PEACH PICKIN’ TIME IN GEORGIA
Words and music by Jimmie Rodgers and Clayton McMichen.
As recorded by Jimmie Rodgers, 1928.

When it's peach-pickin' time in Georgia, apple-pickin' time in Tennessee,
Cotton-pickin' time in Mississippi, ev'rybody picks on me.
When it's round-up time in Texas, the cowboys make whoopee,
Then down in old Alabama, it's gal-pickin' time to me. [YODEL]

There's the bluegrass down in Kentucky. Virginia's where they do the swing.
Carolina, now I'm coming, to you to spend the spring.
Arkansas, I hear you calling. I know I'll see you soon.
There's where I'll do a little pickin', underneath the Ozark moon. [YODEL]

Now when hard times overtake you, I hope they don't get me,
For I've got a sweetie waiting, for me down in Tennessee.
I know I'm going to see her. I hope it won't be long.
There's where we'll pick a little cabin, and call it our mountain home. [YODEL]

When the pickaninnies pick the cotton, I'll pick a wedding ring.
We’ll go to town and pick a little gown for the wedding in the spring.
Hope the preacher knows his bus'ness. I know he can't fool me.
When it's peach-pickin' time in Georgia, it's gal-pickin time to me. [YODEL]

There is a verse omitted in Bert's lyric. After the "Ozark moon," and before the pickaninies line:

I've about done my daydreams. I hope they don't get me.
I've got a little girl a-waitin' down in Tennessee.
I know I'm goin' to see her. I hope it won't be long.
That's where I'll build a little cabin and call it my mountain home.

Thanks Bill,

I've noticed one or two other songs in these books are missing a verse or two here and there.

Did you transcribe your version from the disk?

I'll paste that one in my book.

God, I feel good when I keep finding recordings of songs being asked for :-)

I found an "original recording" of this ditty as recorded back in the 1940's by original Grand Ole Opry member Riley Puckett. It was re-issued in Britian in 1982 on the album I have "All Around Bluegrass--20 of the best" (various artistes).

I would be happy to make you a tape of the song. Please send $2 to cover cost of recording time, tape, and postage to: Bobby O'Brien, 49 McCleary Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010-2816. Phone 518 842 5857.
