Subject: Martin A-model mandolins From: ketida Date: 22 Sep 98 - 08:42 PM looking for Martin A-model, anyone know if they still make them? or have one for sale? |
Subject: RE: Martin A-model mandolins From: Liam's Brother Date: 22 Sep 98 - 09:50 PM The list price is US$2780, so you don't want to buy a new one. I just sold a used one in good shape through a dealer and, I recall, the retail selling price was about $550 - 575. That should be the best bet. Mandolin Brothers usually has 1 or 2 used ones in the store. |

They have a website, and are one of the best authorities on "Gibson" etc. Appraisals cost $20.00. You are VERY likely to find an "A-model" on their page.

Subject: RE: Martin A-model mandolins From: Chet W. Date: 23 Sep 98 - 09:09 PM If you're talking about the bent-top, flat-back models, you shouldn't have to part with more than several hundred dollars. I have seen, heard really, an awful lot a variation in the quality of the sound. They are not very loud, but it's a nice tone if you don't have to worry much about volume. If you're talking about the carved-top models, I think they're overvalued. You can get a teens or 20's Gibson probably for a lot less money and it will do you better service as an instrument. The Martins are rarer, so they might be better for collector/investor purposes, but as always, play them and buy the one you like. Mandolin Brothers are fine experts, nice folks, and always have the premium models in perfect condition, but they do have the highest prices of any of the well-known stores. I'll be there at opening time if I win a big lottery. Chet W. |
