Subject: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release
From: Paul Mills
Date: 05 Feb 04 - 02:45 AM

OK folks...it's on!

The CDs arrived a couple of days ago and Borealis and CIUT are gearing up for the celebration.

This will be a live 3 hour special broadcast on February 16th between 7PM and 11PM (est) of "Acoustic Workshop" from the Borealis office in Toronto featuring (we hope) Rick as the genial host and many musical guests. (If Rick can't make it, we know he'll be listening in). The new Rick Fielding CD will be featured, of course along with interviews and performances by his many friends.

The broadcast will (as usual) be streamed to the internet so that all of you can listen in no matter where you are. In addition, you'll be able to phone in with greetings if you wish. The phone number for that will be 416-530-0461. If you would like to phone in to order a CD, the number is toll free 1-877-530-4288. All the usual credit cards will be accepted and know that the bulk of the sales proceeds will be going to Rick and Heather - thanks, Borealis!

If you would like to email a greeting during the broadcast, just send it to info@borealisrecords.com

That's it for now. I'll be posting additional information as it emerges. This is very exciting!

Cheers,

Paul

I'll be there with a call or e-mail..

Vixen, you can call the number during the show, or send a PM to Heather (Duckboots).

I notice 'three hour special' and 'between 7PM and 11PM.'
Is it a Canadian thing, or does it mean something like 'at least 3 hours, and then, until they pull the plug'? The answer is probably 'yes'.

Jeri, I think Paul was counting in Canadian winter hours which are, of course, longer than usual.

It's very exciting that this has all come together the way it has. The support from Borealis and CIUT has been tremendous, they've worked very hard to get this going - and I should thank Eric Twight who hosts "Veritable Infusion", the programme after Rick's, because he'll be giving up his time for this special event. You said it Kat, we've got some incredible people in our corner and I'm constantly amazed at the kindness flowing our way.

The CD has arrived and it's terrific! As Jeri said, you can call 1-877-530-4288 on Monday, February 16 to order a copy or you can send me a PM.

There are going to be quite a few Mudcatters at Borealis, some are coming quite a distance too, and I hope many more will call in or e-mail. It would be great if some of you were actually getting together for your own party, but then it is a Monday night.

Karen, you want it archived - let me ask Paul. Hey, Paul? Can we archive it?

Heather

If you'll check the time of my original post here, you'll see that it was extremely late and the hour's of broadcast (7 to 11) I quoted were not just "Canadian" but simply the product of sleep deprivation. The three hours will actually be between 7PM and 10PM. Sorry 'bout that!

Re archiving, I will have to check with CIUT on that. I'll get back to y'all.

Finally, since starting this new thread, it has occured to me that folks who are tracing the old thread may be missing this information. Should I cross-post to the old thread? Advice please and thankyou.

Cheers,

Paul

'Archived' may just be the only way those of us listening on the internet can hear it.

CIUT has changed their format. Last week I got nothing. This week, it's no longer Real Audio, but something that opens my Windows Media Player. I was getting some show earlier, but now I can't connect at all. This sucks, and I'm so mad and frustrated right now I can't see straight.

The link on CIUT's page is correct - if you've got an old address in Real Player, it won't work. Here's the link for CIUT

It runs - on my machine - on Windows Media Player. Perhaps it needs mucho bandwidth. I'm listening to the 'Black Roots Radio' show right now. When it works, it sounds better than Real Audio ever did, but even now, I'm getting disconnected from the server occasionally.

This is the type of thing that makes me feel so confused with computers. This morning it just popped up and turnt on loud and clear. Nothing I did changed in the least. I'm going to leave it on a while and see, but so far I haven't been bounced and the quality is wonderful.

The news so far is this: CIUT uses a service to stream their programming to the internet. They have recently switched from RealAudio to Windows Media Player format. This player comes with windows although I don't know how long that's been the case. Anybody? If you don't have it I'm sure it's downloadable from Microsoft. If you're a mac user, special procedures are needed. I will advise as soon as I get the details.

