From: GUEST,kendall

I failed a stress test this am, so the doctor admitted me. A nurse shaved my naughty bits, abd they are going to stick a catheter up my femoral artery and taker pictures of my heart.
I'll let you know what happens.

Doesn't anyone want to ask why they shaved his naughty bits when it's his heart they're checking and the catheter goes in his leg? Or maybe it's where his leg meets up with his naughty bits? As long as they didn't use a rusty razor! (And what WYS said about stubble... you'll be able to brush lint off the sofa when you sit on it naked.)

All joking aside, I care about you, friend! I hope they find it's not that serious. Don't tell 'em too many stories or they'll keep you!

"AHHHH SHIT!!!! For what's worth, this test is a piece of cake."

Oh yeah? Would that be the cake that's been left out in the rain? Because mine yesterday certainly didn't feel like any chocolate gateau I've ever had!

Seriously, hope yours is no more painful than mine was, and less if possible, because I know what a big girls blouse you are.

They shave the naughty bits because that's where the femoral vein can be easily accessed. It's a really weird feeling being able to watch your own heart beat knowing it's being controlled by the surgeon who is practically up to his elbows in your naughty bits.

Oh and by the way, your naughty bits will be an interesting shade of purple tomorrow.

I just know that as soon as the wound stops hurting, the stubble rash will start..... Guuuuuhhh!

Oh and Kendall? Try and avoid going up stairs. Down is OK but up hurts like the very devil!

Too early to worry, Kendall. I failed one of these due to an irregular rhythm once. The doctor wouldn't even let me schedule an appointment for later. It was right to a room for prep and down to the OR. Nice drugs though <g>, and that nice warm feeling you get when the dye is released into your chest. It takes a few days for the entrance hole to fully seal but I got a picture to take home showing an almost total lack of any blockage.

I hope you get a picture like that too.

Best case is that the results were anomolous and they wanted to keep you safe. Go for that one. The test is a bit uncomfortable but the worst of it is that you have to lie still for hours to let the femoral puncture seal. As a New Englandah, you wouldn't be allergic to shellfish in the contrast medium, anyway. Think positive, which means negative results. Eric

Kendall, all the best from Rick and me. Hope you're up and about soon - it'll make a good story one day soon, I'm sure.

All the best to you too Liz.

My Dad had an angiogram which showed a blocked artery. The doctor told him that he could fix it now, through the leg, or he could wait six months for an old-fashioned op. Naturally, he opted to get it over with and they did the angioplasty. He was sedated but still awake and had it not been for other conditions that they needed to monitor he could have gone home right away. Amazing, isn't it?

Caring thoughts from me too, Kendall.

My Dad failed a stress test and they sent him straight home to get his kit bag and he was back in the same afternoon and booked for the bypass op the next day.

He's never been better since that op, so in a funny sort of way, maybe things are looking up and not down.

Just remember about the wounded Oz soldiers who, when asked "Does it hurt?" replied, "Only when I laugh!"

Irrepressible humour is the best medicine. And keep building up the storehouse for those funny stories of yours.

Relax Kendall......It's a heart catheterization and it doesn't hurt in the least. The worst part is when they do the cutdown and that's no worse than a bee sting. Partially blocked arteries are not a problem either.   About 4 out of 5 times they can be fixed immediately with a couple of different types of angioplasty which is just like the cath and also painless. Some docs will do them right then.

After a cath is over, you have to lay on your back and remain still for 3-6 hours so they can be sure you won't bleed out....it is the femoral artery and it joins the aorta directly. That part drives me crazy, I can't stand the laying still bit!!

BTW, they are taking pressures, not pictures generally. For pix they are big on echocardiograms, also not a big deal, just a sonagram really. Now if they tell you they want to do a TEE (trans-esophageal Echocardiogram) then run like hell. They will catch you and shove a tube down your throat ..... That one really sucks!!

I have had 9 or 10 of the damn things.....You'll be fine Bro....Relax.

Well, Kendall. I'll admit I hurt for awhile after my bypass, but I only had to laze around for a couple of weeks, so you ought to be able to go dashing off to the UK right on schedule. Think of old Studs Turkle, Kendall. He survived a quintuple (one up on than me and two up on you) and he was in his eighties, for Pete's sake. Now he's in his nineties and still raising holy hell with all the Ashcrofts, Cheneys, Rumsfelds, and their bloody ilk.
Caroline and I will be thinking of you, old buddy, and doing what amounts to praying in our secularism. Glad Sinsull is there to keep us posted and take care of Seamus while those nurses are enjoying your company.

