Subject: Sorcha and Kendall to UK! For Real!
From: Sorcha
Date: 18 Jan 04 - 09:33 PM

Don't really know where to put this, so it's up top for now. Move it if you think it's necessary.

Kendall and I are going to UK in April. He doesn't have ticket/reservation yet but hope to go in late April and perhaps stay thru May. My tickets are for April 16 (land in Heathrow Sat. April 17) and return home on May 25. I WILL be at the Yorkshire gathering.

Please, please PM me (or Kendall) if you wil be available during that time for a visit. I don't have my itinerary in stone yet. We are thinking about doing a hire car. Kendall will drive, I won't drive on the 'wrong' side of the road.

Tentative:
April 17--Land in London 12:45 PM. Micca/catsPHiddle pick me up. Go to Micca's house and meet with Leadfingers(maybe).

April 18--rest

April 19, Monday--Leadfingers collects me from Micca's and we head to Cornwall/Tintagel, stopping at Glastonbury Tor and Stonehenge on the way.
Don't know how long this will take. Return to London, travel about UK meeting Catters. Go with catsPHiddle to Ireland for a few days. Return to Manchester, travel some more. Arrive in Yorkshire for the Gather. Return to London with Micca/cats. Depart London May 25.

I will be looking at the map and talking to Micca about the route, and then PMing some of you. Open to suggestions.

All Kendall knows is that he IS going over in April and probably hiring a car. He doesn't have dates yet.

Have tickets, have passport, "I'm on my waaaaaay, I'm on my way..."

My passport is in order.
Ok, now, I don't mind driving in Scotland and northern England, but I would prefer to not drive in southern England, and definitly not in Manchester! So, what's going on from mid April to mid May?

Linda (Essex Girl) and I should be a able to see you while you're at Micca's - we only live across the river. I know you'll need some rest, but it would be great if we could arrange a chance to meet up for a drink before Terry drags you off to the West Country. We are both planning to go to the Eurogathering May 1-3 if that's the one you're referring to - it's actually in North Lincolnshire which is the other side of the Humber from Yorkshire.

If you're in London on a Tuesday night (after you've got back from the West Country) you ought to try and make Sharp's folk club (at Cecil Sharp House) it's a fun club and you'll usually find Tom Paley and some others from your side of the Atlantic there.

We could offer accommodation if you don't mind sleeping in the caravan which is parked in the drive.

Looking forward to meeting you.

I am harboring a UK fantasy about late-July/early Aug., though...

Darn, I'll miss you both! I'm going to be in the UK from March 23rd to April 16th. I'm going to fly in to Birmingham and Noreen will pick me up. We are going to the National Festival of England. Then I don't know where I'll be going or what I'll be doing until Easter weekend when we are going to the Lancaster Easter Maritime Festival. No other specific plans yet but some ideas. Gee Kendall, I wish you were going to be there earlier, but it will be fun to swap stories after you get back. Have a wonderful time.

Sorcha, I'm sorry I won't get to meet you.

Hey, Morticia, do you have room for me one night? Where are you anyway?

Dave Bryant, thanks for the tip about Tuesday's at the Cecil Sharp House. I do want to go there to visit the Vaughn Williams Library so I'll definitely plan to do it on a Tuesday.

Some of us have to work for a living. I envy you two! Of course, this means that I will have access to Kendall's boat and can put some finishing feminine touches on her in his absence. Pink plaid curtains and matching racing stripes?

Give Theresa and Carole a hug from me. If you can fit them in your suitcase, bring them back with you.

I rode through Manchester with Morticia and Steve. No thanks. It was bad enough that those local nuts passed us on the wrong side, but, IN A CAR WASH??

I talked to my girls and they don't have a problem with me seeing my birthday in Old Blighty.

When my plans are firm, I will post them here. That way, we will all know what is happening.

ooh, I am jealous!I am slated to go back to the UK in early August. maybe before that if I can manageit...

If you're going to Stonehenge, may I suggest staying in Salisbury (a lovely town with a grand cathedral) and doing a daytrip to Avebury. Much cooler than Stonehenge, in many ways. The Red Lion pub and inn is very nice and right there.

Glastonbury is worth a couple days, too. Nearby Wells also has a lovely cathedral. Stay at the Pilgrims B&B in Norbins Road with Koko Newport (a friend of mine). Good pub to eat at: the Who'd a Thought it. Colorful local (non-tourist) pub; The King Arthur on St. George St. Climb the Tor well before Sunset, lovely views.

Oxford is also a gorgeous city and only an hour from London by train or coach. (You could rent your car there).

The other strange thing about Great Britain, other than everyone driving in the wrong direction, is finding that all the towns used in the first line of every dirty limerick ever written actually exist!

BE CAREFUL CROSSING STREETS! When they drive on the left, it means they come at you from your right as you step off the curb - and you've been looking to your left all your life...

