I `ad that Kate Rusby in my cab the other night,( in the taxiing sense of the word, you unnerstand). She was singing "When Jones`s Ale Was New". I said that`s not your normal stuff. You normally do all them sad, mournful songs. She said you never tasted Jones`s ale when it was new!
What am I like?.

erm...I *was* talking about the indigenous, traditional music heritage of the people of the British Isles, an output which might reasonably be expected from a national broadcasting network rather than a hybrid, sub-Nashville hotch-potch dictated by a bunch of accountants who wouldn't recognise a Child ballad or a morris processional even if it mowed them down during their very much 'inside the box' planning meetings.

Cittern, maybe it's time we started bombarding the BBC with requests for some of Julie's stuff? She's got more talent in her little finger than ANY of the people you hear on Radio 1, and most of those on Radio 2, have in their entire bodies.

Not sure I agree completely countess richard.

Bob Harris still does a cracking job on his general Saturday show as well as the country show.

Just think what life would be like without Harris & Kershaw!

The local shows like Radio Derby's "Folk Waves", BCB Radio's "Mixed Bag" and "Folk Us" also make the world a better place, along with several others who's names excape me (but can be found on the "listen again" playlist.

John, Guest and others - sorry if I misunderstood your postings, I do agree that talent should always take precedence over physical beauty and I guess I'm nervous that Kate might be getting all this National Radio and TV exposure more because the media moguls view her as eye-candy than because of their recognition of her considerable talent (Look at the cretinous 'Pop Idol' shows where looks and image are paramount - I'd hate to see the same stupid values translating themselves into the world of folk).

I'm nervous too that we may be seeing something of this strange British phenomenon where we worship unknowns, turn them into stars and then kick seven bells out of them until they're back where they started - admittedly it's not something you see in the folk world, but then you don't see that many folk artistes truly hitting the Big-Time!

Again, sorry guys if I got unnecessarily stroppy. I'll read more carefully in future!
All the Best,
Johnny

PS: If 'Eliza C' is THE Eliza C, what a nice gesture and how typical of the nice people in Folk. Good on yer girl!

Strollin Johnny, I don't see the Hogmany thread in the same way as you but there again I was one of the critics. As it was the first time I had heard her, I found many of the comments which to you would have seemed negative as being constructive. If she had only recieved priase for that performance, I would have simply decided she is not to my tastes. As it turned out, I now know she tends to be better when she can work with people and that my hearing was a below par performance. The end result of that thread for me is that I am actualy more, not less, inclined to give her another listen sometime.

I think you took Giok out of context. I'd agree with him that in the more commercial world that sadly good looks do tend to be an advantage. I think that one good thing we have in the folk world is that although we may appreciate a person's beauty (or at least from my viewpoint - there are people out there I fancy!), I believe we do try to judge our enjoyment of music with our ears, not our eyes and are less subjected to the marketing forces and what they consider will help in promotion.

Back more on topic... I would echo Eliza C in "Good on her. Hope it does her well". I'd doubt than any poster to this thread feels otherwise.

Jon

I woke slowly from my slumber at 7.45am this morning, Kate Rusby singing gently at my side. 'Go gently' did she sigh? The broad smile on my face faded momentarily as reality kicked in. It was only my clock-radio alarm (set on Radio Two). In a hazy dream afterward, breakfast was delicious. Had I really just woken 'Underneath the Stars' with Kate Rusby – thanks Radio Two, more please? (Apologies to John!) HFA

It's being played on more than Wogan. I heard it on Mo Dutta's show not more than an hour or so ago this morning. I also heard it yesterday, and not just on Wogan, but the day was such a blur I can't remember if it was with just Wogan, or with Stuart McOnie or Ken Bruce as well - or not. As if it matters, really - she's on the playlist!

I dont know who lambasted her for being pretty, that is not a crime in my book. I did however criticise [by implication] the cult of beauty over talent that persists in most pop cultures. I can only point out that there are people as good as, or better then Kate Rusby in her musical field, but because she is pretty she will get air time, and they won't. Not her fault before anyone jumps on that comment, and accuses me of disapproving of her looks.

Hi Ed,

There is no link - I would have put one in otherwise. I may have inadvertently mislead you when I said "big feature" the bulk of it was a photograph. It may be that it takes a while to get the stuff archived. All it said was that "Underneath the Stars" had been put on this week's Radio 2 playlist.

I am not sure how things get chosen Some people employ song pluggers. (I believe Jim Moray did for example). But Kate has achieved a very high profile without one as far as I know. And well deserved IMHO.

I do like Kate, but agree with Guest that it didn't fit the show. However, whether that came across in the same way to the General Public as it did to us sophisticated types, I dunno. If it gets her more attention and hence some extra gigs/dosh.....

They say no publicity is bad publicity. If you're in the entertainment business, anyway.

Talking about Hogmany Live I watched that show (sad aint I) and she was embarrasingly out of her element. She sang a completely out of mood song and was clearly the worst performer on the show.

Some like her and some don't but she should have thought long and hard before doing that show.

The lass can't do raight for doin' wrong! Lambasted in a recent thread for an appearance on 'Hogmanay Live' which was technologically out of her control, now lambasted again by some for being pretty and having the brass neck to be played by Wogan!

Count me wi' them above who are on her side. She's a great ambassador for folk and an encouragement to other young people to get involved, she's talented, she has a wonderful personality and yes, dammit, she's GORGEOUS! That makes a bloody winner in my book.

There's no law against having beauty AND talent (or are the Folk Nazis working on that one too?).

It wuld help if some of the "high calibre" folk artists were as pretty too. The pop charts are in the main made up of so called beautiful people, and glitches like Michell McManus, and Alf are soon swamped in the media preference for female pulchritude.

Well let's face it, the Togmeister practically single handedly got Eva Cassidy the wider recognition she has now, because I for one would never have heard of her if I weren't a Tog.

He's doing the same now for another artist, whose name temporarily escapes me (possibly Katie Melua) and this morning he credited his assistant Paul Walters for introducing him to both her and Eva.

Log on to the Radio 2 website http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/wogan/ and have a look. Better still, ask him to play Kate Rusby again! He has been known to play 'Show of Hands' as well. He does rather take the mickey but sometimes he's deadly serious. For Wogan to say something is quite nice, means it stands a fair chance of getting played again!

I think part of the problems is the inverted snobbery that surrounds the folk world. Some performers want to keep music live, but need to sell CDs to survive. They won't send free CDs to radio stations because they want the income, but they won't get the income unless people know who they are. A radio station will reach thousands of people at one time, rather than the few hundreds (and frequently the same few hundreds) that go to festivals or clubs.

See the circular nature of the problem?
