Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: GUEST,Augie Date: 20 Sep 04 - 12:51 PM Aw Man, Stevie's been gone now 20 years this week. If you're a die-hard Goodman fan, who can you turn to now for licks and lyrics like his? |

Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 25 Jan 04 - 03:44 AM Here it is, Jeep Man, with the proper title! A good quick encore song. Sorry I don't do tunes or chords. Original has slide guitar in the pauses, I add a few "Whoa Whoas" and a bit of kazoo! I AIN'T HEARD YOU PLAY NO BLUES (Steve Goodman) My baby came to me this mornin' She said: "Honey, I'm confused. If me and B.B. King were drownin' Which one would you choose?" I said: "Baby", I said: " Baby" I said: "Hey, baby" I ain't never heard you play no blues ." RtS (my "audience" likes it 'cause it's short. Sheila feels it's too close to the truth!) |
Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: Matt_R Date: 24 Jan 04 - 11:13 PM Oh yeah, I meant to say I found those albums last Saturday. |
Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: Matt_R Date: 24 Jan 04 - 11:08 PM "So you grew out of Oasis, Teenage Fanclub and Travis" Are you kidding? I can't leave my roots! hahah. In fact, I managed to find Teenage Fanclub's Thirteen in a used CD bin, much to my excitement...along with some Housemartins, Velvet Underground and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. |
Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: Jeep man Date: 24 Jan 04 - 09:14 PM Hey, Roger, is that a shore nuff blues song or am I just guessing? If so I would like to have it, if not, you should write us one. Jeep |
Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 24 Jan 04 - 05:29 PM I remember sitting on my front porch with my mother and father (may they rest in peace) and singing Goodman's "Old Smoothies" for them. My mother's eyes were shining with the beginning of tears, she liked it so much. |
Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: Mark Cohen Date: 24 Jan 04 - 02:53 PM Hey, Matt, good to see you again. You should check out this thread, which started back in your Mbo days. It includes wonderful reminiscences by the likes of Art Thieme, Saul Broudy, and Harvey Andrews (check out Harvey's story of the time Steve followed him at a concert). Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: GUEST,Ed Date: 24 Jan 04 - 02:29 PM So you grew out of Oasis, Teenage Fanclub and Travis? A shame if you did, Matt |
Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: Matt_R Date: 24 Jan 04 - 02:21 PM Ah yes...such great songs. I especially love the live versions of his songs...his on-stage banter with the audience is great. "Well, this is another song about the road...and you know, who cares?" I've found that the music I write myself is most inspired by Steve Goodman, Dougie MacLean, Jim Croce, Bob Dylan and Tom Paxton. |
Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: Ebbie Date: 24 Jan 04 - 01:30 PM I love the man and his mind and his articulateness and his music. Great, great loss. 36 years old. His songs get sung at our weekly song circle. |
Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 24 Jan 04 - 01:26 PM A great artist. Arlo Guthie made a minor chord/melody change to Steve's original " City of New Orleans", and to ears that knew Steve's version first, it has always sounded like an unnecessary "gimmicky" alteration. But Arlo's version is the way it's usually heard. |
Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: GUEST Date: 24 Jan 04 - 01:02 PM He lived longer than anyone expected him to thanks to the dietary changes his wife put him on for the lupus. Stevie didn't have lupus, he had leukemia. I suspect it was his many bouts of chemotherapy and his doctors at Sloan Kettering that were the major factors in extending his life. |
Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: van lingle Date: 24 Jan 04 - 11:48 AM Best solo live performer I ever saw. There is a boxed set out there somewhere, Matt. I saw it at Borders and I'm not sure how complete it is but you don't want to miss Artistic Hair (various live performances) or Somebody Else's Troubles (contains The Dutchman).vl |
Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: MAG Date: 24 Jan 04 - 10:04 AM He lived longer than anyone expected him to thanks to the dietary changes his wife put him on for the lupus. CCB is a funny song but I am glad his family, and us, had him a bit longer. |
Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: Charley Noble Date: 24 Jan 04 - 09:58 AM He even previewed the end of the 20th century, and taught us how to get by with somebody's else's troubles...and raged against injustice in his "Chicken Cordon Blues." Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: Willie-O Date: 24 Jan 04 - 09:20 AM He totally is, or was. We sure lost some great all-around musicians very prematurely in 83/84--Stan Rogers, Lenny Breau and certainly Steve Goodman. You could play a hell of a good set--in fact a full evening's worth-- of his lesser-known songs without touching City of New Orleans Willie-O (hi Matt) You Never Even Call Me By My Name |
Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: Matt_R Date: 24 Jan 04 - 09:01 AM Yep, I'm talking about the ONLY Steve Goodman as far as I'm concerned! I wish I could actually find his albums in stores. His version of "As Time Goes By" is not only the best version ever, it's one of my favorite songs ever. Poor Steve :-( |
Subject: RE: Steve Goodman Is THE MAN From: Raptor Date: 24 Jan 04 - 08:38 AM I've Been playing Vegamatic for years one of my favorites! He is Great! Raptor |
