Does anyone know the date and details for this year's 'Song Day' ? Last year's one in Hitchin was on March 1st, so I reckon this year's must be coming up again pretty soon. I ventured across the border to it last year - a thoroughly good day it was, too.

Thanks !

Every Friday is Folk-song night with the 'Windward' folk-song club in St Albans.

This week Bob Fox appears at the Comfort Hotel with support from George Papavgeris, Steve Last and Christine Connelley.

Any idea who ran the last one ? - presumably someone from the Hitchin area.

Kendall - I think that Jaqui's relatively new to the Hertfordshire scene - on the other hand Breezy likes to be involved in anything around the county - although I don't think he's turned up at the Lion at Eastwick, which is frequented by mainly Essex types from over the border.

Aha ! By a round-about way, I have found out the details:

Saturday March 6th 2004
"Sunrunner" pub, Bancroft, Hitchin, Herts.

Starts 12.30, finishes around 6.30 with a buffet. Cost: around 5 pounds, pay on the door.

"Bancroft" is the name of the road, in the centre of Hitchin town. Parking further along the road in supermarket car park (I seem to remember from last year it was Sainsbury's). Buffet is at the end of the day, but the pub also does good lunchtime food, too.

Sad thing is (for me, anyway)...I won't be able to make that day...Thoroughly recommend it to anyone not too far to travel to it -it was well worth the trip out from Essex.

The air has just turned blue in this neck of the woods. Here was me thinking that there was a good local event to go to and it's taking place about ten days after I let the sawbones break my toes and stick them in plaster! I'm being kidnapped by my daughter for a couple of weeks just to make sure that the old dear can cope with the crutches and won't allowed to come back to Hertford until about the 9th - if it is judged that I can be trusted to look after myself. (When did my daughter become my mother????

Enjoy - whoever goes - and let me know how good it was please.

Hi Guru

Isn't it Graham Meek that runs (it from Life & Times)

or is it Barry Goodman?

Sounds interesting - might try and make it.

Jaqui - how far away does your daughter live - couldn't someone come and kidnap you from there for the day ?

Dave - She lives in Newark - about 100 miles up the road - which is just a little too far really, otherwise I might just be tempted to brave her wrath (she's really fierce and doesn't think that I'm totally capable of looking after myself although she may have a point as far as the music is concerned!)

Just got the notice for this in the post today - most of the details are as Jeanie posted above, but here it all is. It's always a very enjoyable day. Parking can be a bit of a bugger, so come a bit early to find a place (there are carparks not too far away, near the supermarket). The Sunrunner does good beer, and good food as well :

A Day of Song with Barry Goodman. Saturday 6th March at Sunrunner PH, Bancroft, Hitchin, Hertfordshire.

12.30 - 7.00 pm. Fee of £6 to be collected in the day. That includes the buffer served at about 5.00 pm.

"This session aims to provide opportunities to participants to perform their own favourite songs and to add to their repertoire. There will be plenty of opportunity for all types of contributions. Inexperienced or nervous singers will be encouraged, the more experienced will be given their head.

The session takes place in a private room in the pub which stays open all day. A buffet will be served at about 5.00 pm. The session is designed to finish at 6.30 pm, but can be extended if participants wish it to do so."

Here is a map

Sinning has to be arranged unofficially.

As it goes round the room it's quite usual for someone to play a tune instead of a song. And also for various people to join in on a musical accompaniment, where that is wanted.

Though poetry is my thing, I appreciate the opportunity to sing a song or two at such an event. Trouble is, my voice tends to wander up and down the scale.

Occasionally I get it right, but only just. Usually when there is hardly anyone around!

Planning to be there. Its a good day and the start of the season for me.

Simon

Here's a map showing where it is, when you've got to Hitchin. (And if you fiddle around with the controls at the bottom of this map you can get a map showing where Hitchin is.)

It was a fun afternoon with some great singing, and it was also a chance to meet some new singers. The buffet was excellent and very welcome after all that wonderful beer (Shannon at only £1.75 a pint).
Linda was rather miffed at not being able to make it - let's hope that it doesn't clash with her son's birthday party next year.