Peter.

Karen K, Sorcha & Kendall all in England - BRILL!
I am in Stratford-upon-Avon, which not only has Shakespeare to boast of but is on the edge of some lovely Cotswold countryside. Just PM me to let me know when you can stay. We have some great folk clubs, music sessions and song sessions too!
Hey, Karen I only live about 40 miles from Noreen's new address, so there is no excuse for you not to say hello to me, even though I shall see you at the National Folk Festival (probably) and at Lancaster Maritime Festival (definitely).

Sorcha

I've started a thread on the English National Festival at Sutton Bonington (near Leicester) - it's the last weekend in March, so I guess you won't be able to make it, though you'd have a brilliant time if you could. The location is part of the Nottingham University campus (School of Agriculture) so it's student accommodation.

Plenty B&B's for those (Hopefully few!) nights your are without a fellow 'catters roof! Some not much more than camping fees if you go out of the cities.

Just noticed the mention of flying back to Manchester - We can always find a corner for one or both here at Chez Gnome. The missus has got used to all sorts of waifs and strays by now;-)

Out of interest - I will be following you 2 days later - Flying to Chicago on the 27th:-)

Sorcha, if you are still looking for events, I imagine that there should be Kathy Wallis & Jon Heslop's folk weekend on the second weekend in May (presumably on 14-16) at the Fox & Hounds, near Bridestowe, Oakhampton, Devon EX20 4HF. That is, if it is the same as previous years!
I haven't been able to go for a couple of years myself but I recall it being a beautiful setting and a wonderful weekend of singing! I haven't seen a flier yet but the telephone number of the pub is 01822 820206. Can anyone confirm the details? I may go myself but its a bit early to commit as yet!
Alternatively, on 14-16 May there is the Wheaton Aston Festival, which is in Staffordshire ...
You should also have a look at the fRoots listings site for future festivals (but those beyond February 2004 have yet to be put up!)
Look forward to seeing you!

Sorcha's Itinary so far...........

Hastings May 1-3, for Beltaine, so will most likely miss the Euro Gather in Hull. Sorry.
Don't know how long this will take. Return to London, travel about UK meeting Catters. Go with catsPHiddle to Ireland for a few days. Return to Manchester, travel some more. Arrive in Yorkshire for the Gather. Return to London with Micca/cats. Depart London May 25.

Down here in the South, we can be excused for not having a detailed knowledge of the geography of the northern regions, but here we have you, a Yorkshire man, claiming that part of north Lincolnshire is in his county. Is this yorkish expansionism ? Will the good folks south of the Humber wake one morning to see the landing craft coming out of the mist, like that scene in "The Longest Day" ?

Try the fRoots

link for festivals while you are here. Although at the moment it only goes up to February, all last years events are listed and if you spot something from last year you like the look of then the event will probably be on a similar date this year. Use last years links to get to the various festivals web sites which will probably have this years information available now. Then get out a map and start planning! :-)

It would be great to get you both up to the Hull area say for a week before the Yorkshire Gathering. Sure we could find plenty to keep you (either or both) occupied for the week and I am fairly certain that accomodation will be sortable (75% certain I could accomodate you myself). Would be happy to try to organise and take you up for a few days in Scotland if you can get here though would need help from a few Scots `catters for Music events/itinery when there. Sorry I cant make more precise offers but my personal circumstances are likely to be in a state of change for the next few months. (Job/where I live etc).

As for traveling times, distances etc, Hull is about 200 miles due North of London and is a very comfortable 4 to 4 and a half hour drive (as is the rest of Yorkshire/Manchester area)with a couple of coffee breaks on the way. You could get to most places in England from London comfortably within a days drive and southern Scotland is about the same. Edinborough is about half a days drive from Hull, or a full days drive from London. Most places on the South coast are between 1 and 3 hours drive from London if you avoid busy periods with the West Country (Devon Cornwall Dorset Summerset) being another 1-3 hours further than that. The midlands ( Birmingham/Oxford/Stratford) are mostly under 2 hours away from London. These are all very aproximate times but should give you a guide.

Any West Country Catters can find us in Somerset on the 20th and at the Wednesday session in Boscastle on the 21st and then heading back East on Thursday with a probable detour into the Pricipality to look at Cardiff Castle (Dont Ask Me- its Sorchas Holiday).

Khat - you're not planning to keep Sorcha all to yourself over that first weekend are you ? What about an outing to that pub just round the corner from you - or Linda and I would be quite happy to provide transport to anywhere (even south of the river). Where is Sorcha landing - if it's Heathrow, then it would probably make more sense for Leadfingers to pick her up as he lives fairly near the airport. If it's Gatwick - then we'd be willing to.

As She's a fiddler, the session at "The Cricketers" Greenwich might be an idea if she's around you way on a later Tuesday evening.

