I was talking to Hazel (Pistacio) yesterday, and she was telling what a great time you all had.
Sorry to DaveTnova & Nancy for not letting you know that we could not make it, but if its any consilation, we look foreward to seeing you at the Beverley folk festival.
And your room is ready BTW!!
John&Christine.

If I've done my sums right the ammount raised was £70 which I will send to Gareth or give to Bill whichever is easiest.

Echoing what's already been said... Many, many thanks to the Ducks for organising this do! And thanks to Maddie for all her fine work on the raffles -- how much did we raise for Mudcat, Mrs D? (BTW, great pix!)

Once again, I really enjoyed getting to see so many of the faces that belong to the (by now) familiar names. Special thanks to Bill Sables (and Lorna!) for putting me up/putting up with me for a couple of nights -- especially at such a very busy time for them.

Thanks to Willa for indulging me by learning "Hola Hee Hola Ho" (and so quickly, too!) so we could sing it together -- you did a great job! Really enjoyed the singing of *so* many folks, can't even list them all, cos I'm afraid I'll leave someone out, but there were some great singers there! Linda & Pistachio -- your singing blew me away! As it was for Micca, a particular high point for me was hearing Sue Van G sing Linda's song "The Luckiest Sailor"... a flawless rendition of a powerfully moving song. Also, Geoff the Duck's magnificent *solo* rendition of "Duelling Banjos" was a performance which will linger *long* in my memory!

Hope to see some of you again before too long...

Cheers,

YY
(who *tried* to post this Tues eve... and again Wed a.m.... then had to head out of town)

You need to follow the link that says back to Mrs canards photos which gives access to the other albums. Alternatively the second link in my last post takes you direct to them - around 100 of them!!

A huge thank you to the Ducks and ducklings for organising the weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed my 2nd Yorkshire Gathering and the weather helped by permitting much outdoor singing. Yorkshire Yankee, thanks for all your songs, Sue and Bob, thanks for all the songs (and cheese) and Linda, Les and Maggie, thanks for getting me involved in the first place.Lovely to re-meet some familiar faces,   (Nutty, Colin, Frank) and make some new friends. Micca, I'll wait to hear your own version of Thiepval sometime soon. I hope to catch up with more of you at the Beverley Folk Festival 18 - 20 June. Cheers, Hazel.

Maisie Nan, thy wish is granted (but don't blame me for the previous, all us blokes were too busy going "corrrrr" to actually find out your name & naturally the competition wasn't going to enlighten us... ;) ).

Mind you, I'm now worried - either there is a big hole in my memory (& I distinctly remember your hands wandering, I'm sure!) or davetn is using poetic licence as a weapon...

;)

Sorry Wulfie, wish it had been me but the poem was from Dave, you obviously made a big impression there. I wrote one called Crush of the Day on the way home - before flat tyre - but I'll save it til I see him again ... mmm... lovely... haven't had so much fun since Mayday. Please stop calling me Mrs Dave - call me Maisie Nan like my dad used to. Looks like my technophobia might be almost cured. Big hugs all round - Nancy

Lovely to meet new faces and other parts and really great to meet Sorcha at last. No voice left to teach tomorrow but who cares, it was fun! Just to let you know, she (and her freshly baked cookies) are on their way. She is also bringing my laptop, in response to whoever it was that was bemoaning the lack of geek toys.

If she isn't there by 9pm, she might be lost - call her on 0781 280 1175 and you might be able to talk her through final approach.

Well only 24 hours to go (or less). Final round up of knickers and instruments, throat lozenges etc. Rough outline of the weekend will be as follows

Friday night
Arrive and pitch tents, park vans etc. Catch up with old friends and new over a few pints accompanied by singing and music.

Saturday
Morning Breakfasts available in the pub from 9ish   until about 10ish (Forgot to ask price but seem to recall it was a bloody good feed last year and around £4 including toast tea and coffee)
Sit and soak up the sunshine or play a few tunes, sing a few songs to gently wake up the world. Adventurous could take a walk around the area (there is some sort of nature reseve fairly close) or even drive into Selby and look at the minster or shops.
Afternoon At some point there will be an old time american session tunes and songs in the gazebo (no not the one over the toilet!) and no doubt others will continue the singing and playing either in the bar or if weather is fine (and it WILL be) outside on the campsite.
Later in the afternoon Liz will treat us to her version of Have we got bollocks for you!' or something like that
BBQ will be at around 6 and the Black Dog staff will be cooking burgers, sausages, chicken etc. to buy.
Evening Singaround in the darts bar - lots of good chorus numbers hopefully.
Music session in the other bar
As the night wears on we will gather together in the darts bar and have a mixed session with a few tunes followed by a few songs etc.
It will be possible to use the gazebo for music up until closing time but after that we are better inside so as not to upset neighbours.

