Subject: RE: Martin Carter From: GUEST,suebish Date: 11 Feb 09 - 05:46 PM I remember: Don't cross the street in the middle, in the middle, in the middle, in the middle, in the middle of the block Teach your eyes to look up Teach your ears to hear Walk up to the corner where the coast is clear and wait, and wait, until you see the light turn green How about, from Romper room (to give you straight posture) See me walk to straight and tall I won't let my basket fall Eyes ahead Don't look down Keep that basket off the ground |
Subject: RE: Martin Carter From: GUEST,Nick Date: 09 Feb 09 - 07:50 AM Also often seen in the 70s in the Rose and Crown Pub in Ilkley..... |
Subject: RE: Martin Carter From: GUEST,Nick Date: 09 Feb 09 - 07:48 AM I knew them in the 70's in Ilkley. Martin had a beautiful Levin Guitar and a very distinctive voice. Grahams fretless bass guitar was made by his brother Steve who was a very good guitarist. As well as folk I remember them performing 'Take it Easy' with great fretless bass. Then they vanished - Martin where are you? |
Subject: RE: Martin Carter From: Big Al Whittle Date: 28 Nov 04 - 05:23 AM I saw Martin and Graeme play the old Priest House folk club at Castle Donnington in the 70's. They went down very well. The club went a bit showbiz - a pity it was a nice place. |
Subject: RE: Martin Carter From: GUEST,Phil Beck. Date: 28 Nov 04 - 02:20 AM Did Stewie ever come across with the CD copy of Ups and Downs? cos if not I've made a CD from the plastic myself |
Subject: RE: Martin Carter From: BanjoRay Date: 22 Jan 04 - 07:12 PM Thanks, Guest Baillie, I've been racking my brains trying to remember Graeme (Graham?) Jones' name. I seem to remember he used to play a fretless bass guitar - good stuff. A bunch of us did a Folk Tour one summer (early 70s) in the Yorkshire Dales, with concerts in half a dozen pubs and halls, based in a cottage in Middleham. Ray |
Subject: RE: Martin Carter From: GUEST,Guest Baillie Date: 22 Jan 04 - 12:43 PM I remember him, he used to play with a bass player called graeme jones for a while round about '76 I think, he did an excellent song called 'Mary the Mandolin maker' |
Subject: RE: Martin Carter From: Lancashire Lad Date: 21 Jan 04 - 09:28 PM I have a sampler tapre on the Tradition label, which says he made 2 LPs for the label. I cant find copies for sale of either these days though. I would happily pay you for a CDR of the album Stewie or swap for anything I might have, that you need. Someone told me that Matin had died in a car crash during the mid 1970s. Think this may be a mistake though. Possibly he mixed Martin Carter up with Jon Rennard who also recorded for Tradition. |
Subject: RE: Martin Carter From: Stewie Date: 21 Jan 04 - 06:10 PM I have one of those Tradition LPs from 1972: Martin Carter 'Ups and Downs' Tradition TSR 012. Most of the songs came from Purslow's 'Marrowbones' and 'Wanton Seed' [from Hammond and Gardiner MSS] and Sedley's 'Seeds of Love' plus a couple of original compositions. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Martin Carter From: GUEST Date: 21 Jan 04 - 01:18 PM Martin Carter produced a book of folk songs didn't he? |
