Co. Kerry is gorgeous with a capital G. Just don't tell too many jokes about the Kerrymen.
If you have a branch of the Irish Tourist Board over your way, get them to send you some literature, they are excellent at providing bundles of the stuff.
'Doing' the Ring of Kerry is touristy, but that doesn't detract from it's pure natural breathtaking beauty.

Although I live in London, I've got a stone cottage on the Dingle Peninsula. It was built by my Grandfather around 1916 after he returned from running a bar in New York. We're slowly doing it up to rentable standard.

It's at the foot of the Conor Pass - the other side from Dingle, in a small village called Cloghane. The whole area is in the Ghaeltacht.

There's music everywhere. People just start a song in the bars if there are no musicians. Even the kids play and sing. Irish visitors there tell me that having such music in the bars is rare in their parts of Ireland. It's still a very unspoilt little spot.

Dingle is a great place and the Slea Head tour West of Dingle is far superior to the Ring of Kerry. Get out to the Blaskets from Dunquin if you have time (and good weather). My favourite bars in Dingle are Dick Mac's, O'Flaherty's and a lovely little bar towards the pier called M T Moriarty's. The woman of the house in Moriarty's is related to the black haired beauty in "Raglan Road".

If you make it over the Pass to Cloghane and Brandon check out my local, O'Connor's in Cloghane and the stunningly situated Murphy's on the pier at Brandon.

This part of the peninsula is dominated by Mount Brandon, the "Mountain in the Sea". It's a great climb.

Go there and enjoy it.

What exactly is your question? Are you asking general questions about Kerry?

Everything anyone has told you about the beauty is true. I have only been there twice but would go there again, gladly. What I remember most is the people. They are warm, friendly and love their travellers. The conversation is lively!

The music is very good but it used to be even better (I'm not sure what is to blame for this) but perhaps it is because as they become more exposed they also become more inhibited. Who knows?

Yes, go to Mt. Brandon (early in the morning) and watch the mist rise. Something you will never forget.

Follow the road out to Ballyferriter and beyond, out to Brendan's Cove. Peek in at Killmakadar (spelling's probably wrong), and the Blasket Heritage Center is tops. If you're in Dingle and you look across the bay, you'll see the tower. Follow the fencerow to the right of the tower down towards the water. The house at the bottom belongs to my wife's kin; they went to school in the building Holden Leathers now occupies and furthered their educations at Colaiste Ide.

An Cafe Literatura (again the spelling!) is a great place for books and sandwiches. And there used to be a pub called The Bridge....

It seems to me the handle started with a D...(and it was NOT Dead Horse ) Thise person sent a PM several mos ago when my friend was going to Ireland, but that thread was no help....catsPHiddle and I are going to Newgrange which is not far fomm Co Kerry, and I need to know who is there......

sorcha... Newgrange is a fair few hours drive from Kerry (but well worth visiting - and from what I've heard Knowth is great too ... you can book a tour of both)... the last time I was back the only way to get into the monuments was by going on an organised tour from the visitors centre.... Newgrange is NWest of Dublin, Kerry is towards the bottom left hand corner of Ireland.

I think you're thinking of Death by Whiskey... he lives in Kerry and is involved in a lot of sessions down there... not sure if he does buses though!!

When I suggested that MAYBE you were exposed and intimidated, you took the words out of very thin context. I merely meant that in the span of time (first visit in 1969, second in 1984) perhaps the difference was that Kerry had seen an influx of visitors and that maybe the music was being influenced and perhaps commercialized

Can you please tell me more about Kerry and the music.

We are to visit Ireland for the first time and would like to play some bouzouki, banjo and bodhran with some local folk in some local sessions while we are there. Any advice would be very welcome. We will be staying at Glenbeigh for the first week in July before moving up to Clare to catch the end of 'Willie Week'.

Kerry is lovely, I've a soft spot for it and my pals in Listowel. There's some fab sessions around Listowel, and a great literary centre (John B Keane centre). The harp and lion usually has sessions, can't remember what night, go in and ask Stephen the landlord what nights, and where - he usually has a core of musicians who organise the session, but chat em up and ask if you can join in with them. John B Keane pub has sessions as does the Listowel arms. There's a few sessions out Finuge way and futher. Ask the locals, you'll get the gen on what's going on.

Good sessions in Ennis, and Doolin. Well worth a visit is the Burren area too.

