Welcome back, our own dear goddess! Better to get this in late than not at all.
Remember Jennie Jenkins?

Will they go red
Will they go red, oh my dear, oh my dear
Will the sheep go red, Charlie Brayley?
Oh they might go red
With stripes across their head

When I paint them a barber-poley, holy moley
Foil-a-kitty, make-'em pretty
Show, Brayley's sheep art show

Will they go white, oh my dear, oh my dear
Will the sheep go white, Charlie Brayley?
Oh they can't go white
They'd be visible at night

When I paint them a barber-poley, holy moley
Foil-a-kitty, make-'em pretty
Show, Brayley's sheep art show

Will they go blue, oh my dear, oh my dear
Will the sheep go blue, Charlie Brayley?
Oh they might go blue
From their belly to their shoes

When I paint them a barber-poley, holy moley
Foil-a-kitty, make-'em pretty
Show, Brayley's sheep art show

Will they go green, oh my dear, oh my dear
Will the sheep go green, Charlie Brayley?
Oh they might go green
To their ears and in between

When I paint them a barber-poley, holy moley
Foil-a-kitty, make-'em pretty
Starve-the-leopard, salt-and-peppered,
Hue-enhancer, anti-panther
Show, Brayley's sheep art show

I wonder that their aren't more people participating in this. They sure are missing out :).

Here's the bit I promised.

To the tune of Johnny Cope.
Any help in scotifying it appropriately appreciated.

They sent a letter up through Ayre
"The Hightlands are a Panther Lair"
And mutton is their favourite fare
Its best you take this warning.

Ms Brayley lookt this letter upon
She drew her paints an stencils on
Swore, I'll not loose a single one
Its best I heed this warning.

Hey little sheep you're an awful sight
In purple, green, and red and white
The Panther will run, from you in fright
Why, he won't stop till morning.

Ms Brayley be'en as good as her word
She Spyrographed th 'tire herd
E'en pain-ted her frichted bird
She chased frae its nest frae adorning

chrs

In Zebra stripes all painted gay
The bleeting sheep stand all the day
Like Heilan Men in braw array
'pon a battle's morning

Now big cats ye may take the news
'n leave off sheep and heilan coos
For all our farms are pink and blues
We've none for you this morning

chrs

From cross the sea to Prestonpans
The come with guides and tourist vans
"These are the sheep of the heilan clans"
You'll see their plaids this morning.

chrs X2

(Slowly and with feeling)

Glaswegians swear from far and wide
Ms Brayley's their artistic pride
Paints on Vellum what hasn't died
Quite a sight this morning!

Sigurd

Is there enough noteriety of this story in Glasgow that some of these songs might be sung out there? I have a new wee contribution I'd love to think escaped the internet.

Thanks Amos,

You are of course right about the Bizarre slip up my only defence is it was 1am....

I'm always frustrated by the whole tune for Teddy Bears picnic. I can't make the second and third verses scan in my head. We're getting a fair number of songs here (I think I have one still coming). I hope someone is going to sing this near the site of the story.

I especially like McGrath, Cuilionn and your own entry. I feel like there needs to be more story here. Your view from the cats perspective really helps.

While shepherds splashed their flocks by night
All yellow pink and blue
The carnivores said "What a bore,
Boys this will never do!"

And so they ate the stockmen bold
Which proved a tasty feast
And now they stick to shepherd pie
And shun the woolly beast.

Sheepikins Picnic
Being a dissertation for the protection and self expression of gnostic rhomboid geometric ovis aries
tune: Aw you know...

If you're a sheep up in Ayre today
You're in for a big surprise
Don't fall asleep up in Ayre today
You'd better be in disguise

For Ewe or Ram new little lamb
Is scared to death they're gonna be spam
Because they say the Highlands has got a Panther!

Lots of little Sheepikins,
Don't wanna be Kitty Dins
They're seeking a way to hide today.
See them in the spray paint bins,
They're wearing sheepish grins
And picking up colours dull and gay

And Painted, like a wizard hat
They hide themselves from mister cat
Bazaar little Sheepikins....

(repeat last verse final lines fading to nothing)

And Painted, like a wizard hat
They hide themselves from mister cat
Bazaar little Sheepikins..
Tri-pping out little Sheepikins...
Must be on drugs, little Sheepikins.....

