Subject: Tune Req: Sephardic songs/ Era Escuro
From: Maffet

Hello,
for some time I research on sephardic songs and collect them. I browsed through all sephardic sites and also have Judy Frankel's book and many CD's, which is absolutly great source. But! Cant found anywhere tune to Era Escuro (not lyric, which is possible to found). I was curious if that song has probably some diffrent name, like for example Avram Avinu, which has at least two other diffrent names. Is there any other song book of only "sephardic" songs? I have learnt to sing it only from listening, which is easy, but I would like also to play it ... and ehm... what to say. I am somehow deff when I want to play what I hear... just can't catch it. Some songs goes easy like Espiritu de Dios, but I have problem to catch sephardic songs. There are another two songs I am interested in ... they are more known than first one "El Rey de Francia" and "La Prima vez". Do you know some source or another songbook with sheet music or midi's :-)

I couldn't find the music to any of the songs you mentioned, there are a number in "The Nico Castel Ladino Song Book" but unfortunately none under those titles
I don't know where you are based but Dr Alan Zinober at the Sheffield Jewish Bookshop may be able to help you

I think the lyrics should be posted, even though we haven't found the tune. I found these at Zemerl, but no tune. This page gives information on a recording.
I've been looking for a good Sephardic songbook and haven't found one. Judy Frankel's stuff is the best I've found so far.

Era Escuro

Era escuro como la media noche,
Quando la luna esclariendo 'stava,
Todo callado, todo 'stava'n silencio,
Como la nuve'n la escuridad.

"Miseravle, por qui vienes agora?
Arecordarme del mal que yo pasi?
Arecordarme de toda la mi vida?"
- Estas palavras yo le havlm.

It was dark, almost midnight as the moon was rising;
all calm, all bathed in stillness, like snow in obscurity.
"Miserable one! Why do you come now?
To make me recall the harm that I suffered?
To make me recall my whole life?!"
- Those were the words that I spoke to him...

Hear in MP3, in the folder Songs of the Sephardim. A great website. The vocalist on Era Escuro has a great voice! Lots to unload here.

Q this is great! Great! I downloaded all folder! Thank you! Thank you!
I know El Rey de Francia from Azam Ali and one lovely version from Owain Phyfe and I have found lyrics. It's great to sing. Unhappily I live in Prague so sources are very low. We have one recording artist who do sephardic songs and created songbook with most known 10 songs like Los Billbilicos or Durme, Durme. It's Jana Lewitova and many medieval bands use this songbook, so all this songs are a bit.... too frequent. :-) ... and there is so many other lovely songs around. For example tres Hermanicas are absolutly unknown songs just like Era Eascuro or others and I felt in love with them. I will surely search for The Nico Castel Ladino Song Book, you mentioned. It sound like a good source, I will try to find some page with list of songs included inside. Thank you again and wish you a lot of joy with music :-)

Q the link you posted for Maffet "Index Sefardi" is broke. But being it's 2011 and that was 2004 does not surprise.

Working on finding written sheet music for La prima vez. Have lyric from liner notes on Odessey by Owain Phyfe/New World Renaissance Band. But can't find sheet music or back ground on this particular song.

Any help you could give as I'm just learning the Mudcat Cafe would be most helpful. I participate in the SCA and have a passion for old music.

Thanks
Flannait (irish gaelic for red haired)

Well, part of it is archived at archive.org. Try this link (click). and this link. Most of the files I found listed were MP3 recordings, and they're not included in the archive. Too bad - looks like there were some good ones.

Thanks Q and Joe...

Still not much on La prima ves but I'll keep looking. The links you gave are a mother load of music and information for research into early music for the SCA bard types.

Thanks again
Flannait