I talked to CIUT's tech guy today and he will alert their streaming service about increased traffic next Monday night. I told him that several of us (yes, me too!) have been unable to "tune in" to the server. I get messages about server "too busy" or "unable to handle the traffic" blah, blah.

Just know that we're working up here to make Monday night happen on all fronts (including getting Rick to make an appearance...we hope!)

Cheers,

Paul

Paul 'Above and Beyond' Mills, thank you!

I remember a poem Mike Agranoff does about an FM radio DJ, and how various stations re-broadcast his last barricaded-in-studio show all over the place. It's probably overkill for this one, though.
Kath, I'd be there, but I think the Borealis office will be jammed with people they're expecting. They wouldn't be very happy with surprise guests, and it's just too darned far to drive (588 miles) so I could listen from a motel room and head back home. And I'd probably have to bring my own radio. Of course, there could be a parking lot party and folks could hold signs up and chant like they've done for Michael Jackson in the past.

I'll be listening if I can, and will be unable to call. I'm with y'all in spirit though, and I hope some of my love and happiness about this recording makes it back out your end of the line.

Once again, Windows stupidity strikes. It is virtually impossible for a Mac user to use Windows Media Player, whereas both systems can handle Real Audio. Guess which one wins. CIUT should have more sense.

I keep getting server not responding messages.

Bandwidth is not a problem. I've loaded the latest update & I can connect to some of the pre-programmed stations. I've given the program permission to update configurations. I've tried to connect beginning from the station's web page using both Netscape & Explorer.

What do I check next?

If you have Zone Alarm, make sure you have given permission for it to connect. I don't know if it is applicable in this case, but that's what kept me from being able to access some sites until I gave it the "all clear."

Hi everyone, I'd like very much to listen online as well, but the version of media player that came with Win98se wouldn't support the connection. I upgraded to ver 9.0 and, although, it can find CUIT and other radio stations I tried, it cannot connect to any. I hope to be able to correct this before 2/16. Any suggestios?

Hi All...

I have just received a suggested method for tuning into CIUT from their tech guy which works (at least for me) when all other attempts had failed.

First of all, you need Windows media player - no way around that. And I guess the latest version is best, although I don't know anything about that part of it.

So here's what you do:

Launch Windows Media Player, click on the file menu and choose "Open URL".

A window will pop up asking for the URL. Paste or type in the following address exactly as shown below:

mms://69.13.133.200/ciut

That should get you connected. As I say, it worked for me. We'll all have our fingers crossed. Please let us know if this doesn't work for you. The tech guy said, "If it still causes problems, check your network settings and/or firewall.". That might of some help to some of you.

Cheers,

Paul

I couldn't get in at all earlier today.

First try with IP address: no joy
Second try: Joy!
Tried the link from the page: no joy
Tried the IP address again: Joy #2

It does seem to work better. It's not my network settings (unless there's a timeout setting I can adjust) OR firewall. In any case, if the broadcast is to be cached, I'll have a safety net. I'll still have have a cow if I can't get the live show, but I'll know there's Hope.

I believe there ARE programs for Macs which play MicroSoft Media, but I'm not a Mac Geek.

I thought 'Catters might be interested in the announcement about Monday's show/launch that Borealis sent to a couple of other lists today. Here it is:

Radio CD Launch
Rick Fielding "Acoustic Workshop"
Monday Feb. 16th. 7:00 - 10:00 PM

On CIUT FM Toronto 89.5 Streamed on the web - (please see below)

Next Monday evening we hope you'll tune in and help celebrate the release of a new album of songs from singer, songwriter, radio host and teacher Rick Fielding. Rick normally hosts this radio show every Monday but we're turning the tables on him this week so that we can celebrate his music.

