Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering Yorkshire From: Leadfingers Date: 19 Feb 04 - 01:19 PM I only got home today as I broke the journey with friends and family on the long trek South. I had a very enjoyable weekend and must apologise for blowing up,but if I am doing a song in Eminor and someone joins in in some other key at full volume I tend to NOT be very synpathetic. The Whole weekend was well worth the three hundred and something mile each way trip though. |

Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering Yorkshire From: Geoff the Duck Date: 16 Feb 04 - 03:51 PM By the way, we returned home via a visit to see the sea, so found ourselves at Saltburn before turning round and driving home via Guisborough. When we found ourselves passing the Globe, about four hours after leaving it, we almost called in to ask "By the way...Did you say Turn Righ or Turn Left at the end of the road..." A very enjoyable weekend. Many thanks. Quack!! Geoff. |
Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering Yorkshire From: Buddug Date: 16 Feb 04 - 03:29 PM Great Weekend. Thanks to Magician, Gillie, Tig, Badger, Col, Firecat and everyone who made it really good fun, including Mr. and Mrs. Duck and ducklings, especially my darts partner! Thanks to Fretwell for the pyrotechnics. The whizzbangs were impressive. I have never seen a rocket fly that high when not attached to a Saturn V. Great sessions throughout. Great to put names to faces. Hope to see you all soon Buddug |
Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering Yorkshire From: Mrs.Duck Date: 16 Feb 04 - 03:16 PM Back home safe and sound and after finding the kitchen under a pile of muck (teenagers!!!!)have opened a bottle - well we need it after all the fun of the weekend. It was great as was being given the honour of officially handfasting the happy couple as well as baking the cake. They are now well and truly duckfasted but I did use ribbon not duck tape! |
Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering Yorkshire From: Tig Date: 16 Feb 04 - 01:07 PM Back home to sleep and recover! A great weekend all round finishing late last night with a session which included Blues Man Roger Sutcliffe turning up. Nice to be able to put even more names to faces. We think we ended up with about 30 catters and induced a couple to get on their computers and join when they get a second. The 'Buy a Square' on Saturday night raised £44 which I will get to Bill\Sables as soon as possible. (We couldn't find the raffle tickets so names were put in the big tankard for drawing!). Thanks to Magician and Gillie for letting us loose in the Watering Hole for the weekend. I'm back there for a week and a bit next Saturday as they escape to Madeira for a 'honeymoon'. If you are around pop in but don't forget to sign the Mudbook. |

Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering Yorkshire From: Tig Date: 15 Feb 04 - 02:48 PM Hic says Mrs Duck having spent all weekend imbibing of the excellent alcohol here - as we all have! We got the pair of them handfasted and the broom jumped. They got 5 for artistic impression and about 9 for athletic style, however BOTH of them got 10 out of 10 for alcoholic content over the evening. Pictures to follow shortly. Unfortunately anyone turning up late missed out on the handfasting ale as we drank all 18 gallons on Friday evening. There were plenty of fireworks over the weekend but no one was seriously hurt. Thanks to the large rockets Whitby lifeboat was called out. Several of us are still here trying to empty another barrel of beer. |

Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering Yorkshire From: Bassic Date: 12 Feb 04 - 08:58 AM Davetnova, Try saying Gizburra (The G is hard as in Gold), I think that should be identifiable to the locals as Guisborough! Tig/Badger, If you get chance before you set off (if you are not there already that is!), I would love a Mudcat badge and so would Rock Chick. We will be ariving Friday night about 9.30 ish after dropping our stuff off at the 3 Fiddles B&B. |

Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering Yorkshire From: Raggytash Date: 11 Feb 04 - 12:07 PM Tyke, Once again you fail to amaze me with your unerring ability to get things wrong, I shall not be in Runswick Bay on the event of the February Yorkshire Gathering, thus going to Guisborough does not mean you will manage to avoid me. For those who get confused by George's ramblings, Wombat and I are holding a gathering in Milnsbridge, Huddersfield on the 13th of March, one spin off of which, is to raise funds for the Runswick Bay Rescue Boat. Now I don't believe in thread hi-jacking so please see the relevant thread and George .............don't do that George |

Not long now! |

Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering Yorkshire From: Mrs.Duck Date: 09 Feb 04 - 07:32 AM Handfasting is also one of the rituals adopted by the early church from pre christian ceremonies and in many churches the priest or vicar will still wrap his stole around the hands of the couple and say 'those whom god has joined' etc. This has also given rise to the term tying the knot as a euphimism for marriage. In the days when not every village had a church travelling priests would call round every few months. Couples wishing to get married in the meantime would 'tie the knot' and then jump over a broom - hence the expression 'living over the brush' referring to couples living together but not married. It all sounds like a jolly good excuse for a great weekend - Valentine's day too you old romantics! Can't wait - see you around six hopefully on friday. Jane |

Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering Yorkshire From: Catherine Jayne Date: 09 Feb 04 - 03:17 AM GUEST a Handfasting is a Pagan Wedding Ceremony where the hands are of the couple are tied symbolicaly before the God and the Goddess. The God and the Goddess are invited to give their blessing on the union which is either for a life time or because we believe in reincarnation for eturnity. The ceremony is normally conducted by a High Priest and a High Priestess where a circle is cast and the quaters (elements) are called. It is a very beautiful ceremony and the energy raised is amazing! |

