Subject: Lord Yester From: GUEST,croc Date: 22 Jan 04 - 04:35 PM Does anyone have the lyrics for the Williamson / Weir song, Lord Yester please? |
Subject: RE: Lord Yester From: Herga Kitty Date: 22 Jan 04 - 04:42 PM It's not "the Williamson /Weir song", it's trad, Lord Yester was a real person, and Carolyn Robson sings it too. Malcolm Douglas probably knows the sources. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Lord Yester From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 22 Jan 04 - 05:49 PM I don't think it is traditional, you know; Roy Williamson set several of George Weir's poems. I don't know anything about the man, though. Susanne posted the lyric here a year ago: Lord Yester. I found it by asking the search engine for lord yester. Thread #20328 Message #859422 Posted By: Susanne (skw) 05-Jan-03 - 06:22 PM Thread Name: Corries Scots Songs - Would You Like One Subject: Lyr Add: LORD YESTER (George Weir, Roy Williamson)
LORD YESTER |
Subject: RE: Lord Yester From: Susanne (skw) Date: 22 Jan 04 - 06:52 PM I have a Corries recording of it, and they credit it to George Weir / Roy Williamson. Other than that, the only info I have so far is that Yester is a manse in the village of Gifford, near Edinburgh. Kitty, can you tell us more about the noble lord? |
Subject: RE: Lord Yester From: Herga Kitty Date: 23 Jan 04 - 02:28 AM Malcolm - I stand (well, sit actually) corrected! Suzanne I just searched on Google. John Hay, 1st Lord Yester was apparently an ancester of both Winston Churchill and Prince William. He died in 1508. Kitty |

Subject: RE: Lord Yester From: weepiper Date: 23 Jan 04 - 05:34 PM Thanks Eugene, that link was fascinating to me - I went to Yester Primary School in Gifford and have been in the Goblin Ha' many times. |
Subject: RE: Lord Yester From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 23 Jan 04 - 05:48 PM The poor chaps seem to have got themselves pretty heavily embroiled in Douglas power-games over the years, don't they? Does anyone know anything about George Weir, incidentally? Ewan McVicar might be the man for that... |
Subject: RE: Lord Yester From: Eugene Judge Date: 23 Jan 04 - 08:51 PM Weepiper Thanks for the thanks. Eugene |
Subject: RE: Lord Yester From: GUEST,croc Date: 24 Jan 04 - 01:15 PM Thanks all, especialy you Eugene, I think you have solved it. I have the Carolyn Robson Cd with some indecipherable words in the first verse. Your link to history tells me it is probably Branxton Brae. Croc |
