I'm trying hard to understand the concept of hairy nipples, hairy enough to require shaving, at any rate. I have seen, and heard of, small amounts of hair growing out of the skin immediately surrounding the nipple, but... What a hell of a place to have stubble. I admit I'm behind the times, but is this a new fad? Like tongue-splitting, or something? And why would this area outside the nipple need shaving when it is the nipple itself which is pierced?
I'm so confused. I feel a little as though the very foundations of my world have been rocked. I think I have to go lie down.

Regarding the shaved or hairy: If the armpits belong to a woman and they are connected to her very own body, I DON'T CARE.

GUEST, Shock Horror - whoever said she had to shave her nipple area to attach the shield is a twit. The thing was held on by the piercing. See here for a brief description. Look here for more information on what a nipple shield looks like.
Now, she may have had it shaved (if needed) when the piercing was done.

Shaving nipples? Imagine plucking them!!!

(I'm given to understand by a TS friend that there are some very fine depilatory creams available for the more "sensitive" areas)

Be very careful of tatooists and eyebrows. A woman I worked with had some tatooed on and now wears a permanent look of cartoon surprise. She looks like she sat on an umbrella which then opened.

Dianavan, I have never tattooed my face, BUT I understand that a lot of people have had good luck with the tattooed eyebrows. Some tattoo artists have training in cosmetic tattooing but I think a lot of that is done in dermatologists' offices and the like. Pencil isn't so bad, though - you can even buy eyebrow stencils!

Ah the menopause. Yes, your eyebrows have probably fallen out because of your wildly see-sawing hormones. (My eyelashes have always fallen out at that time of the month........go figure).

I think I would go for the "drawing them in" option as they may well grow back once your hormones settle down again. I have no idea how long that will take ( how long's a piece of string - type problem ) so I don't know how long you can put up with doing that.

Also, although I have several tattoos, I'd be really nervous about someone tattooing my face! Especially across a bony part (ouch!) and you could really damage the hair folicals. It's also an area of skin that will be changing quite a lot over the next decade. That would affect any tattoo you had. Your 'eyebrows' could end up a very different shape than what they started as!!!!

Oooh! I've just had an idea. Maybe you could get them henna'd on? That way you don't have to draw them on every day, but you're not left with the problems of permanence. Whaddya think?

TTFN Lady P.

Maybe we should change this to the question of plucking and/or hair loss. Is that allowed?

A few years ago when I was experiencing the dreaded menopause, I broke out in a "night sweat". As I was washing up the next morning, I noticed that half my eyebrows were missing. All that remained were these little tufts. My friend said it was because I had plucked them so much when I was younger. She said I had destroyed the folicle. But I never plucked that part! I'm convinced that my body temperature was so hot that they simply burned off.

Oh well, now I have to draw them on every morning. I'm considering having them tatooed. What would be better: tufts, pencil lines or tatoo?

Ruskin - the English scholar who Ruskin college Oxford is named after - was so shocked, after a lifetime looking at naked classical statues, to find,on his wedding night, that women had pubic hair he was unable to consumate his marriage. (And I believe that's the way it stayed.)

Well, Fred, I'll guess that it's become so common for women to shave their armpits, that some people are shocked and amazed when they see one who doesn't. It's a personal choice. What other women decide about their body hair is entirely up to them.

I don't spend alot of time feeling my underarms or my legs but I sure don't like the scratchy rub between shaves.

Maybe you mean your boyfriend likes the way your skin feels? If so, there's alot of other places he can touch if he doesn't like the hairy underarms.

Being a hairless wonder at age 14 I really didn't need to shave but my "home ec." teacher told us it was a sign of good grooming, so I did.

My mom had a bloody fit and screamed that now I would have to shave for the rest of my life because it would grow back all coarse and dark. Besides that, she said, "Don't you know that Hitler's girlfriend, Eva, started that fad? Hitler associated hair with the lower orders, so Eva started shaving. So now your lookin' for a boyfriend like Hitler?"

Needless to say, I gave it up. Useless exercise. Depends on what you like - soft or scratchy - take your pick. Has nothing to do with sophistication. Has more to do with social pressure and trying to look as white as possible.

I prefer shaved simply because it minimizes the sweat/BO that are pretty much inescapable for most of the year in South Texas. It's more work for me, but it's not as much work as pre-washing the underarms of my shirts so they don't stain. I shave the legs, too, but less often.

I'm not into body hair that much, anyway, on anybody. My last boyfriend had nice soft, blond, unobtrusive body hair.

I'm not sure what connection I was trying to make above. I think it's kind of like car alarms. If you have a car alarm, you might ask yourself: Why?

And what kind of person are you, that you host such a noisy ugly and utterly useless piece of crap?

Shaving pits is something one might like to do, or like the look of, without bothering anyone. But why do some people go off like car alarms if some women don't? What kind of people are they?

