Sorcha, if you are still looking for events, I imagine that there should be Kathy Wallis & Jon Heslop's folk weekend on the second weekend in May (presumably on 14-16) at the Fox & Hounds, near Bridestowe, Oakhampton, Devon EX20 4HF. That is, if it is the same as previous years!
I haven't been able to go for a couple of years myself but I recall it being a beautiful setting and a wonderful weekend of singing! I haven't seen a flier yet but the telephone number of the pub is 01822 820206. Can anyone confirm the details? I may go myself but its a bit early to commit as yet!
Alternatively, on 14-16 May there is the Wheaton Aston Festival, which is in Staffordshire ...
You should also have a look at the fRoots listings site for future festivals (but those beyond February 2004 have yet to be put up!)
Look forward to seeing you!

Thanks, Alanww. I've been meaning to let you know ever since I got my plane ticket. I will definitely make plans to see you. I want to go back to the Teddy Bear store that I saw briefly when I was in Stratford-on-Avon in 1989. I'm assuming it is still there. Glad you'll be in Lancaster. Hope you come to the National, too.

I can't wait. Kendall and Sorcha - Sorry to jump in on your thread. I should probably start my own.

Kendall......you don't need to bring camping gear....there are plenty of UK catters that have spare sleeping bags and tent space!!!.....

Sorcha's Itinary so far...........

Tentative:
April 17--Land in London 12:45 PM. Micca/catsPHiddle pick me up. Go to Micca's house and meet with Leadfingers(maybe).

April 18--rest

April 19, Monday--Leadfingers collects me from Micca's and we head to Cornwall/Tintagel, stopping at Glastonbury Tor and Stonehenge on the way. Hastings May 1-3, for Beltaine, so will most likely miss the Euro Gather in Hull. Sorry.
Don't know how long this will take. Return to London, travel about UK meeting Catters. Go with catsPHiddle to Ireland for a few days. Return to Manchester, travel some more. Arrive in Yorkshire for the Gather. Return to London with Micca/cats. Depart London May 25.

Bill\Sables - your posting worries me. Down here in the South, we can be excused for not having a detailed knowledge of the geography of the northern regions, but here we have you, a Yorkshire man, claiming that part of north Lincolnshire is in his county. Is this yorkish expansionism ? Will the good folks south of the Humber wake one morning to see the landing craft coming out of the mist, like that scene in "The Longest Day" ?

Try the fRoots

link for festivals while you are here. Although at the moment it only goes up to February, all last years events are listed and if you spot something from last year you like the look of then the event will probably be on a similar date this year. Use last years links to get to the various festivals web sites which will probably have this years information available now. Then get out a map and start planning! :-)

It would be great to get you both up to the Hull area say for a week before the Yorkshire Gathering. Sure we could find plenty to keep you (either or both) occupied for the week and I am fairly certain that accomodation will be sortable (75% certain I could accomodate you myself). Would be happy to try to organise and take you up for a few days in Scotland if you can get here though would need help from a few Scots `catters for Music events/itinery when there. Sorry I cant make more precise offers but my personal circumstances are likely to be in a state of change for the next few months. (Job/where I live etc).

As for traveling times, distances etc, Hull is about 200 miles due North of London and is a very comfortable 4 to 4 and a half hour drive (as is the rest of Yorkshire/Manchester area)with a couple of coffee breaks on the way. You could get to most places in England from London comfortably within a days drive and southern Scotland is about the same. Edinborough is about half a days drive from Hull, or a full days drive from London. Most places on the South coast are between 1 and 3 hours drive from London if you avoid busy periods with the West Country (Devon Cornwall Dorset Summerset) being another 1-3 hours further than that. The midlands ( Birmingham/Oxford/Stratford) are mostly under 2 hours away from London. These are all very aproximate times but should give you a guide.

And I have Sorcha all to myself for most of a week ! I am not sure wether either of us will survive. Any West Country Catters can find us in Somerset on the 20th and at the Wednesday session in Boscastle on the 21st and then heading back East on Thursday with a probable detour into the Pricipality to look at Cardiff Castle (Dont Ask Me- its Sorchas Holiday).

Khat - you're not planning to keep Sorcha all to yourself over that first weekend are you ? What about an outing to that pub just round the corner from you - or Linda and I would be quite happy to provide transport to anywhere (even south of the river). Where is Sorcha landing - if it's Heathrow, then it would probably make more sense for Leadfingers to pick her up as he lives fairly near the airport. If it's Gatwick - then we'd be willing to.

As She's a fiddler, the session at "The Cricketers" Greenwich might be an idea if she's around you way on a later Tuesday evening.

