If no one here comes up with an 'official' melody, perhaps a letter asking to what tune the words are sung would yield results. |

"We worked to clear the wreck while the tempest loud did roar,
Their valiant efforts failed to save the brig, and at last crewmen had to climb upon a passing barque and leave the Jura to her doom:

Subject: Lyr Req: Newfoundland song From: Crane Driver Date: 27 Jan 04 - 03:31 AM As a singer of maritime songs based in Swansea, (Old South Wales) I'm interested in anything to do with Swansea shipping. I recently came across a reference to a song called "The Loss of the Brig Jura" about a Swansea ship which was carrying copper ore from Tilt Cove, Newfoundland, to South Wales. The song is apparently in a book called "Old Songs of Newfoundland" put together and published by a James Murphy in 1929. This work, I guess, is not readily available in the UK. If any of our Trans-ponder cousins can oblige, I would be eternally grateful. I'd like the tune as well as the words, if possible - perhaps some kind soul could scan the page(s) and e-mail me a bitmap - PM for the addy if you can help. Thanks, 'Catters. Andrew |