   Cultural car-alarmists.

Romans, Guest? I think that theory would need elaboration to fit in time and space. The postmaster had some influence on pubic hair for awhile--didn't like it, not one bit.
Saftey razors are pretty handy whether companies profit or not. But why do they keep making lousy cars? It's not a new thing they have to work the bugs out of, they've made good ones, why not build on that?
And why does my printer cartridge run out in bits and spurts? Why can't it print good pictures til it dies instead of thirty that run out partway across the page?

Mary Quant shaved her pubic hair into a heart shape in the late 60s.

I had a partner once who used to shave his pubic hair (number one) like a crew cut.

Guest, I like the look of unhairy men myself, but I'm not one of them, and too lazy (M.G.) to do anything about it.

Paris Is Burning was a good documentary that wasn't too hard to find, a few years ago.

Wait--is it sophisticated women, or sophisticated lookin' laydees?

I don't think there's quite a hair-correlative for men. Nose hair maybe, for some. Still, there's a social pressure on women about appearances that men can't really grasp the size of. No matter how cool or "sophisticated" anybody is, they might want to re-think the hair.
One can take the "natural" idea to an extreme and be a full-flegded nudist all the time, but that's kind of sad and dispirited, really--it's fun to open presents, and interesting to wear social masks. It really is unsophisticated to be all natural, or on the other hand all conventional about everything, but not to pick and choose whatever suits you. I sympathize with people who have strong preferences for particular looks, but not for rude half-baked arguments about it. It really becomes obvious quick when people will use anything in the icebox as a point instead of bothering to know and say what they really think.
This thread has become all valentine-y and evocative with women talking about pubic decorations and all. Thanks for that. The only part of the image that isn't etched in my brain is the title of the book you're reading in the tub. It's a little blurry, I can't make it out, what is it?

well, I have known women who have dyed it, but i got the   idea it was reserved for special occasions... All I can say is, don't   use a typical commercial hair dye with peroxide as this may be too toxic for that area. But if you use henna you should be okay, or even better, those vegetable-based dyes along the lines of "Manic Panic" which come in every color of the rainbow...

My sister-in-law is an electrologist who runs her business in her home; she has been very successful; there is no shortage of people who want their superfluous hair removed permanently...I'd think   about it if I did not have so much of it...but shaving my legs is not a big deal.

Kat, I did *not* mean all women who shave are unsophisticated! No, no, no. I was trying to make a point about Steve's stereotyping about Americans, more like it...;) To me, the fact that some European women shave, and some do not, is very interesting because it really does not seem to be a big deal either way.

Since Steve's comment was about American women, so was mine! In general, in my experience, the woman who don't shave are either feminists and hippies of a certain generation, or neo-hippies and   neo-pagans who are younger, and many lesbians of my acquaintance. But it's certainly not across the board for any of them...

I do think so-called "unsophisticated" American women are more likely to shave than not to (the point I was trying to make to Steve), perhaps because the men in these populations are less likely to tolerate hairiness, but that does not mean I think women who choose to shave are unsophsticiated as a rule. I was merely talking in numbers. (Making a generalization of my own, though perhaps a somewhat more informed one than he was, who knows?) And I shave my legs! And consider myself relatively sophisticated...some of the time anyway! I am half-Sicilian after all...if I were a less hairy blonde, I might opt not to shave my legs, too..

I should have added, that many women who shave choose what I actually consider very sophisticated METHODS for doing it...waxing, electrolysis, etc. and I am personally fascinated by the practice of dying the body hair or shaving it into shapes...I saw a lot of unusual examples when I was a dancer!

Cat has a point.

As I've already said, my body hair is very fair and you don't know it's there till you go looking for it.

So, altough I have never shaved my armpits or legs, no one's ever commented on this because they don't know I haven't. No one's squealed when they've seen my unshaven legs in summer, no one's stared in shock when I've been bouncing up and down at a gig waving my arms in the air.

Consequently, it's very easy for me to not be bothered about whether people shave their body hair or not. Other women ( and men ) have not had so easy.

This is a golden opportunity to point out to all you naked homo sapiens out there that Chimpanzees (nature's finest creation) have naturally hairless armpits! Yeah. And we're hairy in most other places. It's a devastatingly attractive combination.

The main thing that worries me about human females is their relative hairlessness and their towering height! It's kind of scary till you get used to it. I gotta admit they have amazingly long legs and great hair on their heads though. Pretty slick.

