Subject: RE: love songs 4 Valentine's day From: George Papavgeris Date: 03 Feb 04 - 03:45 AM Thanks for the plug, Breezy. I know you do great justice to "By And By". You can also try "Valentine", track 9 on the "Perfect Moments" album. That's the one that plays on the theme that all usual gifts are transient, so a song is the best way to show the permanence of feelings. No chorus on that one, though... |
Subject: RE: love songs 4 Valentine's day From: aibreán Date: 02 Feb 04 - 09:41 PM I always found "Gently Johnny My Jingalo" (the less wholesome version) a bit cheesy, thanks to too many viewings of The Wicker Man... A. |
Subject: RE: love songs 4 Valentine's day From: GUEST,GUEST, Mac Date: 02 Feb 04 - 11:29 AM David Wilcox has written dozens of clever love songs....."Start With The Ending," "Good Together," "Language Of The Heart," "Kindness," etc., etc.,....one starts off..."Do I dare believe and let love lead my life" (interesting thought) You might want to check out his website....great stuff. Subject: RE: love songs 4 Valentine's day From: breezy Date: 02 Feb 04 - 06:36 AM hi open Mike Maybe El Greko's song 'By and By' might interest you. He wrote it for his wife last year for V day. Its very popular in these clandestine parts. It also celebrates their '30 years down the line - so why does it seem an instant?' together. A very touching song without the predictable soppiness. Well worth a listen. j |
Subject: RE: love songs 4 Valentine's day From: open mike Date: 01 Feb 04 - 06:08 PM long blaCK veil describes a love that is so true--but secret.. and in Lady franklin's lament she is pining for her lost love.. Holly Near and Chris Williamson have Valentine Song on their latest cd oh i guess these are not necessarily corny.. i am gathering material for my radio show which will be on feb 14, so these are among the tunes i am planning to include... others that come to mind are Laurie lewis' "Love Chooses YOu" and Kathy Matea's "Where've you been" , and the ultimate love song is Kate Wolf's Give Yourself to Love... |

Subject: RE: love songs 4 Valentine's day From: GUEST,Mac Date: 01 Feb 04 - 10:33 AM Steve Goodman did a wonderful song called "Old Fashioned" on his album "Words We Can Dance To" I did it at an open mic the other night. I asked "Trish" if she would be my valentine...she said she would, making it 36 years in a row....just lucky, I guess. Anyway, the crowd seem to like it and I think Trish did too. Mac |

Subject: RE: love songs 4 Valentine's day From: Mudlark Date: 30 Jan 04 - 09:18 PM If you're looking for corn, the 20th c. is the place to find it. On the other hand, a very old, yet contemporary sounding love song: Where does it lead, this strange young love of mine Only heaven and the lilies know Where does it lead, this strange young love of mine I must go down where the lilies grow Play on the lily reeds, lowly low Play to him tell he heeds to my woe.... Where does it lead, this strange young love of mine Anywhere it takes me I will go. And the lily theme reminds me of Lagen Love, another beauty. |
Subject: RE: love songs 4 Valentine's day From: Zany Mouse Date: 30 Jan 04 - 06:40 PM Menolly: If you can track down some of Monni's stuff you'll find that she does a lot of extremely funny (but subtle) songs. She goes to Sidmouth every year and inhabits the Theatre Bar. She has a folk club somewhere in Essex but I can't rmember offhand where it is. She has recorded some albums but I'm not sure if they are still commercially available. I'm sure another Catter will come up with something. I know Herga Kitty, for one, knows her. Rhiannon |
Subject: RE: love songs 4 Valentine's day From: dick greenhaus Date: 30 Jan 04 - 05:30 PM My goodness! of all the songs mentioned, only one predates the 20th century. On a folk site, too. tsk.tsk. |
Subject: RE: love songs 4 Valentine's day From: Menolly Date: 30 Jan 04 - 05:22 PM Zany Mouse has correctly identified where I got it from, and unfortunately I have not come across anything else Monni has written. If you can't find it then I'm sure Mick could post the ABC tune for you. I personally think it is one of the more boring songs in the whole world! Subject: RE: love songs 4 Valentine's day From: Kaleea Date: 30 Jan 04 - 03:07 AM "My Funny Valentine" is pretty much a sentimental favorite torch song, considered by many to be corny, & possibly the most anticipated song for the day. For more corn, one might also review the songs of "The Carpenters" and Barry Manilow. (Don't mean to offend Manilow lovers everywhere, but that is a common opinion.) |

Subject: RE: love songs 4 Valentine's day From: Menolly Date: 29 Jan 04 - 03:47 PM This is sickly sweet but I will be singing it onhte day. Valentine's Day Ssong by Monni Aldous 1/ As I awoke on Valentines morning The February sun was shining above And chalked upon my garden wall There was this message from my love If I fill your arms with flowers If I fill your glass with wine If I fill your soul with sweet love songs Will you be mine, mine, mine? 2/ Then I called out to my dear mother And she rose up from her bed I showed her the message on the garden wall And this is what she read If I fill your arms with flowers If I fill your glass with wine If I fill your soul with sweet love songs Will you be mine, mine, mine? 3/ Tell me what should I do dear mother? Such a sweet love message have I. You should take this piece of chalk And you should write him this reply If you fill my arms with flowers If you fill my glass with wine If you fill my soul with sweet love songs Then I'll be thine, thine, thine. 4/ I always do what my mother tells me So to William's cottage I walked And as he has no garden wall Upon his garden path I chalked If you fill my arms with flowers If you fill my glass with wine If you fill my soul with sweet love songs Then I'll be thine, thine, thine. 5/ When my William came home in the evening After plowing the fields all day He found this message chalked on his garden path And this is what it did say If you fill my arms with flowers If you fill my glass with wine If you fill my soul with sweet love songs Then I'll be thine, thine, thine. 6/ Now you all have heard my story Soon my William and I will be wed But I'll never forget that Valentines Day And what those true love messages said If I fill your arms with flowers If I fill your glass with wine If I fill your soul with sweet love songs Will you be mine, mine, mine? If you fill my arms with flowers If you fill my glass with wine If you fill my soul with sweet love songs Then I'll be thine, thine, thine. If you fill my soul with sweet love songs Then I'll be thine, thine, thine. |