Sunday
Morning
Breakfasts will again be available from 9 - 10 after which they need to set up for Sunday lunches so don't be late!
Big sing in the bar - roll out some of those rousing anthems
Afternoon
Survivors sessions until everyone departs.
Those having Sunday lunch are requested to hang on until around 2.30 to give kitchen staff time to cope.

The pub also does an excellent range of food throughout the day.

The Yorkshire gathering has always been something of an informal affair and the above is only a rough timetable although you will get fed!!! The main point of the weekend is to enjoy so look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow - we can't get there until around 5ish so if you get there sooner just make yourselves known to Gary and Tracy (Black Dog landlord and landlady) and they will do their best to help you.

Can't wait.
Jane

I will arrive some time Friday pm after a quick visit to Mother on the way up. I am a tight fisted git so will be cooking my own meals,
in my little tent. And please DONT hug me too tight as I am still VERY tender fron the aftermath of the dreaded Shingles!!

We could just take over the pub and claim sessation from the state of Yorkshire? Call it Mudcatonia (Twinned with Black Doggerel) and request NATO protection against the invasion of PEL inspectors.

Muppett - the pub is about 3 or 4 miles south of Selby, on the road to Snaith. It is about the first thing you reach as you approach Camblesforth from that direction. I don't have a clue if there is any public transport going that direction, but if you are arriving at a sensible, known time, it might be possible for somebody to collect you from a railway station.
It also seems to possible to get a train to Snaith, but they are few and far between.
The address and phone number for the pub is as follows. If in difficulty you will be able to get in touch with someone during the gathering.

The situation is that if insufficient people require breakfasts they won't happen but I think numbers are looking good. The jury is still out on the barbeque but should go ahead. As said before it will be the pubs burgers sausages chicken etc that go on and we buy them rather than doing it ourselves. Fiddler - obviously not sausage and bacon for breakfast but do you still like a cooked one if veggie sausages are available? Is Stepper coming or is she staying with Lilwobble?

WILL BE SORTING OUT FINAL DETAILS WITH TRACY AND gARY TONIGHT. I CERTAINLY HOPE THERE WILL BE THE WONDERFUL BREAKFASTS AS LAST YEAR. Sorry didn't mean to shout. I will confirm about the barby but even if we decide against it there is plenty of great food available both healthy and otherwise :0) There are in fact two quizes planned one being an unknown quantity from Liz which I expect will take place early Saturday evening and the other a pen and paper one about the pub which will be on all weekend and winners announced on Sunday. As last year we would request that anyone wanting Sunday lunch has it after the main crowds at around 2.30. A quick show of hands might be useful at this point from folk who would be interested in breakfast or Sunday lunch.
Don't forget to look out that interesting little item for the raffle (all proceeds to Mudcat)
We aim to fit as much fun as possible into the weekend so look forward to seeing you all VERY soon.

Actually I would almost never use the phrase 'on the' but then I'm not a native Yorkshirewoman. I would rely on context to indicate which Friday I was referring to ie since we're talking Yorkshire gathering it must therefore be Friday 21st. Of course we have been there since last Friday 30th April. So we arrived sometime on A Friday!!!! As for the 'next' question even Geoff and I have differences of opinion on this one - frequently! Anyway enough of bandying semantics - just get there sometime on a Friday of your choosing and let's have a great weekend.

Right, Mario. We in the USA use the almost equally confusing "next," as in "next Friday". Unfortunately, this means different things to different people, especially in certain regions of the country. If today were Wednesday and you were to say "next Friday" in some places, they would believe you to be referring to the most immediate one. Elsewhere, they would take it to mean the one at the end of the following week. In still other areas it could even refer to the third Friday. Someone once told me, "If I had meant the Friday next week, I would have said, 'this coming Friday. Next means the one after.'" You'll see almost the same confusion when folks say, "this Friday".

The explanation of "the Friday" given by Snuffy is the way this was explained to me when I was in England and seems to be almost universally understood there in that way.

Thanks Snuffy. I don't think many (if any) would make that distinction here in the US.

'sometime friday afternoon' and 'sometime on friday afternoon' would be used interchangeble (that you were referring to the friday of the gathering would automatically be implied and inferred)

'sometime on the friday afternoon' probably wouldn't occur - it's not a construction one sees or hears often over here.

"sometime friday afternoon" means this Friday (7th)

Good intentions get washed down the drain with the rain and the snow.
There's been a load of drinkin' drivin'
on the road to my horizon
I had a crash, and someone's been following me.

Like a wine stoned cowboy
Cruizin' down in my car when I can hardly see the the road.
A rum drunk cowboy
Getting followed around by people I don't even know
And officers 'round at my home

Well the pol-ice they interviewed me
I said I've had less than three
little ole tumblers of rum. I though they'd believe me.
But my breath test was Zero point two
With Arazona's laws, point zero eight is the most you can do.
Now I'm accused of drinkin' drivin'
and there's trouble on my horizon
I kneed a policeman and that's a felony.