The purple-headed lambkins,
All red and green behind,

And make them colour blind.

All things bright and beautiful,
all creatures small, and great,
all things wise and wonderful,

Charlotte had a little lamb,
Little lamb, little lamb
Charlotte had a little lamb
She feared it would get et.

She painted it in stripes one day
Stripes one day, stripes on day
She painted it in stripes on day
So cats would stay away

To the cats it still smelled mighty good
Mighty good, mighty good
To cats it still smelled mighty good
In fact it smelled like food.

They didn't care for stripes or dots
Stripes or dots, stripes or dot
They didn't care for stripes or dots
But lamb sure hit the spot!

Sort of to the tune of 'Sam the Skull':

The Dalry Cat

I'm a cat, I'm a cat, I'm a Dalry cat

And I roam o'er valley and hill

I've a lust and a thirst for to do my worst

Determined for to kill

I'm no the kind of cat that sat on the mat

As a pet, I'm no to keep

I'm wild, and I'm free, nothing worries me

But I worry the occasional sheep.

Up on the moors round Dalry way

I was hunting the other night

Sniffed a flock of ewes, that was sure good news

I was hungry and fancied a bite

But before my eyes, they were in disguise

Green and purple and blue

I'd never seen punk sheep, not even in my sleep

So I rounded up a few

I don't eat blue food, it never tastes too good

And deep purple is a colour that I hate

But a hungry cat likes sheep plump and fat

His appetite for to sate

So what's a cat to do? I'll give you a clue

It's not as difficult as it seems

The answer's very nice; I took my mother's advice

She said 'Always eat your greens'!

I'm a cat, I'm a cat, I'm a Dalry cat

And I roam o'er valley and hill

I'd a lust, and a thirst, and I did my worst

Now I've fully eaten my fill

I'm a cat, I'm a cat, I'm a Dalry cat

And here's the missing link

I'm a cat, a special cat, I'm a panther cat –

A panther who is positively pink!

Little Lamb, who sprayed thee?
Dost thou know who sprayed thee?
Red, green and purple paint,
Fit to make a Tiger faint,
Made your clothing such a sight,
Like some flashing neon light,
Gave thee such a garish glare,
Making all the vales to stare?
    Little Lamb, who sprayed thee?
Dost thou know who sprayed thee?

Little Lamb, I'll tell thee,
It was Charlotte Brayley!
Heard about a fearful beast,
Roaming wild across the waste.
It might eat you some dark night,
So she sprayed you, fiery bright.
Now with tartan-coloured fleece
You can gambol here in peace.
Even though you're messy!
Little Lamb, God bless thee!
Little Lamb, God bless thee!

The Cat Came Back

Charlotte Brayley had troubles on the farm
She had a big black cat wouldn't leave her sheep alone;
She tried and he tried to keep the cat away,
She bought a sheep dog to keep the cat away.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, with dog hair in his teeth
But the cat came back; he just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

The man around the corner swore he'd kill the cat on sight,
He loaded up his shotgun with nails and dynamite;
He waited and he waited for the cat to come around,
Ninety seven pieces of the man is all they found.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, wearing an NRA cap
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

She noticed that her efforts were any thing but cheap,
The more she tried to kill the cat the more it killed her sheep;
She tried to hide her animals she camoflaged their fleece
It don't help the zebras so why will it help these?

But the cat will be back the very next day,
The cat'll come back, as soon as it gets hungry
But the cat'll come back; it just won't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

Áine was gone and we had no challenges,
Áine was gone we couldn't parody;
Now its all right and we're writing funny rhymes,
Where were ya girl? Its about time!.

But Áine came back after some time away,
Áine came back, we thought she was a goner
But Áine came back; she just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

Paint Me All Over Stripes Pink and Yellow

(Tune: Wrap Me Up In Me Tarpaulin Jacket)

(Note: In some parts of the Western United States the term "painter" is applied to moutain lions)

A loverly young ewe lay a gaspin'
Her eyes rollin round in her skull.
And she said while she shook like an aspen
"Keep yon painter out of my wool!"

CHO: Paint me all over stripes, pink and yellow
Let the painter give all she can feel.
For I'd rather be painted all over
Than end up some black painter's meal!