This armpit shaving thing? I wouldn't worry about it. Look, if God gives ya hair in your armpits, go with it I say. If not, go with that. We need more self-acceptance out there. I'll tell ya what's really attractive...a chimpette or a human dame who likes herself just exactly the way God made her and ain't afraid to show it in a classy way. You can take that to the bank, baby.

shaving is a cousin to excessive de-odorizing and compulsive bathing, in that it is pushed by companies that want to sell razors, scents & soap. With reasonable hygene, most people look and smell fine...and as noted ^ above, body hair does serve to concentrate pheromones and tell us something about potential mates. Too bad so many people (especially in the US) are fighting 5 million years of evolution.

Sounds like a pretty solid theory Homeless, the saftey razor was a really big business event. Among inventors, things like razors and toothbrushes are big deals, since they're pretty expensive and disposable.

I read a history of the advertising of the lady clairol hair coloring stuff, then later, preference. At first they had to make it an okay thing to do with images of mothers and daughters. Stupid things are pretty interesting. I had a friend whose great virtue was that the dumbest thing you could ever mention, he'd take it up and run with it, like michael Jordan. (Sports are stupid, but people think nothing of talking endlessly about them.) The reason people take two alka-selzters is that when they were making a commercial with a hand dropping a tablet into a glass, an ad guy said show it dropping two, you'll double your sales. And they did. (Hey! Why not 12?)

It's not much of a good or bad thing to do. It's fun to have a little bit of halloween in our daily lives, but then some people always get adamant about How People Should Be.

Peg I'm curious if you saw that tape of antique porn from the museum show that's going around? Or other stuff? I haven't come across it yet.

in India, pubic and underarm hair is combed and oiled daily with coconut oil. As well as keeping it glossy, it keeps it free of lice. (they can't breathe in the coconut oil). the skin absorbs vital nutrients from the coconut oil (including something that assists the metabolism).

some older indian ladies practise the art of fortunetelling by reading armpit hair. when the armpit is combed, and the dross of oil. coconut and is removed, the old ma will sit and look at the remains. Using her highly developed knowledge of the patterns of armpit hair growth and developmnent and direction of whirls and tufts of hair, she will be able to predict the person's personality, business prospects and how many children they have.

when we shave our armpits, we are removing, in our ignorance, a great body of wisdom about our selves..

Subject: RE: BS: Hairy or shaved armpits

I was talking with my girlfriend tonight about shaving armpits and she told me that it was started by one of the razor companies back in the 1920s. They wanted to sell more razor blade and so started a big media blitz to convince women that leg and armpit hair was ugly (and it seems they succeeded).

When we got home, I looked on the net and came up with references, but no real factual stories. I did find a lot of references to early Gilette razors for women, so I would guess it was they who started the propaganda campaign.

The closest I could find was this paragraph
"The theory is that American women started shaving in the first decades of the 20th century when dress cuts started showing more leg, and sleeveless dresses showing underarms. American women became the target of a new marketing claim that they needed to be "clean" shaven. In May of 1915, "Harper's Bazaar" magazine featured a dress advertisement photo of a young woman with her arm raised and a perfectly smooth armpit with the caption, "Summer Dress and Modern Dancing combine to make necessary the removal of objectionable hair." Shortly thereafter, the shocking term "underarm" was being used and a new market for razor blades was born."
from this site Art and Culture about nakedness

Pubic Hair Removal which briefly dicusses removal of any/all hair as far back as 4000 BC

Body Hair where a young woman question why she shaves various places (scroll down past the first two paragraphs).

All the Pits which has links to a number of articles and anecdotes regarding women shaving.

I probably could have found something more concrete, but honestly I was tired of weeding thru all the sites that came up when I put "women shave armpits" in Google (is there anything you can search on that doesn't come up with tons of hits for porn sites?).

PS- and of course, as I change windows to post this, something on the search engine catches my eye, and I see, "According to Herbie McNinch, inventor and president of Quick Shave, Inc., the ritual of women shaving their legs and armpits began in 1915 because of a razor company's marketing campaign. The campaign was designed to convince women that hairy underarms are unfeminine and unhygienic. Razor blade sales doubled within two years. Advertising worked, and the tradition was begun." taken from this site, Let It Grow .

I shave my legs, not my underarms...
if you bathe each day and use a good natural deodorant, the odor is not a problem...hot days are a different story, but that's true for people that use anti-perspirants too. the human body needs to sweat; plugging up the pores with alumnium is not a good idea. Besides, it's not sweat that stinks; it's bacteria. a deodorant with tea tree, lavender or bergamot works great. (I use Jason's tea tree, or aromarant from Lush)

A remark on another thread, prompts me to point out that Linda (Essex Girl) is not naturally very hirsute anyway. Her belief is that shaving only makes the hair coarser and that therefore it's self-defeating.