Hey Sorcha & Kendall
If you are in the UK on 23 April it is, of course, St George's Day (the Patron Saint of England!), which is also the birthday of Shakespeare.
On Friday 23 April there will be a great evening in the village of Brailes 10 miles south of Stratford-upon-Avon, where I live. First the Ilmington and the Adderbury Village Morris Men will dance outside the St George's Church and at the local pub, the George Inn. Then there is a great music and singing session in the pub with copious amounts of Hook Norton beer being drunk and at some point the Shakespeare Mummers will perform the St George and Dragons Mummers Play, with Snuffy and myself in star roles!!
Then on 24 April, which is the nearest Saturday to Shakespeare's Birthday, there is an enormous procession in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon at the Shakespeare's Birthday Celebrations, with much dancing and street acting. A special event indeed ... and the Shakespeare Morris Men will be both in the procession and dancing around the town - again featuring Snuffy and myself!
You would be very welcome to stay with me.
"T'was on one April morning ...!"
Alan

This firm hires 3 berth Motorhomes for about £440 a week kendall. The VAT refered to is at 17.5% and the price quoted on the web site is from 3 years ago but think it should still work out not much more than £500-£550 a week. Obviously an email to them to check current rates is advisable. http://www.agm-apollo.co.uk/

This company also has simmilar rates for 2-4 berths
http://www.elite-motorhomes.co.uk/rates.htm

This company seem to offer a lot of Caravan for £550 a week.
http://www.gm-motorhomes.co.uk/fourberth.htm

as do these people at £520

This company also look like they may be worth an email and they are close to Heathrow. http://www.leighway.fsnet.co.uk/

This company are more expensive but give a second week free

Others worth a look are

If you want to make arrangements with Bassic and/or me just let us know what you want.

And Dave Bryant - how could you call Bill a Yorkshireman? He's a man that lives in Yorkshire but that doesn't make him a Yorkshireman. We don't give that title away easily. Besides he's got a richly cultural regional background of his own.

Hi again Sorcha & Kendall
I am still offering a great time on Fri 23 and Sat 24 April (as detailed below). It has traditional morris dancing by sides from the traditional morris villages of Ilmington and Adderbury, a traditional mummers play and traditional English music and singing - all on St George's Day.
And there is a chance to see Stratford-upon-Avon and experience the Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations! Wow!
And you could meet the amazing Snuffy, which is a treat in its own right!
As I am early-retired myself I could then deliver you somewhere else in the country on Sun 25 or Mon 26 April if that helps.
Why delay? Book soon while places are still available! Write off today with your deposit! And remember - satisfaction is guaranteed, with your money being refunded if you are not completely happy! And there will be a free CD if you recommend us to a friend!

Brill that you might be able to make it, Kendall! But I understand that you can't confirm anything until you have got your whole time sorted out. Let me know when you have. If I you can get to me on Thursday 22 April too, or I can pick you up from wherever that day, there is a great music and singing session at the Fleece Inn at Bretforton in Worcestershire, which is only 25 minutes away. You can never tell exactly who will turn up or what the balance of singing and music will be but its a fantastic place to visit and the beer is great too, with 5 different real ales and a real scrumpy cider! Snuffy and I were both their last night, along with 20+ other musicians/singers, but we decided to call it a day at 1.30 am!

Sorcha, I think Pip has PMed you on the Annexe. Nice to hear that it seems as if you are going to mangage to visit us. We are actually in Roughton, near Cromer - about 20-25 miles N of Norwich. If you have the time and nothing else on on one of the days it looks like you will be here, maybe you would like a daytime (the session is also in Norwich) trip into the city. There is the Castle/Museum and the Cathedral for starters if you like that sort of thing. A little bit on Norwich here if you are interested.

Kendall
Yes, I don't like the smoke either, particularly when I am singing. The joy of the pewter room in the Fleece Inn, which is a National Trust property and which goes back to the 15th century at least, is that it is a non smoking room!
There is plenty to see in terms of Shakespeare, in addition to the town itself, there is the Theatre and the Shakespeare Trust properties. there are lots of websites to lokk at, including: stratford-upon-avon.co.uk, stratford.co.uk and rsc.org.uk.
Anyway, speak to you further when you have sorted your programme!

I am very interested in the history of the UK, and, although I also enjoy to "pop into a pub for a bit of a piss up" I would prefer to not spend a lot of time that way. (Unless I get pissed, then, I love it)LOL

I arrive at Heathrow 7:30 am on 14 April. Stay with Micca for a couple of days, go to Morticia's. Might hire a car and go exploring, Will be at the Yorkshire gathering, leave London 25 of May.
Everything else is tentative. Alanww has offered to take me to see Shakesperes home, and I would like to see Hastings where my ancestors arrived with Wm. The Conquror in 1066.
Until then, everytime I exhale , I'm going to inhale and count the days.

