Subject: Tangos From: Alice Date: 22 Sep 98 - 03:20 PM I am looking for Tangos (sheet music, songbooks) with lyrics in either English or Spanish. I've found some websites with lyrics, but I am still looking for books I can get either through a library or bookstore. There are a few tangos in 'abc' on the web, also. Thanks for any referrals. alice in montana

I have a collection of Tangos arranged for Violin/Guitar, I got them from Caliendo Music Publishing, 10061 Riverside Drive, #242, Toluca Lake Cal. 91602. Or 1-888-tango42. But I can't recall off hand, ever hearing anyone SING a Tango. Frank i.t.s. |
Subject: RE: Tangos From: Alice Date: 27 Sep 98 - 11:28 AM Frank, check out the Tango lyrics sites at:

In the US, tangos are usually mixed into the genre "Torch Songs". I found one in a 1957 songbook called Torchy. The tango is 'Careless Lips (Tango Roulette)'. I also have a songbook of Latin American folk music that has a tango song (urban folk) in the section on Argentina, along with country dance songs. I am trying to put something together to sing with accordian accompanist. I like to dance the Tango, so I am trying to track down the sheet music or more songbooks.
Julio Iglesias, in his recording called "Tango" wrote this: "This album is dedicated to my parents. I believe I was born because of a Tango." alice in montana |

Subject: RE: Tangos From: John in Brisbane Date: 28 Sep 98 - 02:30 AM And please don't forget that classic in the DT "The Masochism Tango". I note that there is no tune for it in the DT. I do have a score for it somewhere - will look it up next week when I've finished travelling.

Subject: RE: Tangos From: Malena Date: 28 Sep 98 - 02:33 PM Hey Frank, don´t they sing tangos in the swamps? Singing is almost as important in Argentine tango as is playing. Carlos Gardel is a GOD in Argentina (I don´t like him too much personally). Whoever wants to visit a really nice Tango Website, try the Cueva de Krak (it´s in Spanish though). They have MIDI-files to download (some terrible, some really nice) and quite a lot of RealAudio Music. It´s a really beautiful site of Tango Adicionados. It´s at: www.geocities.com/Baja/3061/index.html Daniel |
Subject: RE: Tangos From: Alice Date: 28 Sep 98 - 04:24 PM Daniel, are you using two sign on names, danielmarsch@t-online.de, and Malena? I'm finding lots of lyrics... now I just have to track down the notation. Thanks for the additional links. alice |
Subject: RE: Tangos From: Barbara Date: 29 Sep 98 - 01:04 AM Berryman and Berryman have a funny - yes it is - Tango called Pushing Spring on their Double Yodel CD/tape. The gist of it being it's a serious mistake to get between a Minnesotan and her garden at the beginning of spring, even [especially?] if you have lust in your heart. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Tangos From: Alice Date: 29 Sep 98 - 10:09 AM My next area of searching is the Tango mailing list. If anyone knows of recordings of women singing tango songs, I'd appreciate the information. Thanks. alice |
Subject: RE: Tangos From: Malena Date: 29 Sep 98 - 04:33 PM Hi Alice, I just stepped into this page a few days ago and answered your thread with my email-adress (danielmarsch...), then learned how to become a member and I found out that the name Daniel was already taken, to I choose Malena (which is actually the name of a really beautiful tango), so Malena=Daniel, easy, eh? Singing Tango has always been a very male and macho thing, but there are some female singing recordings, I know some old ones, look f.i. for the names of Cecilia Gomez and Rosita Barrios. Good luck, Daniel (or should I say Malena?) PS: actually in this tango Malena is a woman how sings the tango like nobody does (Malena canta el tango, como ninguna), but then again, this song is sung by men... |
Subject: RE: Tangos From: Alice Date: 29 Sep 98 - 06:00 PM Thanks, Daniel. I began to see after searching that singing the Tango may be a male territory. I just asked the MIT Tango listserv for referrals to female recordings, so, considering there are hundreds of serious Tango professionals and fans on the list, it will be interesting to see what kind of responses I get.
Welcome to the Mudcat! I love your explanation of 'Malena'. alice in montana |

Subject: RE: Tangos From: Alice Date: 08 Apr 06 - 02:26 PM Ok, Ok, so I am reviving an old thread I started (that has the first part cut off), back in '98 when I was taking tango classes. Here it is 2006 and I am going back to Tango! I've had a long bout of foot pain and distractions like having to make a living, but I'm excited to be joining in the tango culture that has grown here in .... Montana. My teacher has been going to Argentina for many years and bringing Argentine dancers here to do workshops. The tango craze gathered momentum in the 1990's and has spread across the world. More tango music available now. We even have two rival dance teachers here in this little town! Any new Mudcatters (since 1998) who are tango fans, singers, dancers? Alice |
Subject: RE: Tangos From: Alice Date: 28 May 06 - 04:05 PM Found restored recordings with sound clips at this site: http://www.totango.net/restorations.html and a bit on the destruction of tango master recordings that were purposely burned by RCA in Buenos Aires. alice |