Well folks, so far, the worst part of it is the 6 hourse flat on my arse unable to move for fear of a blowout.
The crew here is unbeatable. My oldest doughter used to work in the Cath lab, and one of my nieces stills works here, so I'm getting the star treatment. (A midnight snack, no less)

The doctor told me I must have a triple by pass, and he can't do it until Monday. So, as Tome T Hall wrote, Here I am in this this dang bed and who'd gonna feed them hogs.

They wont let me go home and come back because I could have a fatal attack. I live alone, and my dog would me no use at all, so, I'm stuck here. I'm in room 721 of the Maine Medical center in Portland Maine. Visitors allowed, but, no Guinness!

You are all great, and I will be in England in April, but I hope it's via the high road nit the low road. I'll be checking in from time to time on their computer in the Solarium.
Can't send PMs though.

My Dad -- a man from Maine -- insisted on driving home to New Jersey from South Carolina during and after a TIA (minor stroke) -- he then drove himself to the hospital where they put in a stent (little thing that props an artery open). He was very surpprised to walk out of the hospital and discover that family was there to drive him home. He later decided that the stent surgery must have "caused" the stroke and constantly bitches about the residual slur he has.

Men from Maine!

Mother's favorite saying:

You can tell a man from Maine -- but you can't tell him much.

Are you one of them ornery kind, Kendall?

OK folks. Latest update from Kendall.
He was lying in bed with the oxygen mask on when a young nurse came in to massage his arms and legs for circulation, take his temp and blood pressure.
The Cap'n said thro' the oxygen mask, "Are my testicles black?"
The young nurse, shocked, said "I'm just here to massage your arms and legs, and take your temperature and blood pressure, sir."
Kendall repeated thro' the mask, "Are my testicles black?"
She lifted the sheet, lifted his hospital gown, moved his wedding tackle out of the way and peered down.
"No sir, they look just fine," she said.
The cap'n removed the oxygen mask and murmured, "That was lovely nurse, but are my test results back?"

Hey, Kendall! My brother had sleep apnea and had some surgeries for it. The last one wasn't laser like the others, it was with a good, old fashioned, scalpel. So the surgeon did an EKG (ECG) and found a very small, very faint anomaly. Said he'd do the surgery and that Tony should get checked out later by his doctor.

All went well, and finally Tony went for an echocardiogram stress test.

He didn't go home. They slammed him in the hospital and next morning they did nine (9) bypasses.

He said to tell you that he's still ahead.

If he can survive that AND seven kids, you can go to Blighty after three.

Take care, and get well, ya hear?

I wrote this before, but I'll pass it along to you as well Kendall. BTW, if you're having the bypass, hopefully they take the vein they will use from inside rather than your leg. Your leg will bother you for weeks after the chest trauma is over!!!

Ya know Kendall, it's hard to have a sense of humor when you're in pain ain't it? And the folks who staff these damn places seem to have a weird sense of humor themselves.
When I had the quad by-pass, they went to great lengths to explain prior to the surgery about "What to do if you have to cough." They explained all the details of holding the pillow over your chest, arms crossed, etc. Then they said that this was traumatic to the surgical incision (read: chopping your breastbone in half with an ax--actually they use a nice little POWER SAW!!!). Then, as soon as you are off the vent, the first thing they want you to do is COUGH. Now I know this is to keep your lungs clear and prevent pneumonia, but you'd think they could come up with a "Lung Sucker" of some sort so you wouldn't have to wouldn't you? So you cough for them and they say, "Again...a little deeper this time." You wish at this point you were stronger so you could get out of bed and kick their ass.

After this comes the cruelest joke. You feel a sneeze coming on. All of a sudden, in that nanosecond before you sneeze, a whole series of thoughts fly through your brain which can be summarized by, "If a cough liked to kill me, this is gonna' be a motherfucker.......and the SOB's never MENTIONED sneezing!!!" After the sneeze, when someone has picked up the quivering blob on the floor that used to be your body and returned it to an upright position, thought #2 hits-----"Sneezes always seem to come in 3's." Uh-huh. Two more sneezes later, you are barely alive and wondering where you can steal some morphine when a nurse walks in and, after a check of your vitals, says, "Okay, now cough...Have to keep those lungs clear don't we?" You try to remember anyone you've known in the past who might be willing to drop by the hospital and beat this bimbo to a bloody pulp.

And why do they all say "we." Like, "We have to cough....We have to get our exercise....We have to take our shower." The main practioners of this plural art are always the most unattractive women you have ever met and you want to say, "Honey, I wouldn't get in a shower with you if I was being attacked by Killer Bees."

Of course there are bedpans......How the hell can you shit lying flat on your back? Actually you're arched backwards. So they whip the sucker under you and then leave......and don't come back......and in the meantime a group of friends walk in.........right then.............

