On impulse, I viewed the source code of the page (VIEW--> SOURCE) to see whether you had posted an URL or not. There was an URL inside angle brackets but no HTML anchor coding to allow it to display in your post. I don't know whether you used a A HREF code for it or not but it wasn't saved.

Anyway, Amazon won't let you link to one of their sound files from another website. You have to go to the page to hear them.

Well ... MUDCAT strikes again! Bob(deckman)Nelson here. Maggie, AKA "Stilly River Sage" alerted me regarding this thread. I've been distracted for several weeks, so I have not been able to pay attention as I would prefer.

Open Mike: I appreciate your mention of my heritage in this thread. However, I feel I need to explain that my "Finnishness" comes from Grandparents that immigrated in the 1890's. This means that my knowledge of Finland, it's languages and cultures, is really quite antiquated. When my late Father and I studied the modern Finnish language together, we were always shunted to the rear of the room as our vocabulary was olde. I did learn how to say, "Shut up and sit down!"

Regarding Joiking. I have heard of it, but it's important to realize that Joiking comes from the Lapplander (Saami) people. The Sammi and the Finns are different people all together. I learned that there are 26 diffent language dialects, all in a country the size of western Washington and western Oregon combined. And "all together" really is the proper phrase, as the Lapps have free travel over four, or is it five, countries North of the artic Circle.

I also mention this as I know of at least one Finnish MUDCATTER, "AKS", from who I received the long missing translation of a song I was seeking. KITTOS AGAIN! And I suspect that there might well several MUDCATTERS from Lappland.

Going back to the subject: I know that the Finns generally, and my Grandparents particularly, have/had a very wary regard for the Lapps. After all, legend has it that the Lapps can controll the weather, can use charms for all purposes, and are generally not to be messed with. Legend also said that the early Vikings always included at least one Lapp to cause favorable winds.

Hi! Joiku normally has no lyrics at all, and if it does have, they are short and brief. It is mainly lilting on syllables consisting of (initial) liquid consonants and vowels or diphtongs. That's why they really do sound like "I'll oil loyal lawyer's alloy loy" (to the point, Paul B!:)

Wonderful thread. I loved the joiking samples on Amazon; it reminded me a bit of Australian aboriginal music, with digeridoo. It was amusing and a bit telling that under the "customers who bought this also bought..." rubric, it said: no titles available.

Baiki magazine for a time....alas it appears as it it is no
longer in publication...a great resource and a great unifying
factor for those of us who are actual or percieved Samer!

In Lancashire (and indeed in many other parts of England) yoiking is still athriving tradition. mainly practised on Friday and Saturday nights it often (though not exclusively) includes the use of a large white yoiking bowl. Various ceremonies precede the act of yoiking. They are usually quite specific to the individual/locality. In my area the yoiking is usually follows copious quantities of Robinsons and a Madarse or Vindaloo. If not too many lamposts are kissed in the ensuing perambulations the final act of yoiking will be carried out in the comforts of ones own yoiking chamber.

Berit Nordland (my friend Kirsten's aunt!) is a good joiker- there is (or was) a CD available. Kirsten told me that a joik is a personal attribute of the subject, and it epitomises that person's character or history.

Not speaking Sami, to me they all sound a bit like "I'll oil loyal lawyer's alloy loy", but the gapped- scale tunes are delicious.

The show, "Sound and Spirit", is based at WGBH, Boston, and that week's program was entitled, "Out of Finland." I always enjoy the show, (can you say "amateur ethnomusicologist" ten times, fast?), but that week was particularly fine! Here's the address for the bibliography:

of course you might ask Deckman, as he would know first hand..
but the Sami people often use the Joik as a song to praise a
person, or explain about something. You can hear it on Sweet Sunny North, a recording don by David Lindley and Henry Kaiser about 10 years ago. there is a Sami performer called Wimme (pronounced Vee-May) who
has a funny yoik (or Joik) about Texas where he repeats "Texas" in different resonant tones...a vocal art. Joik is said to be a way of purifying yourself. the Sami (a.k.a. Lapp-but they consider that term derogatory)are also called the "European Indians" their vocal chanting sounds similar to native american chantnig..mnay of the North Side Records have joik www.noside.com