Hey Sorcha & Kendall
If you are in the UK on 23 April it is, of course, St George's Day (the Patron Saint of England!), which is also the birthday of Shakespeare.
On Friday 23 April there will be a great evening in the village of Brailes 10 miles south of Stratford-upon-Avon, where I live. First the Ilmington and the Adderbury Village Morris Men will dance outside the St George's Church and at the local pub, the George Inn. Then there is a great music and singing session in the pub with copious amounts of Hook Norton beer being drunk and at some point the Shakespeare Mummers will perform the St George and Dragons Mummers Play, with Snuffy and myself in star roles!!
Then on 24 April, which is the nearest Saturday to Shakespeare's Birthday, there is an enormous procession in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon at the Shakespeare's Birthday Celebrations, with much dancing and street acting. A special event indeed ... and the Shakespeare Morris Men will be both in the procession and dancing around the town - again featuring Snuffy and myself!
You would be very welcome to stay with me.
"T'was on one April morning ...!"
Alan

I've been checking out motorhomes, 425 pounds for a weekend. Too steep.
Now, this gathering in Yorkshire, what is the name of the town? I found two "Black Dogs" in two different towns. Which one should I book a room in?

This firm hires 3 berth Motorhomes for about £440 a week kendall. The VAT refered to is at 17.5% and the price quoted on the web site is from 3 years ago but think it should still work out not much more than £500-£550 a week. Obviously an email to them to check current rates is advisable. http://www.agm-apollo.co.uk/

This company also has simmilar rates for 2-4 berths
http://www.elite-motorhomes.co.uk/rates.htm

This company seem to offer a lot of Caravan for £550 a week.
http://www.gm-motorhomes.co.uk/fourberth.htm

as do these people at £520
http://www.home-n-away.com/

This company also look like they may be worth an email and they are close to Heathrow. http://www.leighway.fsnet.co.uk/

This company are more expensive but give a second week free
http://www.rdh.co.uk/tariffs.htm

Others worth a look are

Hope this gives you a few more options.

I'll second Bassic in offering fun and accommodation in Hull. I give cheap tours of the historic part of Hull (rough price 1 pint of Guinness) and am available most of the time since I don't have to go out to work or anything silly like that. If you want to make arrangements with Bassic and/or me just let us know what you want.

And Dave Bryant - how could you call Bill a Yorkshireman? He's a man that lives in Yorkshire but that doesn't make him a Yorkshireman. We don't give that title away easily. Besides he's got a richly cultural regional background of his own.

Hi again Sorcha & Kendall
I am still offering a great time on Fri 23 and Sat 24 April (as detailed below). It has traditional morris dancing by sides from the traditional morris villages of Ilmington and Adderbury, a traditional mummers play and traditional English music and singing - all on St George's Day.
And there is a chance to see Stratford-upon-Avon and experience the Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations! Wow!
And you could meet the amazing Snuffy, which is a treat in its own right!
As I am early-retired myself I could then deliver you somewhere else in the country on Sun 25 or Mon 26 April if that helps.
Why delay? Book soon while places are still available! Write off today with your deposit! And remember - satisfaction is guaranteed, with your money being refunded if you are not completely happy! And there will be a free CD if you recommend us to a friend!

Its a shame you can't fit in a visis to Stratford-upon-Avon, Sorcha, but never mind - I am sure you will have a great time anyway. And I look forward to seeing you at the Yorkshire Gathering, if not elsewhere. Enjoy!
Brill that you might be able to make it, Kendall! But I understand that you can't confirm anything until you have got your whole time sorted out. Let me know when you have. If I you can get to me on Thursday 22 April too, or I can pick you up from wherever that day, there is a great music and singing session at the Fleece Inn at Bretforton in Worcestershire, which is only 25 minutes away. You can never tell exactly who will turn up or what the balance of singing and music will be but its a fantastic place to visit and the beer is great too, with 5 different real ales and a real scrumpy cider! Snuffy and I were both their last night, along with 20+ other musicians/singers, but we decided to call it a day at 1.30 am!

If you have the time and nothing else on on one of the days it looks like you will be here, maybe you would like a daytime (the session is also in Norwich) trip into the city. There is the Castle/Museum and the Cathedral for starters if you like that sort of thing. A little bit on Norwich here if you are interested.

Kendall
Yes, I don't like the smoke either, particularly when I am singing. The joy of the pewter room in the Fleece Inn, which is a National Trust property and which goes back to the 15th century at least, is that it is a non smoking room!
There is plenty to see in terms of Shakespeare, in addition to the town itself, there is the Theatre and the Shakespeare Trust properties. there are lots of websites to lokk at, including: stratford-upon-avon.co.uk, stratford.co.uk and rsc.org.uk.
Anyway, speak to you further when you have sorted your programme!

I am very interested in the history of the UK, and, although I also enjoy to "pop into a pub for a bit of a piss up" I would prefer to not spend a lot of time that way. (Unless I get pissed, then, I love it)LOL

If you two get to meet Jon Freeman, give him a hug for me. And PIP too.

So any updated plans, Kendall?

I arrive at Heathrow 7:30 am on 14 April. Stay with Micca for a couple of days, go to Morticia's. Might hire a car and go exploring, Will be at the Yorkshire gathering, leave London 25 of May.
Everything else is tentative. Alanww has offered to take me to see Shakesperes home, and I would like to see Hastings where my ancestors arrived with Wm. The Conquror in 1066.
Until then, everytime I exhale , I'm going to inhale and count the days.

I'm toying with the idea of hiring a car, and driving to Scotland, then meet everyone in Yorkshire.
