Subject: Blue Hills of Antrim From: Gerry Mulvenna Date: 20 Sep 98 - 02:50 AM Anyone have the words to the Blue Hills of Antrim? I've only ever known the first verse and chorus: The Blue Hills of Antrim I see in my dreams Ye high hills of Antrim Ye glens and ye streams In sunshine or shadow in weel and woe The sweet vision haunts me Wherever I go The next verse mentions the Antrim hill Slieveanorra but that's about all I know about it. It's a haunting melody. Thanks Gerry |

Subject: RE: Blue Hills of Antrim From: GUEST,Karyn Date: 02 Aug 01 - 12:48 PM Hi does anyone know where I could find the music to the Blue Hills of Antrim? I have the lyrics, but need the sheet music. |
Subject: RE: Blue Hills of Antrim From: ard mhacha Date: 02 Aug 01 - 01:06 PM The Blue Hill of Antrim by far better melody and Lyrics than the The Green Glens of Antrim. Slan Ard Mhacha. |
Subject: RE: Blue Hills of Antrim From: ard mhacha Date: 02 Aug 01 - 01:14 PM Big Tim`s info on The song 4th July on this site, published in Songs of Uladh [Ulster] by Hughes and Campbell 1904. The Blue Hills of Antrim Slan Ard Mhacha. |
Subject: RE: Blue Hills of Antrim From: Big Tim Date: 02 Aug 01 - 04:20 PM Yes, thanks Ard; lyrics by Joseph Campbell (1879-1944) of Belfast who also wrote My Lagan Love and Gartan Mother's Lullaby, among many, many more poems. Presumably a trad melody (collected by Herbert Hughes, Francis Joseph Bigger and John Campbell (Joe's brother)in Donegal in August 1903, very lovely.) |

Subject: RE: Blue Hills of Antrim From: MudGuard Date: 07 Mar 02 - 04:16 AM Due to a question from someone else this thread came to my attention. Especially the ABC tune. I saved it as a file and opened it in ABC2Win. But when I wanted to draw the sheet music, it said: Calculation gave invalid note length. This sometimes occurs when the default note length is longer than expected. Please check notation near position 93. Can someone please help me - I do not yet understand ABC very well. Thanks in advance, MudGuard |
Subject: RE: Blue Hills of Antrim From: Snuffy Date: 07 Mar 02 - 09:10 AM Andreas, Miditext outputs non-printable note lengths like C5/4 and C7/4. Midi-players have no problem with strange fractions like C248/93 but there is no musical symbol for these - you must either split them into tied notes or simplify them: so the section D2D17/4C7/4| could be split as D2 D4-D/4C-C3/4 or simplified to D2D4D2. Another feature of Miditext is that it treats ties across barlines incorrectly - every instance of |- should be replaced by -| WassaiL! V |
Subject: RE: Blue Hills of Antrim From: Big Tim Date: 07 Mar 02 - 12:07 PM Can anyone recommend a good recording of the song? The only one I have is by the Shannon Singers on a various artistes "Welcome to Northern Ireland" CD on Outlet (Belfast). The album also includes the Green Glens of Antrim! (by Sam Hughes). |
Subject: RE: Blue Hills of Antrim From: MudGuard Date: 07 Mar 02 - 12:19 PM Thanks Snuffy, I will try that! Big Tim, I only have instrumental recordings of it, so I can't recommend a song recording. MudGuard/Andy |
Subject: RE: Blue Hills of Antrim From: MudGuard Date: 08 Mar 02 - 08:53 AM Snuffy - I tried it and it works now. Thanks for the hint - I hope I will remember it next time... Andy/MudGuard |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Blue Hills of Antrim From: GUEST Date: 06 Sep 14 - 08:54 PM EdR. A beautiful recording of "The Blue Hills of Antrim" is by Eileen Donaghy(Tyrone), Fontana EP(45), TFE 17145, which was done in the early 60's. The later verses she sings seem very different from other versions I've seen. This EP still shows up on Ebay/UK from time to time, along with some of her other LP recordings. A more recent, and, if possible, even more beautiful version is by Maureen Hegarty(Derry/Donegal), and available on You/Tube. The verses there are those listed earlier. I wish I could find some of Maureen's CD's. Ed |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE BLUE HILLS OF ANTRIM (MacCathmhaoil) From: Jim Dixon Date: 09 Sep 14 - 12:07 AM This seems to be the original poem. From Feis na nGleann: A Century of Gaelic Culture in the Antrim Glens by Padraic O'Cleireachain (Ulster Historical Foundation, 2005), page 180: THE BLUE HILLS OF ANTRIM Seosamh MacCathmhaoil (Joseph Campbell) The blue hills of Antrim I see in my dreams, The blue hills of Antrim, the glens and the streams, In sunlight and shadow, in weal and in woe, The sweet vision haunts me wherever I go. The wind's in the heather of sunny Cnoc-leithid, And soft thro' the vale of Gleann-seasg hath it played, O'er young Margie's wemplings and deep Mael's roar, It croons in my heart, and will croon evermore. Sliabh Treastain's in shadow, and Gleannan in tears, Looks sorrowing up at her love through the years, That sad look at Treastain I cannot forget, My heart pines in darkness, my lashes are wet. The sun's on Gleann-duinne and old Sliabh-an-air Thinks only of peace now and never of war, My heart's in the sun now, it sings like a bird, Of question or quarrel it never had heard. O'er lone Luirg-eadain the dim shadows creep And Cois-abhann-dalla is silent in sleep, As night's on the mountain, as sleep's on the stream, My heart is in darkness, my soul is a-dream. Red dawn is at breaking and Sliabh-Mis is glad, In smiles to the green fields and fallows of Braghad, Carraig-bile is waking from night's dewy sleep, And Cealla's young stream with my new pulses leap. Down wild Sliabh-na-ngaoth the Lammas winds roar, Their pealings re-echoed from rocky Pairc-Mor, Gleann-airbh is troubled—my brain is afire, For love unrequited and hindered desire. Meek eve calms the rough brow of mighty Beann-uamhain, And Dubh-ais for sorrow looks out at the moon, As day sets on Sean-cill and Dun-mor macAirt, The sweet light of memory is quencht in my heart. As fleet as the changes on the mountain and vale, So fleet are my moods and so many their tale. I sigh with the shadow, I laugh with the shine, And with joy in the hill's heart there's gladness in mine. The blue hills of Antrim I see in my dreams, The blue hills of Antrim, the glens and the streams, In sunlight and shadow, in weal and in woe, The sweet vision haunts me wherever I go. |