And get a note from your doctor if they use wire and staples to hold your sternum together because you will set off metal detectors stark naked. I'm serious here, especially in this day and age.

I really enjoy the part where you try to move around with all the stuff hooked up. Especially fun is walking down the hall with your IV stand held by one hand, your catheter bag half full of piss in the other, and your ass hanging out. Very attractive.

Well Kendall, I hope you're having a fun time tonight....the fun doesn't last much longer!!!!

Spaw

My old uncle had a hemorrhoid break free and lodge in his heart a few years back. It worked very much like the bypass on the Interstate (I-39) near here. They put in a concrete cloverleaf and eliminated the need for any bypass at all. (You can only hope.) Then they doused it with Prep-H., shrunk it, and it passed easily through the main artery, Interstate-80, also near here, until it was right back where it should've been. Many say that our town, Peru in Illinois, really is the anus of the state. And Bush just introduced to congress a bill that will make the Concrete Cloverleaf the National Flower of the U.S.A. That seems somehow quite appropriate to me since those now outnumber any other variety of flower.

Whatever !!!

Be well, good sir.

You guys are great! Gargoyle, you surprise me, thanks man.

Spaw, the details are this: I failed the stress test. At first I thought, ok, I lack stress, but no, they have their own slant on that.

Boils down to this, I have 3 arteries that are partially blocked with something, probably lobster meat, and I need a triple bypass. That will be done on Monday am at 6:30.
Assuming they don't screw it up, I'll fill you in after.

Well, this is fine stuff, Skipper! You're in excellent company, folks who have been bypassed and survived it!! I don't know why anyone would want to do such a thing as bypass Kendall though. I find it unthinkable, myself.

If they get that lobster meat outta there tell them you want a doggie bag -- that stuff is pricey.

I hope this gives you a chuckle. As I was laying in my hospital bed, JUST before starting my hip surgery, I was visited by all kinds of people: the anesthesiologist, the blood taker, the blood giver, many nurses, and of course the DOCTOR. I smelled the doctor's breath ... NO whiskey smell. I looked at his hands and they were NOT shaking, even though he had blood on his clothes from the previous patent.

He then asked me several questions, handed me a magic marker pen, and told me to put an "X" on which hip I wanted replaced. After I did that, he wrote his own name on the right side. A few minutes later, when I was finally alone, I took the same pen that was on the table and drew a verticle line over my right hip. Then I scribbled "START" and "STOP."

When I saw him on his morning rounds early the next morning, he was laughing as he came into my room. He said that he'd NEVER seen that one done before and he loved it! CHEERS, Bob(deckman)Nelson (who's ALSO had a triple bi-pass)

Update:
I visited Kendall yesterday. He has a very young and pretty Kelly waiting on him hand and foot. Coffee? Cream and Sugar???? Anything else? Fluff your pillow???

But fate has stepped in and ENTER the roommate from hell with his mouth on "automatic" (Kendall's description, not mine). He even talks while he reads the newspaper. And what does he talk about? "This is the part that will hurt the worst..." Great! And to add insult to injury, he is a football fan. Can't wait for Superbowl Sunday. I am not sure he will live to see the Superbowl.

The hospital provided him with earphones for his Walkman. He has a supply of tapes. His sense of humor remains and at least one nurse takes notes so she remembers the lines when she gets home.

Some of you have asked for an address:

Maine Medical Center
22 Bramhall St.
Portland, ME 04102

His room changes so just put Kendall Morse and he will get it.

I tried to bring (take?) a large helium balloon shaped like a whale (3' of Blue Whale) but I stepped on the ribbon and it took off over South Portland. Big as it is, it will probably set off alarms at Portland Jetport. Kendall had to settle for the weight. It's the thought that counts.

Great work, Sins -- now we're in for all kinds of stories about blue whales flying in from outer space. Whitly Streiber will take up residence in Portland and become an expert and do talk shows. Souvenir stands will pop up all over and telescope sales will soar like wildfire.   The Skipper gets out of the hospital and he won't recognize the old place with all the uproar about flying blue whales. Just don't tell him you started it!!

LMAO.....Sins, you gave me a real belly laugh with the whale!!! Sitcom material.....I have this great mental image of it happening. Now if the FAA shows up at your door, it will be perfect!!!!

Hanging stuff on his chair? Yeah....When Karen was in for the month long stay she started putting things the boys brought her on her IV rollaround. After awhile it became an attraction......"Got anything new today?"....."Oh, I love that thing with the pine cone." I had given her a really neat looking bear and he ended up riding on the top. One of the nurses actually took a picture!