Oh and the bog centre just outside Listowel on the Tralee road has sessions too - they do a fab Sunday lunch too. Just bring your grappling hooks to get a hold on it! Food mountains!

Dingle is a must, as is the Connor pass - great views of the ring of Kerry. Drive around the dingle pennisula and see the Skellig islands, always reminds me of a dragon going into the sea.

You'll have a fab time Shambles!

IF it is a more "natural" Irish holiday you are seeking....(but, Sorcha, nothing about you seems a "natural lass"....I believe you are more the cafe-latte, snickers-pie, gotta have a Galway-Heart ring.....and yes....I believe in leprochons sort of person to travel with a tour-bus daisy-chain.....of desal-exhaust)....

But...if....just "if" you were a more natural type of person....avoid the "Ring of Kerry" and its cheap commercialism.....head straight south to Dingle Penisulla.....and pleasedon't do swimming with the dolphin.

I also had some good session action in Ennis but found Doolin a bit of a fizzer, nice people playing but goog-FULL of tourists, standing around I must admit to feeling EXPOSED(but not quite naked)..I did hear though, at the time that the popular centre of music there shifts when it starts to attract too many people(tourists). I don't know how much truth to this there is but it's practical, sessions just get too full otherwise(like the sessions at the willie-week, where you have to pretty much commit your self to a pub early in the evening because there's not much chance of geting into any later on). I don't know what the question was either so I thought I'd just have a rave. moocowpooing

I note that a few pubs have nights that are referred to as sessions (some pubs in Dingle for example) but do have the names of featured artists who are playing that night. Is is reasonable to assume that these are more like 'gigs' and that you would not be expected to be able to join in?

Should you go to these (or any other sesions) for the first time carrying your instruments - thus making it clear that you do wish to be able to join in - or should you not take them in with you?

It would be nice to do it right.

Some of the Dingle "sessions" would definitely be "performers" rather than a true session. That being said, there are excellent real sessions both in Dingle and nearby places like Anascaul and Ballyferriter. You would be made most welcome at those with your instruments.

Some pubs have a core group of musicians who they 'pay' to be regulars for the session. It doesn't mean you can't join in, just go up and ask if they mind most people are very accomodating. Another thing... take your instrument with you to the pub gig thing. Sometimes afterwards there might be a session on after. Or leave it in the boot of your car.

Go to Dingle - it's beaut - my fave place. Drive through and head towards the pennisula - a truly rewarding drive out!

Yes, I'd agree with Gargoyle about the Ring of Kerry can be very touristy. I've had many a fine time in Sligo too.

Most sessions don't start till way after 9pm - be prepared for a late night (long night). Have a kip before you go out I find always helps... though its never stopped any of us from having a kip in the session and then going on to the second wind...

Ella's certainly got it right.

Much of the music in Dingle is booked performers, but people arriving with instrument cases may well be asked to come up front and contribute to the evening's entertainment. There are open sessions as well, but as they move around it's best to check out the where and when as soon as you get there. Publicans and people gigging will probably know, or you could check with the guy in the record shop who plays in the 'Blasket Cases', who also may know.

any way, what ever - you'll have a great time discovering places... try taking the not obvious roads from places (we usually get to a cross roads and one of us in the car has to pick the direction - makes for a fun drive).

I'm trying to remember a place just outside listowel for a good sesh... if I can remember the village ( a friend drove me there... I was in the back of his transit van - with a pile of other people - so didn't see the name of the village as he took us there!) If I do I'll pm it...

Ah yes Larry! Mazzarella O'Flaherty...a friend I haven't seen in very many years. If you bump into her Shambles, give her Richard and Patricia's best regards and say that Richard is still "ruined" (I shaved off facial hair between a couple of visits which earned me that adjective!)

Dick Mac's next door to Maz's is often good for a session as well as being a famous pub. I still use the monogrammed strap made specially for me on the premises about 18 years ago with my octave mandola! Once I went in there with Maz (her "office"!) for coffee at about 11am and didn't leave till about 5am the following morning. That's what I call a session and nearly everybody in Kerry came in at one time or another! Modesty prevents me from revealing how many pints of Guinness I downed but I don't remember paying for any!

There are some wonderful pubs in Kenmare and some great traditional music played in them.
What is particularly appealing, as others will have noted, is that traditional music in Ireland is a part of everday life rather than something 'different' or 'special',and Kerry is no exception.