All you have to do is send money for beer a request for your song or tune and we will sing and or play it and drink the beer for you. It's not a problem. Let's us try and cheer you up! However bad you are feeling now about not being able to go. It's not a patch on how you will be feeling when we all tell you what a great weekend we all had. Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering Yorkshire From: magician Date: 23 Jan 04 - 04:25 PM Update As Requested:- I had a double bypass 7 weeks ago. On Tuesday I saw the Consulant Surgeon who said that he dosen't want to see me again professionally. I opend the Pub last Friday and did three hours on the bar, on thursday I did the 6 till 8 evening shift and tonight the 5 till 7 shift. I've sent Clare to bed because she seems to be coming down with the 'flue that I am almost recovered from so am in charge tonight myself. I went out for a couple of hours by myself last night to the Abbey for a drink with Brian the landlord there. As long as I don't overdo things (which I have a tendancy to do) I am managing quite well. I get tired quite easily so am having to take things gently (no sniggering Tig). I will reply to all who have PMed or E-mailed over the weekend with confirmations. Looking forward to seeing you all at Valentines, Daffydd |
Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering Yorkshire From: Nick Date: 23 Jan 04 - 02:47 PM I'll send you a PM if that's ok. Not to be coy but until it's definite that the pub can do it - and that depends on what is involved and expected - I'd hate to cause any embarrassment on any fronts. I'll send you a PM and if it's ok to talk on the phone I'll give you a number as it's easier than typing! |
Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering Yorkshire From: Mrs.Duck Date: 23 Jan 04 - 11:28 AM Nick, a mudcat gathering is limited only by the space available to accomodate everyone. You wouldn't be stepping on anyones toes by organising a weekend, the more the merrier and the gatherings don't always attract the same crowds as festivals. They are a way to get to know people so noone should feel that they will be left out. A lot of us do know eachother now but many met for the first time at a mudcat gathering. As to the format, that depends on the venue. There are usually music and singing sessions, lots of drinking and if there is room we have had ceilidhs - we even had some belly dancing at the first Yorkshire gathering! Where in N.Yorks are you? Let us know what you are planning so we can keep a space in the diaries. |
Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering Yorkshire From: Nick Date: 23 Jan 04 - 10:22 AM Excuse a few naive questions but - 1)What is involved in a mudcat gathering? 2)Is it open to anyone? Do a lot of people tend to come? Are there sessions or performances or what? 3)Is it a 'closed' thing with everyone knowing everyone else or are new people made welcome and able to get involved? 4) For some time the landlord of our local pub where we play has been thinking of organising a music weekend sometime in the summer. Is it possible to start up a Mudcat gathering or is that treading on people's toes as we are in North Yorkshire too? Thanks |

Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering Yorkshire From: Tyke Date: 12 Jan 04 - 07:20 PM I went along with Aaardvark on Friday Night to the regular Folk Club at the Globe. What a great pint of Beer I though I did not like Cameron's!! All the very best to Daffydd and Gillie for a well-kept pub and a well-kept pint of beer if you are in the area call in. They deserve all the support and customers that they will get, of that I have no doubt. Good Folk Club that was well attended it was well worth the drive out from Whitby. The Folk Club was well attended with a resident group and plenty of floor singers. Aaardvark (Mick Haywood) informed me that there used to be a Club there many years ago and that Vin Garbut used to be a regular at the club. I can recommend Guisborough and the Globe for a visit and a great night. I shall definitely be there in February even if it is Friday the 13th!!!! There was also talk of St Patrick Night with the Blether men my advice get there early! Book a B & B and don't Drink and Drive! Cos. you will want to drink the Beer. Happy New Year from Tyke |
Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering Yorkshire From: Tig Date: 12 Jan 04 - 05:22 PM The Mudcat Watering Hole is The Globe, Northgate, Guisborough, North Yorkshire (or Cleveland if you like!). Guisborough is about 5 miles from Saltburn or 23 from Whitby for those who have festivaled at either place. It's the pub Magician (Daffydd) and Gillie (Clare) run in that town. Real ale, no jukebox, friendly locals, good acoustics. As far as I know things will kick off Friday evening and run all weekend. The pub number is 01287 201157 if you want to give them a ring. |

Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering From: Catherine Jayne Date: 08 Jan 04 - 12:17 PM I have a Yorkshire accent still even though I have live in London for a while now.....I don't think my accent is difficult to understand although some people would beg to differ!!! Sorcha says she sometimes has difficulty in understanding me when we are on the phone..... |
Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering From: manitas_at_work Date: 08 Jan 04 - 11:57 AM The Yorkshire accent isn't different from all else. An accent in Yorkshire is part of a continuum of accents within Yorkshire and within the English language. Much of the south-east of England has had the local accents flattened out by the presence of London and it's this variety of English you'll usually hear in the media and which is regarded as 'standard'. Yorkshire's just far enough away from London that the difference in accent is hard to understand if you are unused to it. The same goes for the West Country, Black Country, Lancashire etc. You just need to learn to appreciate the variety of English in the UK. |

Subject: RE: Feb Mudcat gathering From: Midchuck Date: 08 Jan 04 - 09:32 AM Snuffy, I'm glad someone said that. I was in England in '01 and when we got to Yorkshire, I thought I was still in England - but what they were speaking didn't appear to be English. At least, the English in the rest of England, and even in Scotland, for that matter, sounded different from 'Murican, but I could understand it... Peter. |

(My partner plays mandolin but does not sing) Also, how about a map, a postcode or an address for all of us from down in the Midlands? "Come fill up your glasses and let us be merry ...!" Alan PS: If we can make it, we will be bringing our own campervan. Would there be off-road space for it? |
