an Púca was asking about Irish-language songs about priests. Some are posted on Mudcat already. Here is another (with translation and notes below)

SAGART NA CÚILE BÁINE

Thug mé an ruaig ó Thobar Mhic a' Duain
Agus chugat anuas le fána,
Ó chontae na Mí go Loch Dearg na Naomh,
Agus chugat aníos Cruach Phádraig.
'S ar shiúil mé go fóill níor chuala mé aon cheol,
Ar orgán, fliúit nó cláirseach
Mar a bhí ag an lon i dteach pobail Mhaigh Eo
Ag sagart na cúile báine.

'S má théann tú go deo go Contae Mhaigh Eo,
Cuir tuairisc ar fhear de Sheoigigh,
Is gheobhaidh tú é ag teacht chugat san ród
Mar bheadh aingeal as ríocht na glóire.
'S téir ar do ghlúine is aithris dhó do rún,
'S gur peacach thú a ghluais ins gach ceard,
'S ar uair ar mbáis na flaithis go bhfá'
Ó shagart na cúile báine.

'S éirigí suas go dtéimid chun siúil,
Go bhfaighimid siúd ón bápa,
'S go bhfaighimid léas ar theach pobail Mhaigh Eo
Do shagart na cúile báine.
'S éirigí suas go dtéimid chun siúil,
'S go bhfaighimid sagart na cúile báine,
A d'imigh uainn aréir is nach bhfillfidh go héag.
Mar tá sé i Loch Éirne báite.

'S tá Contae Mhaigh Eo faoi leatrom go deo
Ó caillleadh an t-aonmhac Seoighe;
'S nach gcuirfeadh sé bród ar aon duine beo
A d'fheicfeadh é san éadach Dé Domhnaigh?
'S cuireadh sé séala ort ag dul insan gcré,
Agus gheobhadh sé na grásta ó Chríost,
Agus chuirfeadh sé ar an eolas an té nach mbeadh cóir,
Agus mhúinfeadh sé an treoir dhó díreach.

'S níorbh ionadh liom péin dhá lasfadh an t-aer,
'S na réaltaí chomh dubh le háirní,
Is an dealramh ón ngréin is an ghealach í fhéin,
Ó cailleadh ceann seasta na háite.
'S paidir agus cré 's a' dá aspal déag,
Is in onóir do Rí na Glóire,
'S gan muid a chur sa gcré nó go mínítear an scéal
Ar shagart na cúile báine.

translation (by Brían Ó Ruairc/ O'Rourke)
THE PRIEST OF THE FAIR HAIR

I gave a run from the Well of Mac Duan,
And down the slope towards you,
From County Meath to Loch Derg of the Saints,
And up Croagh Patrick towards you.
And in all I've walked so far I did not hear any music,
On organ, flute or harp,
Like the music of the blackbird in the church of Mayo
For the priest of the fair hair.

And if you ever go to County Mayo,
Ask after a man of the Joyces,
And you will find him coming towards you on the road
Like an angel from the kingdom of glory.
Go on your knees and tell him your secret,
And that you are a sinner who travelled in every quarter,
And at the hour of our death you will get heaven
From the priest of the fair hair.

Rise up and let us set out walking,
Till we get that from the Pope,
Till we get a lease on the church of Mayo
For the priest of the fair hair.
Rise up and let us set out walking
Till we find the priest of the fair hair,
Who went away from us last night and will not return till death,
For he is drowned in Loch Erne.

And County Mayo is distressed for ever
Since the only son of the Joyces has died;
And would it not give pride to any living person
Who would see him in his robes on a Sunday?
And he would put a seal onyou going into the grave,
And he would get the graces from Christ,
And he would set on the right road the person who would not be in order,
And he would teach him the way directly.

And I myself would not wonder if the air were to light up,
And the starts were to turn as black as sloes,
And likewise the shining of the sun and the moon itself,
Since the stalwart ofthe place has died.
A prayer and the Creed of the twelve apostles,
In honour of the King of Glory,
And may we not be put in the clay till the story is explained to us,
Of the priest of the fair hair.

Brían O'Rourke's notes from the recording "Idir Dhá Shaile" of singer Sarah Ghriallais:
"Like many songs in Irish, this one does not tell a story; it assumes rather that listeners are already in possession of the facts on which the verses comment. If, with the passage of time, the details of the events referred to are lost, such songs become enigmatic. That is the case here; I have never come across any background information on this lament for a drowned priest."

The song is also published, with only minor variation in the text, in Mícheál Ó hEidhir, Cas Amhrán, Cló Iar-Chonnachta

I wonder if "thug me ruaig" might possibly be translated rather as "I took it on the lam"?

Sagart na Cúile Báine is also on a recording of Pádraig Tom Photch Ó Ceannabháin, CIC028 "An Aill Uaithne" (Cló Iar-Chonnachta)

Hi, are these texts copyright or are they in the public domain?

Regards from Jacqui Rutten (Australia)

Hi GUESTJacqui

This particular song, in its Irish language version, would be Public Domain. Briain's translated version is presumably copyright.

Regards