Scotland is beautiful, you'll love the scenery. Try to drive through Alnwick in the Borders region on your way north; gorgeous small town built around an old castle set amidst the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen...not far from the sea side coast either.

Kendall - can I suggest that if you are interested in history, you really should visit the pubs! Castles and stately home were only the wealthy and their servants, but in most places the oldest buildings that you can look at inside and out are the churches and the pubs, and the pubs have better opening hours! In my village the church is only 19th C but the pub is 17th Century!

Oh dear does that mean that we're going to be forced to go to "The Black Lion" twice that week ? Sill I think we will be willing to make this sacrifice in honour of our visitors. It would be nice if we copuld organise somewhere to sing/play though, as I remember it the aforesaid drinking hole doesn't really permit this. I'll have a think about any other musical venues - after all Linda and I have a car each.

Looks like I'll get Kendall for a couple of days and then drop him in Aldershot for the weekend. After that - who knows? We've got tickets for the Royal Abert Hall on Thursday but he will get the guided tour of the locality at some point - possibly if he's not suffering too much from jet lag on Wednesday. Keith - if possible do you want to meet up?

Dave - Micca told me about the Black Lion - I drove to Plaistow yesterday so I will be trying to make the Sunday night session after the afternoon session at the White Horse (and I'm supposed to be convalescing?) Will talk to Kendall about further plans when he gets here.

It looks like you guys are going to be really busy but another couple of suggestions for your itinerary when you visit Cornwall are to go to the witch museum at Boscastle, it's a facinating way to spend an hour or two and a very beautiful place. Also between Tintagel and Boscastle there is an exceptionally beautiful and spiritual place called St Nectan's Glen it's a bit of a trek through a forest path running alongside a stream eventually ending at a stunning waterfallhttp://www.stnectan.currantbun.com/
Hope the clicky thing works. Anyway it's stunning and very restorative which it sounds like you might need it after all your travels.
The farm that I am hoping to move to is only about 20 minutes away if I'm there by then, you would be more than welcome to stay over. I can back Hawker with the suggestion of Bideford Folk Club I went there a couple of weeks ago when I went down to look for property it was a great night and very friendly.
Have a great time.
~Debs~

23 April, Stratford on Avon with Allenww (If I can work it out
24,25 With Morty and Fiona.
27 April, the Sharpe House, and a day with Ellenpoly.
1 to 3 May, Hastings with Morty and Fiona
4 April with Sussex Carole and Sorcha.

6 to 11 May Chester and Ireland with EmmaB and Sorcha.
21,22,23 May, Yorkshire with Morty and Fiona.

There are some gaps that may or may not get filled, and I expect to be spending some of that time with Morty and Fiona. I'm sure they would be willing to share me.

Latest Update as I am now home and released from Chuffering duties!

Following a superb session in the Black Lion on Sunday , we eventually stopped nattering and tried to get some sleep at Micca and Cats place.

Monday am I was out far too early as a neighbour couldnt be bothered to read the note on my jalopy saying where I was and just sat there blowing his bloody horn til I moved my heap out of his way!

Nice drive down to Stonehenge in FILTHY weather , and had a quick look then on to Avebury for a slightly slower look - NO seven pounds fifty admission at Avebury - then on to Darkest Somerset , staying with friends (Not Catters) . Tuesday was Glastonbury , The Abbey , The Chalice Well (TOTAL Tranquility in a lovely garden) and most of the way up the Tor . Sadly Vertigo and strong winds precluded getting all the way up . Tuesday night was a Bijou Bashette in the Carrisbrook
in Compton Dundon with my old mate from 'No Turn Unstoned'

Wednesday a liesurely drive through even MORE rain acroos Exmoor with a quick look in at Linmouth , then on to Tintagel in much brighter weather - The handrails helped despite the steepness of the steps and we got to the top of the Castle , before heading back up to Boscastle.
Had an excellent Pizza in the Cobweb and then adjourned to the Wellie
for the session there . Some lovely singers in Boscastle by the way!

Did our tour of the Museum of Witchcraft Thursday before heading across to Torrington where we were made very welcome by the ladies at the Visitors centre , who received Torrington Wyoming pheasant badges
from Sorcha and agreed they ought to do a Cavalier badge for Torrington Devon.

On to Motorways then for the run up to Cardiff where we met Sian , Splottman and Nigel Parsons - A shame we missed Gareth - Cant work out how ! Crashed out at Sian's place in Carmarthen , then a nice easy
two hundred mile drive to Windsor so Sorcha could at least SEE the castle though only from the outside. Then an easy drive all the way round the M25 to drop her off in Plaistow , a quick coffee and then drive all the way back round to get home just after The Archers finished. Furter instalments and embellishments will no doubt be following from who ever gets Sorch next . But thats the first week sorted out any way .
