in the blurb.

I tought it was a good night, I took my youngest brother along, it was his first time at the Góilín, he enjoyed it no end, he was mightly impressed with all the excellent singers and songs. I reckon that he will come along again under his own steam. Unlike me, he is a bit of an extrovert, so I'd put money on it that he will have a song prepared and will murder it in his own inimitable fashion, he has a passable voice, but his renditions are always performed as though he is auditioning for a part in an amateur production of the Mikado. I'm glad that the motto is "no standard set"

Hello Mudcatters, a happy new year to you all, I was at the Goilín Club in Dublin a couple of nights before Christmas, and I had the pleasure of hearing a lot of very fine singers, Phil Callery was there as a guest and he sang a number which had a chorus which included the lines,

"there's more friendship poured out in one bottle of stout than you'll find in statute or sermon"

I have been singing snatches of it since and I think that I would like to have it all. I have tried searching Mudcat and Google and others sites but I cannot track it down. Can Mudcatters help?