I'm sure the hospital staff is enjoying Kendall. 99% of their patients are more like his roomie or just pains in the ass. If you're different, weird, funny, whatever, I think it lightens their day (or night). AND....you always seem to get the special stuff!!!

Here's another hospital trick I learned when Judy had her heart bi-pass surgery. On the second day of her hospital stay, I brought the most expensive, decadent, gooey chocolate cake that money could buy. I delivered it to the nurses break room at five in the morning, with a note that said, "Judy in bed 801-2 says thank you for all the great service."

It was amazing, the service she got. Nurses would come in, in the quiet of the night and give her foot massages. ANYTHING she wanted was there instantly. It almost got to be embarrasing. Bob

My mom was in for surgery (gall-bladder, after the pancreatitis calmed down) and her roommate gave her a big bear to sleep with. It was wonderfully comforting (in lieu of the pet cat, etc.) and did help with coughing and soothing some pain. Mom went home and bought herself a nice big bear that she named "Nancy" after that roommate. And in her will she actually left the bear to a friend's cat (the cat would visit when her mistress was travelling, and would curl up on the bear).

While a bear might not sit well with Kendall they have large stuffed EVERYTHINGs these days--we have a couple of orcas. Find him a stuffed blue whale for during the night he needs something pillow-like to put a little extra pressure over a sore spot. Or just give him a nice pillow.

For me being in the hospital and having surgery after surgery (after surgery) after surgery was the closest thing I ever had in 40 years as a folksinger to a paid vacation. I came to see the various hospitals pretty much as sadistic spas. Kendall, I do hope you have vacation insurance !! But watch out for those damn pre-existing vacations. The damn insurance guys won't pay for those. Yeah, I know they're wrong---but what can a fellow do??

Push that button and get all the drugs you can pump into yourself. After surgery, it's perfectly legal !!!!!!!

Imminent surgery did not prevent him from making a couple of choice comments about Resident Bush...

Ye Gads, Mon!

Just got home from an old Girlfriend's funeral up in NH (she was a Career Educator and Artist; 53 - Cancer), and check in on the ol' Cat after an absence of some time... and gadzooks already!

As I lingered in the Church sanctuary this afternoon after the standing-room-in-the-back packed-out services (the same Church I used to attend on occasion with my Parents some 40 years ago) and noticed the urn in between the flowers on the altar, Kendall's rendition of "Ashes on the Sea" came to mind rather strongly, and was poigiantly descriptive of my feelings at the moment.

Although thankfully this latest Kendall-Drama seems to be on a positive course, and the prognosis looks good, the prayers of this conservative Yankee Baptist will be with the good Captain Monday Morning, to be sure.

A week ago Saturday Aunt Mah'thah & me and Sister-In-Law Kathi went up to see Fred & Julia in a Robert Burns commemerative concert in Brunswick, backed up by another very talented couple whose names I have forgotten already.

Met Jets up there and inquired of Friend Kendall, and he brought me up to speed on the planned trip to Ye Auld Countyerie. Hope that it will still be a "go" and that a grand time is had by all.

You can be friends with a one-'l' beast
Lemur brother, leopard mama
But they ain't the best, cuz at the very least
You can go two-'l' with a llama

He's gonna get a dolly llama
Cause he's heard they're all the rage
For a cough in the night, he can hold it tight
Right up to his rib cage 2, 3, ... Ohhhhhhh,
He's gonna get a dolly llama
To keep his guts inside
When a breeze makes him sneeze, pass the llama, if you please
And he can hang on for the ride

Perhaps it might be best if he didn't read that for a couple of weeks...

Good news from Kendall's daughter, Deb.
He is in recovery. The surgery went quicker than expected. I think she said 2 1/2 hours. The shorter the edposure to anesthesia the better. He is still incubated(?) but they will remove the gadget within the hour because HE IS COMPLAINING!

Kendall will spend the night in recovery/ICU and be back on the first floor tomorrow PM. No complications are expected but there is always the possibility of bleeding, infection, or adverse anesthesia reaction.

I will visit him tomorrow. It may be best to hold off on the phone calls for a few days while he gets adjusted to the pain and routine.

Intubated.
You can't talk when you're intubated. This must be very hard for Kendall, woozie-headed from being hypothermolated and anesthetized or not. One can only imagine the form these non-verbal complaints are taking. That was a SHORT bypass, and I hope it means there wasn't much to do! Thanks to SINSULL and Deb.

This is excellent news! If they're talking about removing the breathing tube that quickly it means he's breathing well enough on his own already - astounding considering what he's been through. Yay for Kendall!

Incidentally - you also can't talk when you're incubated. Or at least I've never met anyone who managed it.

