Hi, Keith - can you tell us anything more about the song - where you heard it, who sang it, snippets of lyrics, anything? The only mention I found was on this website of a group called "1937 Flood."
Thanks.

Let me get my tape of Howie Bursen doing it, and I'll copy the words off for you. Should be able to post the words within an hour.

This is a response to Joe's request for more information. It's kind of a rag/blues number. I know Roy Bookbinder has played it.

Subject: Lyr Add: I NEVER CRIED (from Howie Bursen)
From: Uncle_DaveO

I NEVER CRIED

Well, I never cried, till my baby got on...on that train,
And I never cried till my baby got on that train.
And the tears come down, Great God! like showers of rain.

Well, if you don't want me, baby, give me your...your right hand
And if you don't want me, darlin', give me your right hand.
I'll go back to my woman, you can go back to your man.

Well, if blues was whisky, I believe I'd lose.... lose my mind
And if blues was whisky, I believe I'd lose my mind.
Cause I'm worried and bothered, baby, drinkin' all the time.

I believe, I believe, I...I will quit my lowdown barrelhouse ways,
I believe, Good Lord, I will quit my barrelhouse ways.
Cause I feel myself, baby, sinkin' in my grave.

Well, I never cried, till my baby got on ... on that train,
And I never cried till my baby got on that train.
And the tears come down, Great God! like showers of rain.

(From the singing of Howie Bursen, Cider in the Kitchen tape,
1988, Folk Legacy Records, Inc., Sharon, Conn.)

'I never cried' arranged (and re-named) by John Miller from Blind Teddy Darby's 'Built Down Low To The Ground'
You can hear a soundclip of John Miller (from 1972 LP 'First Degree Blues'.- Blue Goose 2007) doing that song at http://www.wirz.de/music/miller/millfrm.htm
Other interpretations I know of:
Howie Bursen, Roy Bookbinder (1975 LP 'Git-Fiddle Shuffle'), Billy Goodman, Phil Heywood, Pat Donohue

Just completed transferring Howie Bursen's Folk-Legacy recording to CD format last night. It's now available.

I'm glad to hear that. Howie Bursen is wonderful, and that tape is great. I've played mine so much that it may give up the ghost any time.

I can recommend Cider in the Kitchen to anyone who wants to hear wonderful singing and guitar and banjo playing.

I would like to play this, I have H Bursen's vinyl recording of it. Any clues/links to the playing of it please?

Subject: Lyr Add: BUILT RIGHT ON THE GROUND (Teddy Darby)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 03 Aug 16 - 08:13 PM

BUILT RIGHT ON THE GROUND
As recorded by Blind Teddy Darby, 1931, Victor 23311.

I never cried till my babe got on a—on a train,
An' I never cried till my babe got on a train,
An' the tears run down, great God, like drops of rain.

An' just let me tell you what that mean ol' train will—train will do.
Now let me tell you what that mean ol' train will do:
It will take your woman and blow the smoke at you.

It's ah, my baby don't treat me good no—good no mo',
An' it's ah, my baby don't treat me good no mo',
An' I ain't got no babe; I ain't got nowhere to go.

Well the woman that I'm lovin', she don't pay me no—me no min',
And the woman I'm lovin' don't pay me no min',
And she keep me worried an' bothered all the time.

I believe, I believe I'll stop my barrelhouse—barrelhouse way,
An' I believe, I believe I'll stop my barrelhouse way.
For I feel myself sinkin' ev'ry day.

And it's, ah, my baby don't act right no mo',
An' I don't feel welcome, babe, nowhere I go.

If whiskey don't kill me, say, I'm doom to lose my—lose my min'.
If whiskey don't kill me, I'm doom to lose my min'.
I'm worried an' I'm bothered an' drinkin' all the time.

Farewell, farewell, I bid this world good—world goodbye.
Farewell, farewell I bid this world goodbye.
Little babe done quit me an' I givin' up to die.