Like a wine stoned cowboy
Cruizin' down in my car when I could hardly see the the road
An old drunk cowboy
Getting rough and abusive to people I don't even know
And officers inside my home.

Like a wine stoned cowboy
Cruizin' round in my car when I can hardly see the the road

FADE

A wine stoned cowboy
Getting rough and abusive to people I don't even know

Ringtone cowboy

I like keepin' my cell phone on
Playin' my favourite song
I hope it goes off while I'm headed home on the subway.
Attention's the name of the game,
and some guys give a display like it's their claim to fame.
I always find that I'm upsizing
with my phone accessorizing
So you'll be impressed every time that someone calls me

I'm a ringtone cowboy
Leave it there on my desk, give my workplace a music show.
I'm a ringtone cowboy
I divert extensions of people I don't even know
To hear some music over my phone.

Well, it's not long till I reset
and I change the song over the net
I'm cool because I'm thirty plus, but my phone's playing Green Day.
And I dream of the things I'll do
Like the Star Wars theme and Britney Spears and Eminem too.
I guess my friends think I'm surprising
with a reportoire comprising
of bands that I've seen when I'm bored and watch MTV.

I'm a ringtone cowboy
Leave it there on my desk, give my workplace a music show.
I'm a ringtone cowboy
I divert extensions of people I don't even know
To hear some music over my phone

I'm a ringtone cowboy
Like my phone's a license for putting on a music show
I'm a ringtone cowboy
I'm inflicting my taste on the people I don't even know
I'm clever 'cause I own a phone.

Found these two as I was searching along with some political ones aimed mainly at Bush

The reason is quite simple the Selby bit was full of Industry Power Stations and Pits. These supplied money to the rest of North Yorkshire which by and large is rural whilst Selby area lost out. When Industry and the Pits shut down North Yorkshire no longer wanted the area. The boundry commision is now try to find a home for the area.

That's what I suspected YY - can you talk to Manitas about it, I'm sure he has the same.

Happy to, Liz... can't tell you *what* a difference my "gadget" makes; I *strongly* encourage anyone who might have sleep apnoea to get it checked out ASAP. Unfortunately, I do look like a cross between a fighter pilot & an elephant when I'm wearing it (it's SO romantic... NOT!) -- but it's definitely worth it.

One thing *you* can do though -- next time his snoring is keeping you awake anyway ;-) -- listen closely; does he stop breathing for a few moments & then start again? (My husband says he used to lie next to me in bed thinking "Breathe, damnit!") If so, the sooner he sees someone about it, the better (there can be a *long* wait for treatment). Not to mention that if he does any driving, there are *extremely* high risks involved in driving while seriously sleep-deprived.

Here's a link to a Radio 4 programme on sleep disorders that helped me (well, my husband, actually) finally figure out why my memory was so bad & I was tired *all* the time. (To hear the programme, click on the Listen Again link -- 2nd column from the left.)

Sorry for the thread-creep, but I thought other people *might* find it useful as well...

Cheers,

YY

That's what I suspected YY - can you talk to Manitas about it, I'm sure he has the same. I bet if you compare symptoms you'll have a lot in common! Of course, if I stop holding the pillow over him when he snores too much, that would help (him if not me!)

El Ted's grey matter could be replaced by a bag of lightly salted porrige - I suspect it would work as well if not better!

Harpmaker - Tartan knickers...... are they cotton, printed or the real thing in wool? If they are the latter, I might be interested.

Well YY they are electric hook up points designed for caravans etc. They do not accept 3 pin plugs direct but as stated we are possibly going to put our van on hook up as it will be there for a few weeks so it would be possible to run an extension lead from our 3 pin socket in the van to your machine out of the window. Hope that makes sense!

YorkshireYankee - we have a contraption that converts from a car battery to an ordinary 3 pin outlet - you'd have to PM Manitas to find out voltage, duration and recharging abilities... if it helps, it's yours for the weekend.

Failing that, we could take it in turns to drive you round the car park all night with the car lighter adapter on!!!

Do hope to see you there... I'm curious about this machine of yours now!

Thanks LTS, that's very kind... here's the scoop: I have sleep apnoea, so at night I have to use this little machine that helps keep my windpipe open while I sleep -- otherwise I wake up every minute or two (because my throat has closed & I've stopped breathing). It is also a mercy on anyone who happens to be within earshot, as without it my snoring could wake the dead, let alone the sleeping!

I've considered hooking up the contraption up to my car battery, but it uses *so* much power that by morning (if not before) the car battery would be totally drained.

Mrs Duck, when you say "there are one or two electric points available", does that mean I might be able to run a cord from my contraption to the electric point? If so, camping could be a viable option for me after all...