Kendall, my dear, you probably won't read this for a bit, but we are sending good thoughts your way. My mom is going strong 14 years after triple-bypass surgery, and of course there have been great improvements since then. Short surgery time is an excellent sign; heal quickly, now, and don't be too tough on your nurses!

For those of you who have never been on a vent (intubed with a ventilator which does the breathing for you)..........I have no way of describing it. The best thing you can do and the hardest thing to do is relax and trust it. The more you try to breathe, the more you cannot.....you're fighting the machine. It's as if you were drowning. You feel as if you need to breathe to get air, but you don't. But since you're not doing the normal thing you think you are not getting air so you gasp.....it's very strange. The best thing to do is just lay there and hope for drugs to keep you out of it so you aren't fighting the damn thing. After awhile you get used to it but it's still very scary every time you wake up. I've had this experience 3 times now and if I never have it again it will be too soon. It doesn't hurt when they remove it....just a bit of the gag reflex to help it along and out it comes.

My worst experience was back with the aneurysm (aortic dissection) when I was on one for about 10 days. Most of the time I was either in a coma or deep on drugs, but I had to put up with almost three days of being awake and on the vent. When they finally removed it, I was hoarse for several days.

Now that it's over.....Great!!!! Get better real fast Kendall and do all the things on the list. Hopefully all went well and your heart will now have to heal around the new arteries (about 2 weeks) and then get used to operating as it probably hasn't in several years. For that to happen, providing everything else is okay, you need to follow a rehab program and don't try to skip out on it. It's worth it if you can do it.

Also, like you, I had my chest cracked for the bypass, but in '02 when I had to have the mitral valve replaced, I thought I would have to do it again. Luckily, one of the best cutters in the US is at Ohio State and he was doing the testing on the daVinci Robot. Try not to let this depress you, but they now do ALL bypasses at OSU without opening your chest!!! Two small pencil sized holes and that's it! You're out of the hospital in two days and there is no pain from the surgery! Ain't that a pisser? Sorry man......

For me, I was the second patient to have a valve replaced robotically. Again, the two pencil holes for the arms of the robot plus a small incision to pass the valve in to the robot arms and that was it. After the post op (vent of course), I was feeling good right away because the really didn't do anything besides make a small incision....No Chest Cracking!!!! That was glorious! It was a little painful to raise my arm, but compared to the chest bit you get when they saw your sternum, it was nothing at all.

Hold onto your pillow and try not to sneeze and it will eventually go away. It takes a few weeks for the chest to feel much like normal again and you may always have a numb sensation in certain places. Groan a lot and show people your scar and get the max in pity while you can......after awhile they'll realize you're fakin' it. But at first, you won't be so get all the sympathy you can......not from me of course. No, when you think of me, remember I'm the guy who told you that it could have been completely painlessly!!!
.....**yarharharharyarharharharyarharhar**..... (evil laugh)

We love ya' Kendall.....and stay away from the Llahma for a few weeks...

Spaw

Kendall, Spaw reminded me of something. The scar.

My brother, the one who had nine bypasses, shows off his scar and tells everyone who will listen that he got it when he was bayoneted while trying to save a sweet old nun from the clutches of a gang of drug crazed biker thugs.

If he can come up with THAT, I'm sure you can think up something.

They make some pretty good stuff for treating scars now. Mederma is one of them, kind of expensive, but it works. It's an old fashioned recipe, actually--the main ingredient is onion. My plastic surgeon (who treated a serious cat bite on my leg) said I could probably eat an onion a day and get the same level of scar reduction. It's much easier out of a tube, even if you like onions!

Kendall is back on Floor 1 and doing amazingly well. I visited him today. He is tired (DOH!) but in good form and humor. I suppose the morphine helps. He ate breakfast and lunch. A somewhat amazing feat since he, Deb, and I all looked at each other wondering who was the guilty party when the tray was brought in. It smelled that bad.

He needs lots of rest. And some sympathy when he hiccups. But he will be home and fine by the weekend.

Glad it all went well Kendall. Sounds like hospital food is about the same over there as it is over here. I'm sure it's a plot to make people get better fast so they can get home for a decent meal!

One tip - if you're going to be looked after by your daughter when you come out let her behave as if she's your MOTHER for for while. If she's anything like mine she's probably been scared stiff of what was happening and, unlike you, didn't have anything else (like a major operation) to keep her mind occupied. She will probably have a need to get things somewhat under control and that will mainly be you! It will probably do you good anyway.

All good thoughts coming from this direction. Get well soon.