Now the young sheperd sweetly assured her,
"Be at peace! I am nobody's fool!
You will never be et by a painter
With barber-pole stripes in your wool!

Cho,

So with barber-pole stripes they adorned her
And she wandered the hills without care
And the black painter foiled and disgusted
Saw clearly that no sheep was there!

Cho.

So she thought she was safe, little ewe did,
And once more at peace she did feel,
Until one night the shepherdess tagged her
To be taken as next Sunday's meal!

Cho.

So they barbecued her free of worries
Never thinking it might be a sin--
She was never done in by the painter out there,
But done in by the painter within!

CHO: Paint me all over stripes, pink and yellow
Let the painter give all she can feel.
For I'd rather be painted all over
Than end up some black painter's meal!

She cast her artist's een aboon, wi racin mind an hairt,
An bent her will tae blendin crofter's skill an scholar's art.

Ring ding diddle diddle i de o

She bent her will tae blendin crofter's skill an scholar's art.

Ms. Brayley gaily tuik the paints she'd bocht in Glasgae-toon.
She plan'd a field study; sae a ram-blin she went roon...
Wi ane eye tae the wethers, an anither for the hues,
The crafty crofter doffed her hat an stairtit tintin ewes!

Ring ding diddle diddle i de o
Ring di diddle i o
The crafty crofter doffed her hat an tuik tae tintin ewes!

She pencilled in the ootlines, then she stencilit awa
Wi reds an greens an purple tae, the scheme wis luikin braw...
She kent the neebors thocht her mad, an sure, the toon wuid talk,
But artists maun brush up their skills, & paint--or pen--the flock.

Ring ding diddle diddle i de o

Artists maun brush up their skills an paint--or pen--their flocks.

The paint wis dry; the gloamin cam, when wildcats stairt their spree!
The panther creepit doon the brae, but sheep it cuidnae see
The rainbow-flock chewed blithely on, hame hungry cat did creep,
An Charlotte earned a passin grade, e'en tho her art was sheep!

Ring ding diddle diddle i de o
Ring di diddle i o
The Crofter-scholar made the grade, altho her art was sheep!

Welcome back.... i was afraid we would have to wait for the holy days for your appearance, and Midsummer being so far off, I thought perhaps Imbolc , but I see lambing time has begun a few days early. Must be the Texas sun... I'm going to have to think a bit. ( And I've got a few Kendall errands to run)... I'll be back.

The Green Mist gathered over the amazed crowd and, lo, there were 'Catter calls of joy and amazement at the appearance of . . .

Greetings from Song Challenge! Central – That's right 'Catters, TGG is back in the business of stirring your wee grey cells into imaginative producers of creative song! This is the fourth(!) year for the Song Challenge!, so if you're a newbie to this strange concept, check out the Song Challenge!s From The Past, The Song Challenge! Winners Page (for a glimpse of all the virtual 'awards' that you can receive), and/or The First Official Song Challenge. We want to blast those cobwebs out of your brain, and infect all Mudcatters with an uninhibited desire to write songs about anything and everything.

So, get out your crayons and TP and have a good bash at this Scottish tale of tails:

Babe Baffled By Bevy Of Bifurcated Baa-Baas – (Scotland) -- A Scottish farmer has spray painted her sheep in a bid to deter big cat attacks.

Charlotte Brayley made patterned stencils and then used red, green and purple paint on six of her animals. Striped camouflage, like that of a zebra, is said to confuse cats because the contrasting bold stripes break up the animal's shape.

There have been reports of a big cat near the farm outside Dalry in Ayrshire, says the Daily Record. In one incident a primary school in Renfrewshire was put on high alert after reported sightings of a panther and two weeks later there was a sighting of the beast in Johnstone, Renfrewshire.

Ms. Brayley, 21, said: 'I read about the recent sightings of a black leopard or panther in the area. These cats prey on sheep and there was no way I was going to allow any of mine to fall victim.'

'It only took about 15 minutes to paint each one and they were quite content to have it done. It doesn't matter that the colours are bright. It is the patterns that are important because cats only see in black and white.'

As well as helping out on the family farm, Ms. Brayley studies fine art and sculpture at Glasgow School of Art.

Go For It, Challenge!rs!!

All the best, Áine (a/k/a TGG)