Cheers (sorry to be a pain),

YY

Hello Mr & Mrs D,

Good to meet you at the Barnsley Folk Festival this weekend. BTW, very much enjoyed your answer to the fellow who asked "WHAT have you done with your children?" (For those not lucky enough to have been there, both Ducks replied -- without missing a beat -- "Boiled 'em!"). I trust your littl'uns have managed (despite boiling) to completely devour their Easter choccies already... or do they still have some left?

Thanks for letting me know about this -- I'm definitely going to try to get there, but the fact that it's all camping may make it a little difficult for me. For health reasons, I need access to an electrical outlet when I sleep, so a tent is not practical in my case -- unless this field has electrical hookups available (I get the impression it doesn't).

Is there anything along the lines of a B&B fairly near-by?

Also -- I'll be coming from Sheffield, so if there's anyone else planning to come from thereabouts, I'm happy to have a passenger or two (or to be a passenger & help with petrol costs).

Cheers,

YY

Just to keep everything in mind. Liz I have already given thought to something for the landpersons but if anyone has good ideas PM me as they might read this and spoil the suprise.
As always the weekend will largely run itself but some folk have made suggestions that didn't end in off which could be included as part of the festivities.
1. Liz has expressed interest in arranging a panel type game in the vein of "Whose brain is minding the buzzcocks anyway?"
2. The Webfooted Ramblers invite you to an hour or two of old time/american music song etc. at a time to be thought up on the day.
3. There will be an ongoing quiz sheet available (want to help me with this one next week Selby?)
4. Sunday am raise the rafters with a few full throttled songs not necessarily religious but they do have some belters - bring words if possible but nothing too taxing and don't worry if we get it wrong we'll have been up late.
Any other ideas please let me know and if you have questions I might even be able to answer some of them.
Ta

No such thing as a normal tent. As soon as you purchase a tent, it becomes abnormal. In the car on the way home, it absorbs your personality through the back of the seats and then transmogrifies into something completely opposite to you. If you are a tidy person you will get a tent that will always look like a badly made bed. If you are a tall person, it will mysteriously shrink by just enough to make you have to bend your head sideways. And even if this doesn't happen, it will mysteriously expand so that it will never, ever go back into its original bag again.

That about describes the general idea. It also includes - if you want a chat and drink without interrupting other peoples enjoyment... a generally informal attitude, some singing, some music, enough space to spread and for both to happen in different parts of the pub. Perhaps a bit of silliness to occupy the quieter parts of the day.
Bring a tent, camper or caravan, but tell us if you are doing so. It allows the landlady and landlord to cater for enough beer, food etc.
Quack!
GtD.

Well if you would just loosen your clothes a bit, Sorcha, and we will see what my thumbs can do to ease the pain in your neck and shoulders ...
Sorry, but unfortunately I cannot help with a space in my campervan. Have you ever seen the size of a Bambi? There is barely room for Sandy and me and only then if we use all the living space for the bed! However, like Micca, I do have a tent and sleeping bag available ...
Kendall has asked if the pub has rooms. I am not sure, but Jane should know. Or you could try telephoning them to see if they have a room. I have searched but the pub doesn't seem to have its own website.

Kendall - I cannot recall whether there are any "Rooms" nearby. There may be something in last year's thread - Here or here. The accommodation for the gathering is a field behind the pub where there are some resident caravans all year round, and space for us to bring caravans, campers and tents.
In previous gatherings Bill Sables has offered accommodation to visitors from further afield, and transported them to the venue. As Bill is on his World Tour at present he is not about to ask, and I would not presume to invite you to somebody else's house, but keep in touch, and we will make sure we get you organised with something.
Quack!

I'd better declare my bad news now. For about a year, I've been trying to get on a study tour that is going to Brazil to focus on the mighty soybean. And yes, that is the week it happens, 23rd to 31st. These study tours are excellent fun; previous ones have been to Chicago, Indiana (including the lamentable pole-dancing incident) and Nyawleens, and to Brussels, Hamburg and Poland last year.

As delicious as that trip sounds, I am going with a heavy heart, as last year's session in the muso's bar was one of the very best I have ever experienced, and I believe I am down to play second box in the MudScratch Ceilidh Band.

Oh bugger.

What do we think of the idea of a barbeque on the Saturday evening - might suit more tastes than the curry scrummy though it was. Mgas, camping is in the field at the back of the pub. If I remember from last year it is useful to let Mrs D know what kind of "outfit" you are bringing as there are only a few "Winnibago" size plots available. :-) You would need to be self contained apart from toilets which are available in the pub. Also most meals, including breakfast, were available last year from the pub if you dont fancy "self catering".

and the date this year is the 21st May ie the weekend before the Spring bank holiday. This gives everyone a full 3 weeks to recover from the Eurogathering and get ready to start the fun again!