Thanks for the good news, Mary. Talked with Kendall on Sunday. Told him to hug the damned pillow like crazy if he felt a cough coming on, just as Spaw advises. Fortunately, Kendall quit smoking a long time ago, so the tendency to cough may be less for him than it was for me. I didn't quit smoking until I went to the hospital for the bypass.
Anybody remember the Far Side cartoon of the surgeons huddled around the operating table. One of them says something like "Are you satisfied with your grip, Worthington? I am with mine. HAVE YOU MADE YOUR WISH?" It was on the bulletin board in the recovery room when I woke up. I brought it home and framed it.
So, Kendall, if you can't hug your pillow. Call for a nurse!

According to the news this Morning, our very own Governor of Maine, Gov. John BALDACCI, and his State Police Driver / Bodyguard are spending the night at ME. medical Center tonight after smacking another vehicle and rolling over off the interstate 295 and into the thule-whacks in Bowdoinham in their State SUV.

Although their injuries are described as "non-life-threatening", I guess they got banged up considerably. The occupants of the other vehicle involved apparantly were unhurt.

Even though I didn't vote for the Governor, I hope and pray for his speedy and complete recovery, as well as for his SP Detective escort.

Since it has been demonstrated in all sorts of studies that laughter can be very therapeautic, perhaps they could put the Gov. in the same room with Kendall.

They ought to get along famously, and no doubt the Gov's. healing would be facilitated greatly by the spirit-lifting mirth which we all know the Cpt. is so capable of engendering.

Sort of like a "Communal Healing Environment", eh?

What does ye think?

Oh; By the way - as to huggable stuffed animals;

Do ye think that a sheep might be just a bit too obvious? };^{)~

UPDATE:
Kendall is doing well but is exhausted. His roommate won't have surgery until next Monday. He and his daughter plus another female make more noise than I believed possible. Nothing is moved without a bang and a bonk and a barrage of shrill advice. The gentleman performs similar feats everytime he visits the resttroom. And he doesn't wash his hands.

The "girls" are like Cinderella's ugly sisters with brain damage. Now picture this - Dad is OK and capable of getting around. He is bitching about the food and keeps a journal documenting his calorie intake. He complains to anyone who will listen that he is not getting enough food. "I've lost 3 lbs. since Sunday."
The lasdies read the newspapers to him including the ads. Did you know that the Dollar Store sells window cleaner at $1.50/bottle? She then proceeded to work out the price per oz. SIGH Four hours of this nonsense.

And Captain Morse looked as if his blood pressure was going through the roof. Everytime he went into a semi-sleep, one of them would shriek out an article to Dad.Dad kept trying to open the curtain between their beds so they could chat. I wordlessly shook my head "No". I do believe I offended them.

Anyway...the good news: besides numerous aches and pains Kendall is recovering nicely and may be sent home tomorrow. He asked me to read all the messages that arrived since Monday. There were a bunch! His daughter was very touched by all the attention. Utah Phillips tracked him down and chatted with him - that perked him up. And he opened his care package from Tinker. Spotted Dick got a laugh but the wind-up train was his favorite.

He is able to get out of bed and walk to the restroom on his own. He does wash his hands. I listened. He is walking with help 3-4 times a day.

I would limit the phone calls for a while. He desperately needs to sleep. But all is well and I am sure he will recover in plenty of time for his trip to England.

Oh yeah - a hospital person walked in, went up to his bed, and kissed him. I was dumbfounded and said "Did that woman just kiss you?" turned out it was a friend of the family checking. Spaw would be jealous - there is a cute little girl named Kelly with a blond ponytail who winks and flirts and adores him. Kendall hasn't lost his sense of humor or his eye for the ladies.

Hey now! They're just taking advantage of his helplessness. Make them behave, Sins! Holly will be jealous. She wanted to know if we could go to the hospital to visit him. Wish we could!!

I'm so relieved. Sounds like everything's gonna be just fine.

Now the question is, how is he FEELING?

He feels like crap. But that is a good sign. The painkillers are wearing off and he is getting fed up with his surroundings.

Dopey sister #1 couldn't dial an 800 number because it had too many numbers in it. 2 was susidizing Dad's low fat/low cal diet with Eskimo Bars and Ice Cream Sandwiches. Maybe he has money and they are trying to get rid of him. Just wish they would do it quietly.

A hospital is not the place to hang around if you want any undisturbed sleep! Even in the middle of the night, here comes someone wanting blood.

Thanks for standing guard, Sinsull! It's awfully hard to be polite or tolerant about the roommate foolishness when you're feeling well, let alone when you feel like crap.

I also must confess that despite Morti's assurance that Spotted Dick is very tasty, I'm waiting for the Captain's opinion.

