The song "Kitchen Man" reminds me of one I heard called "Long Playing Daddy". The er... "Metaphors"! relate to the Long Playing Record - which dates it - although there is no mention in the song of the "microgrouve" technique responsible for creating the LP record! Also interested in the history and origins of the song.

Well, I found out it was recorded by Ruth Wallis, and that it was apparently popular on the Dr. Demento radio show.

It sems to have first surfaced on a compilation record (WALLIS ORIGINAL 2008) about 1953 - it seems to have been possibly first released as a single some time after 1947. No further easy trace of it could I find via Google that had the words - looks like I will have to try to track down a recording somewhere and do it the hard way.

According to allmusic, Ruth Wallis' recording of LONG-PLAYING DADDY appeared on 2 LPs: "Holiday Party," 1949; and "For Sophisticates Only," 1955. I don't see any indication that it has been reissued since then.

Here it is, transcribed from a sound file found at The Internet Archive:

LONG-PLAYING DADDY
Ruth Wallis

I went down to the record shop
To look for something pop.
I took a look around,
And what do you think I found?

I found a long-playing daddy down at the record store.
I found a long-playing daddy. Don't want those others no more.
I used to have the old-fashioned kind.
He used to stop. I had to start him up by givin' him a wind,
But with a long-playing daddy, he plays all night long.

Now a long-playing daddy doesn't give you any rest.
He's got a newfangled gadget and it really is the best.
He's smooth and he's easy and he's always on the move.
You get three times as much because he's always in the groove.
I got a long-playing daddy. He plays all night long.

I had a small forty-five but he was too short for me.
I like my LP daddy; he's more satisfactory.
Short and sweet for grandma might have been all right,
But I'm a gal who likes to be entertained all night.
I got a long-playing daddy. He plays long and strong.

I got a long-playing daddy and now I'm really content.
Never noticed the wear and the tear, and I swear the needle doesn't even get bent.
I used to hate that three-minute kind,
'Cause it was over too soon and I'd be losin' my mind,
But with a long-playing daddy, he plays all night long.

Now believe me, girls, I never liked that old-fashioned pace
Because I always had to pick it up and put it back in place.
He's got a swell attachment. It's really something new.
He comes to the end; he starts again. He's never really through.
I got a long-playing daddy. He plays all night long.

Now with the old kind you get up in a minute or two,
But with an LP daddy there's nothing you gotta do.
He's got an automatic changer. It really is gone.
You just turn over and you play right on.
So, girls, if you're lonesome and blue today,
Maybe what you need is a good long play.
A long-playing daddy plays all night long.
