I remember:

Don't cross the street in the middle, in the middle, in the middle, in the middle, in the middle of the block
Teach your eyes to look up
Teach your ears to hear
Walk up to the corner where the coast is clear
and wait, and wait, until you see the light turn green

How about, from Romper room (to give you straight posture)

See me walk to straight and tall
I won't let my basket fall
Eyes ahead
Don't look down
Keep that basket off the ground

I knew them in the 70's in Ilkley. Martin had a beautiful Levin Guitar and a very distinctive voice. Grahams fretless bass guitar was made by his brother Steve who was a very good guitarist. As well as folk I remember them performing 'Take it Easy' with great fretless bass. Then they vanished - Martin where are you?

I saw Martin and Graeme play the old Priest House folk club at Castle Donnington in the 70's. They went down very well.

The club went a bit showbiz - a pity it was a nice place.

Thanks, Guest Baillie, I've been racking my brains trying to remember Graeme (Graham?) Jones' name. I seem to remember he used to play a fretless bass guitar - good stuff. A bunch of us did a Folk Tour one summer (early 70s) in the Yorkshire Dales, with concerts in half a dozen pubs and halls, based in a cottage in Middleham.

I have a sampler tapre on the Tradition label, which says he made 2 LPs for the label. I cant find copies for sale of either these days though.
I would happily pay you for a CDR of the album Stewie or swap for anything I might have, that you need.
Someone told me that Matin had died in a car crash during the mid 1970s. Think this may be a mistake though. Possibly he mixed Martin Carter up with Jon Rennard who also recorded for Tradition.

I have one of those Tradition LPs from 1972: Martin Carter 'Ups and Downs' Tradition TSR 012. Most of the songs came from Purslow's 'Marrowbones' and 'Wanton Seed' [from Hammond and Gardiner MSS] and Sedley's 'Seeds of Love' plus a couple of original compositions.

No - it's NOT Martin Carthy, and I don't suppose he has an MBE.

not!

I also remember a Martin Carter and I'm sure I had his contact address when we were booking acts for the Euston back in the late 60's/early 70's - Otley rings a bell.... I'll try and dig out me old books and see if we're on the same track....

Back in the seventies I think he used to live in Otley or thereabouts, but I've not heard of him since then.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of a UK singer of the 1970s called Martin Carter. I believe he made a couple of albums for the Tradition label