I hope Kendall realizes what a fine person he has attracted to his side and that he gives you the appreciation you deserve. And I mean this, sincerely! I see all the support, friendship, love, and respect you have given him and I admire and respect YOU for it. Keep up the good work. So, Kendall--getting out of jail maybe? We hope you had a nice vacation! All that R&R! All that good food! All that quiet! & . . .   Noise? . . . in a hospital? In the wee hours? As I was sitting with an elderly friend in the hospital at a couple of clocks in the weeAM the other night/morn, we were watching the sci-fi channel & she said "What is that noise?" I looked out in the hall, & told her "It's just the Zamboni doing the floors." She knew exactly what I was referring to! The floor polisher.
Next night, after the "Zamboni" went by-- while watching the sci-fi channel yet again, at about 02:30ish A.M.-- a sound erupted as if the Keystone Cops were giving chase. "What in the world is going on now?" she inquired. I was about to stick my nose out in the hall to inquire of a passing staff member when about 3 of them descended upon the room we were in--there was a fire drill, & darned if they didn't come in & find the "fire"--a piece of red paper in my friend's wastebasket! It must be the sci-fi channel that attracts the noise & excitement. Or else Musicians.

First: Kendall is on his way home! Daughter #1 is with him at the hospital. #s 2 & 3 are at his house cleaning and at the grocery store stocking up. And of course it is snowing - first snow since December. Add to that, Kendall's roof is leaking apparently all over his stereo equipment. This should be fun.

Second: I am a bitch on wheels who overcompensates by being nice to people. Kendall gets as good as he gives. Thank you for the paean, harpy, but Mother Theresa, I am not. Can't let people think I am easy. On the other hand, if I am your friend, there is nothing I will not do for you. Kendall has been the most supportive friend I could have hoped to have found. Picking up my life and moving it to Maine has not been easy but I wanted it. Kendall made it possible. Plus he's handy with a power screwdriver.

Isn't this the time of year when "ice dams" cause oddly placed leaks? Is there any snow on the roof that someone is going to get out to eliminate with some bizarre New Englander contortions with panty hose and rock salt? Let me lean back and imagine this task--sounds like a good job for a daughter or a son-in-law!

Good luck rescuing the electronic equipment from whatever the source of the leak--Kendall's likely going to need it while he's stuck close to home for a while.

Mend quickly, Kendall!

open mike, a couple of years ago some of the folks in the Northeast were talking about how ice dams build up on roofs, and when conditions are right, they allow water to back up behind them, in an uphill move, getting under the shingles. It's something that is cured by getting the ice off of the roof, and someone was talking about using rock salt in panty hose. Throw it up on the roof where it sits in the groove where the ice is and the salt will melt the ice, clearing out the dam.

Kendall, I'm pleased to see you online as brief as your appearance was today. We've never met, but I've followed enough stories and threads to know you're a keeper! Rest up and get well quickly.

Actually, Miss Phiddle, Kendall is under doctor's orders to exercise every day by walking. Since it is way too icy outside, he paces back and forth between the kitchen through the living room and into his bedroom going "Quack quack" like a duck in a shooting gallery. Every once in a while he about faces twice squawking as he goes just for the fun of it.
Eventually one of us will take a pot shot at him and he will start running. Not for at least a week.

Actually Doug, I don't have to chase them. They feel sorry for me, so I just look pitiful and it brings out their mother instinct!
I do wish my daughter hadn't hidden my salt shaker...

It's probably a good thing she has. Just remember you're supposed to be recovering for the UK not putting yourself back in the same position as you were before.

If you don't behave they won't let you in the Mudcat Recovery Ward!!!

Here's a smile for you, Kendall.

I've got one of those little plastic wind-up penguins. You let it go and it waddlewaaddlewaddles while it clicks. The other day Holly was playing with it, while at the same time her dad was giving her directions: "so clean up your room, wash and brush, and get your school stuff together. Can you do that?"

She tuned in on "Can you do that?", having missed the previous orders. Without missing a beat, she started waddling like a penguin around the room.

Kendall:

I have a friend, old enough to be your father, who called and said he was sorry he didn't cut up that oak tree I cut down for him this weekend. He didn't realize he would have so much trouble starting his chainsaw but did indeed have trouble because of that operation a couple of years ago on his shoulder. So, he tells me, he put the saw in the vice on his workbench, gave it a shot of starter fluid, got it running, put it in the trunk of his Buick, and the damn thing stopped running on the drive over.

Is there a moral to this?

Annie

Kendall,

Once again you've shown the ladies what's the best way to a man's heart! Food ain't it, is it?

As for a hobby, you ought to get a scanner and send off all your photos from the folk adventures and sea years via e-mail to everyone you know. If these long symathetic (and, yes, loving) threads get to you and use up all your energy and spare time, sending those photos out will bug everyone so much that your thread'll only have 5 or 6 posts at most and will load faster than any photo ever did.