A quick summary - coalitus, female body hair is considered erotic, plat your pit, must be bloody uncomfortable, haven't shaved my pits for years, shaved the bits the sun don't see, half an orange as a contraceptive device, pumice stone from volcanic lava rather than shaving daily, stop the turkey shit sticking, incision was torture but the stubble nearly reduced me to tears, Hobbit toes, specialised website for non-pit shavers, hairy palms, Armpit hair like genital hair, Pheramones, Pink Floyd's The Wall etc etc - keep it coming folks facinating stuff...i've even decided to give it a try.

Ms Lemon, the answer to your question, "so why do men prefer shaved pits?" is "social conditioning" or possibly "peer pressure." There is no rational reason. Many men who are able to think for themselves don't have a preference one way or another.
Read Sweetfia's post above for an example of social conditioning. What reason is there to be embarrassed that your pits aren't shaved?

My brother once shaved his eyebrows off after watching Pink Floyd's The Wall, just to see what it would look like.

He can't have looked that different 'cos it took my Mum a week and a severe telling off, for her to notice what he'd done. It was quite amusing to watch. My mother grabed the front of my brother's shirt to drag him down to her level (to emphasise a point, as it were) and just stopped in her tracks. Then she exploded with "Why ent you got no eyebrows?" at the top of her lungs. She proceeded to berate him for his lack of cranial caterpillars and then she demanded that I tell him why he shouldn't shave them off! It all lost steam when my brother started laughing and my Mum kept losing track of where she was in her diatribe.

Thanks to my inheriting my hair colouration from my Dad, I don't have to shave anyway. The few hairs I have are really pale and they just don't show up against my skin. My Mother was a bit put out about that too, come to think of it, as she has black body hair.

I did shave my legs once, just to see what it was like. I decide that the itching alone was enough to drive me insane, so I didn't do that ever again and thanked the powers that be for my good fortune....

TTFN Lady P.

I didn't shave for years. I did notice my customers looking when I was making the lemonade, but it never affected sales! I do shave now because I have noticed that the hair hangs on to odours. I suppose that's why they are there... to attract the opposite sex. Pheramones etc, so why do men prefer shaved pits? Don't you like us to smell all natural like? In some areas I know you do!

Armpit hair like genital hair, arrives at puberty and is therefore pubic hair and a sign of sexual maturity. While I can understand a woman feeling that excessively hirsute arms or legs might look unfeminine, I would generally prefer a lady not to shave or depilate her armpits - Linda never does. The same goes for "the bits the sun don't see" although as Linda and I do enjoy naturism now and again, perhaps Liz's description isn't so accurate. As mentioned on another thread, I find mature ladies (esp Essex Girl) very sexy, and don't want them to look like pre-pubescent girls.

I've definitely never felt any desire to remove any of my (admittedly sparse) body hair, and the only time that I have shaved my beard off in the last 30-odd years was for a stage role.

Liz - you just reminded me of a very funny scene. Post surgery, I was encouraged to walk as much and as soon as possible. The incision was torture but the stubble nearly reduced me to tears. So I am hobbling bow legged down the corridor dragging an IV when a nurse runs over to me and says "You shouldn't be in this much pain! What's wrong?" I responded icily "Five O'clock shadow."

greg--not taboo, just inane. I would sarcastically suggest any number of other thread topics except that some visiting einstein might decide to make his Mudcat debut with a thread on why toilet paper sometimes sticks to his butt. (Hmmm. Maybe that one has already been done. Should I do a search on 'spaw's threads? Or LH's Blind Drunk in Blind River?) Kevin was right, the remark probably would have been made even if a mudcatter started the thread. But the anonymous guests are easy targets when silly stuff turns up.

She asks me why, I'm just a hairy guy.
I'm hairy noon and night, hair that's a fright.
I'm hairy high and low, don't ask me why, don't know.
It's not for lack of bread, like the Grateful Dead.
Darlin'

Give me a head with hair, long beautiful hair.
Shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen.
Give me down to there hair, shoulder length or longer
Here baby, there, momma, ev'rywhere, daddy, daddy.

hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair.Flow it, show it,long as God can grow it, my hair.

Let it fly in the breeze and get caught in the trees, give a home to the fleas in my hair.
A home for fleas (yeah) a hive for bees (yeah),
a nest for birds, there ain't no words for the beauty, the splendor, the wonder of my:

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it,long as God can grow it, my hair

I want long, straight, curly, fuzzy, snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty,
oily, greasy, fleecy, shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen,
knotted, polka dotted, twisted, beaded, braided,
powered, flowered and confettied, bangled, tangled, spangled and spaghettied.

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair.Flow it, show it,
long as God can grow it, my hair

They'll be ga-ga at the go-go when they see me in my toga,
my toga made of blond, brilliantined, biblical hair.
My hair like Jesus wore it, Hallelujah I adore it, Hallelujah Mary loved her son,why don't my mother love me?

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
long as God can grow it, my hair

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
long as God can grow it, my hair

HAIR

But not a mention of armpits, is there?
