Subject: Lyr Req: All the money...spent it in good company From: PoppaGator Date: 11 Jan 04 - 03:19 PM Yeah, I should probably be able to do this research myself. However, you 'catters do such a good job answering these requests, and seem to enjoy it so much, that I'd like to see what y'all come up with for me on this. First verse goes "Of all the money that ever I spenmt / I spent it in good company. / And all the harm [?] that ever I did / I [something somehting] only me." Heard it recently on DVD of a *wonderful* movies, set in Ireland and perhpas never released in the States, named "Evelyn." Gotta run, all of a sudden. I meant to synopsize and recopmmend the movie -- will have to add that part later... Pops |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: All the money...spent it in good company From: Tinker Date: 11 Jan 04 - 03:24 PM The Parting Glass There are several discussions in Threads as well. It's also on the Mudcat Orchid CD done by Big Mick. Wonderful song. Tinker |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: All the money...spent it in good company From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 11 Jan 04 - 04:07 PM A Scottish song that later got taken up in Ireland. And yes; as you mention, you could easily have found it through the search engine here, in less time than it takes to start a new (redundant) thread on the subject. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: All the money...spent it in good company From: PoppaGator Date: 12 Jan 04 - 03:31 PM Malcolm: Sorry! If I had known the *title,* I might have found the most recent earlier thread, which has been ressurrected. However, even in that case, if I had just looked it up myself (in the DT but not in the forum), I would have missed a *lot* of information volunteered by various members. Tinker: Thanks, that's all I needed. Somehow, I stumbled across the revived "Parting Glass" thread before I was able to find this one, and it offers a wealth of information. Eric: Since you refreshed this little thread earlier this morning, I should have found it more easily than I did. I'm puzzled over why I couldn't find it -- but the important thing is that I found the other more complete thread. All: My recommendation and brief "review" of the film "Evelyn," in which I heard this tune, appears in the "Parting Glass" thread. Joe et al: Want to kill or consolidate this redundant thread? I would not object... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: All the money...spent it in good company From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 12 Jan 04 - 04:07 PM Oh, these things happen: but we've got to the point now where the Forum contains more information than can ever be incorporated into the DT (including a lot of corrections to old errors), so it's always advisable to search that as well. You don't need to know the title of a song (and, like many, this one has several) so long as there's a characteristic phrase you can use instead: "spent it in good company" would do the trick, for example. I do get impatient sometimes when threads get started asking questions that have already been comprehensively dealt with (there were several yesterday, so you copped for it too) but I hope that you understand why. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: All the money...spent it in good company From: cobber Date: 12 Jan 04 - 10:05 PM There is a book called "The Gay Galliard" that I remember reading a long time ago. In it the song is the favourite of Mary Queen of Scots lover. I can't remember the author except that she was a Scottish historian working in the 1940s who novelised her research. What does stick in my memory is that she printed the words under the title Johnny Armstrong's Goodnight. As there is another song with this title, I wonder whether she was confused, which seems unlikely for a very competent historian or whether this was indeed once, the title of this song. Has anyone any ideas? |