Glad you're doing well, sir. Keep on keepin' on with that!!

Art

I was very impressed with the beauty of Maine when my wife and I were there in October. Spending time with Kendall and Sinsull, singing songs and learning how to put lobsters into a trance before scalding them will remain a highlight of our vacation. I've even thought about moving to Maine after retirement and trying my songs out on the East Coast, but "Maine Mike" doesn't have the right sound. Tawmmie and I are very glad you are back home and on the mend Kendall.

By the way, did you hear about the lady who looked out her back door one day to see an elephant tearing up her garden. She had never seen an elephant before and so immediately dialed 911 and told the dispatcher that some great unknown beast was tearing out her cabbages with its tail. "What is the animal doing with the cabbages?", inquired the dispatcher. "Oh," replied the lady, "You're not even going to believe this....."

Best wishes,
ALASKA Mike

Did you know you're supposed to turn your mattress every month or two? Treat it like (assuming it is at least a full mattress) there are four positions on which you would sleep, and trade them out? Turn it around, and turn it over, and turn it around again. . . it says to do this on the label. In case the label DIDN'T say this, I don't suppose you kept the label to prove this, did you?

Just between us, the best mattress for your back is that new "swedish" Tempurpedic high-density foam thingy -- we got one for Xmas and we love it. To save the expense of a whole mattress you can get just a topper which lies atop a regular mattress.   It is puredee good stuff.

I guess I've been lucky. I bought a very cheap bed when I moved house nearly five years ago and kept the mattress when I got a better bedstead. It's still going strong with no problems and is one of the most comfortable I've had.

I looked at those Tempera things but the problem is when you're not sleeping at home, as is quite regularly the case for me, any other bed can be very uncomfortable in comparison. I found this when I had a waterbed.

Anyway Kendall, what HAVE you been doing to make such a depression in your mattress? The mind boggles!

I'm not a heavy guy, 13 stone, so, there is no reason for this thing to collapse like this except poor materials or design.

Kendall, you must be feeling a lot better! People are yanking your chain and getting as good as they give. ;-)

You've more than fulfilled your end of the bargain* with turning the mattress. None of the mattresses here are particularly expensive, and yet none of them is showing the kind of depression that you describe, and all but the one (described in the other mattress thread) are several years older than yours.

*Though you will note that I am making certain generous assumptions about how often you change your sheets!

A couple were on their honeymoon, lying in bed, ready to consummate their marriage, when the new bride says to the husband, "I have a confession to make, I'm not a virgin."

The husband replies, "That's no big thing in this day and age."

The wife continues, "Yeah, I've been with one guy."

"Oh yeah? Who was the guy?"

"Tiger Woods."

"Tiger Woods the golfer?"

"Yeah."

"Well he's rich, famous and handsome. I can see why you went to bed with him."

The husband and wife then make passionate love. When they finish, the husband gets up and walks to the telephone.

"What are you doing?" asks his wife.

The husband says, "I'm hungry, I was going to call room service and get some food."

"Tiger wouldn't do that!" she claims.

"Oh yeah? What would Tiger do?"

"He'd come back to bed and do it a second time."

The husband puts down the phone and goes back to bed to make love with his wife a second time. When they finish, he gets up and goes over to the phone.

"What are you doing?" she asks.

The husband says, "I'm still hungry so I was going to call room service to get some food."

"Tiger wouldn't do that," again she claims.

"Oh yeah? What would Tiger do?"

"He'd come back to bed and do it a third time."

The guy slams down the phone and goes back to bed and makes love to his wife a third time. When they finish he's tired and beat. He drags himself over to the phone and starts to dial.

The wife asks, "Are you calling room service?"

"No! I'm calling Tiger Woods to find out what's par for this damn hole!"

Ya' know, I been readin' this thing right along ever since the mattress came up and I just finally have to ask something.......

Uh, Kendall...You had heart surgery not brain surgery....right? Did you know that being on a heart/lung machine affects the brain? True.....not a joke. It can adversely affect memory functions as well as reasoning skills. I'm not kidding here! It's one of the possible side effects of heart surgery. Now it doesn't happen to everyone as I've been on one 3 times with no ill effects, but it does happen to some........and I think you're a strong possibility here! I mean, like, uh, Kendall.......well..........Lookit here Buddy, you ain't quite right.

Lemmee get this right.........You have this sensual, sensuous, beautiful, intelligent, and lovely woman that you have somehow, unbelievable and inconceivable as it seems to me, managed to lure into your bedroom. You have also somehow managed to have on hand a length of rope and a yardstick. And the best you can think of to do is to measure the fuckin' mattress???

Talk to your Docs...........

Spaw