A number of musicians feel the same way as we do about Rick and wanted to be a part of this program as soon as they heard about it so we have moved the show from the CIUT studios to the Borealis Records office to accommodate a number of guest performers.

Joining us live on air will be Jason Fowler, Eve Goldberg, Holmes Hooke, Mick Lane, Stuart McLean, Paul Mills, Arnie Naiman & Chris Coole, Tony Quarington, Mose Scarlett, Ken Whiteley, Noah Zacherin and a couple of surprise guests that will be joining us by phone.
Listeners are invited to send Rick greetings to this email address:
info@borealisrecords.com

Because this is not your normal CD launch event where you might normally purchase the new CD, our phone lines will be open and we'll be happy to process your order during the show or you can order via the website; www.borealisrecords.com

We hope you can join us for an evening of great music and a tip of the hat to our friend Rick.

Bill Garrett Grit Laskin & Paul Mills

To tune this program in on the web please open Windows Media Player and insert this URL: mms://69.13.133.200/ciut

Thanks Paul for the info. I copied and pasted the address you provided and I was immediately connected to CUIT. Unfortunately, the reception is in and out, now mostly out, due to traffic on line? Do you have any info regarding the buffering option on the performance tab on the media player options. Is there a way to tweak the performance?

Duane.

Duane...

I'm really sorry but I don't know haow to answer your question. I may have appeared to be more technically adept than I am when it comes to computers and connectivity. I suppose increasing the buffer size would lead to a smoother playback. Try it.

Cheers,

Paul

I've got my really old version of MP set to buffer 10 seconds of data, and it's pretty smooth. I've tried the address Paul gave at different times, and I haven't had problems getting connected. I DO get kicked off once in a while, but I believe everything that CAN be done, HAS been done. Short of the Broadband Fairy Godmother showing up and turning my phone line 'pumpkin' into a cable, I'll just have to deal with net congestion.

There has GOT to be an enormous amount of technical orchestration going on behind the scenes to make this innovative idea a reality. From someone on the receiving end - THANK YOU!

I'm getting excited about this!

It is NOT necessary to have Windows Media Player.

JetAudio will play the CUIT stream...and will also record it, if you desire. You just go to 'file->open' and paste in mms://69.13.133.200/ciut, and you are there. I just double checked it.

JetAudio is a large download, but it does lots of things. If you'd like to try it, get it today or tomorrow and go thru the procedures, so you know how it works. I find it easier to use than WMP.

I sure plan to be there to hear this wonderful event...

Finally made it in!! Long haul, not helped by Canadian immigration. I blew it when I admitted I was a folkie, which immediately put me under suspicion. Then when they asked what I was bringing in, I blew it when I admitted I had a bodhran in the car. This resulted in everything short of a strip search, but finally I convinced them that I would handle it responsibly and that I had the proper training on it so as not to be a danger, they relented and let me through. But they admonished me that they would notify the proper authorities that there was an unregistered goatskin and to keep an eye on me. I am on my best behaviour, which isn't saying much for those that know me...... I will report on the festivities and take plenty of piccies. More later.

All the best,

Mick

It's an hour-&-a-quarter drive I'd happily make.

Failing any positive response in the short time left, I shall be on the cyber-side, listening intently.

(BTW, the Jet Audio that somebody recommended seems to be an excellent program.)

Hi Jeremiah. If you want to get by the bouncers, you'd best give Heather a call in advance. She told me last week that they needed to use a guest list approach to keep the numbers near the realm of physical possibility.

The "Virtual Schmirtual" roadtrip in Willie-o's homemade wooden truck departs in a couple of hours, as soon as he can devise some sort of lighting system for it. Yay! Impeccable timing, as always, Fieldings, for scheduling this right after my return to Upper Canada. I am looking forward to it very much.

Bill, JetAudio sucks.
Just my personal opinion, but I spent eternity downloading 17.8 MB, installed it (twice now) and it's main function seems to be to crash my computer (to the point where I have to turn the power off at the surge protector). It's a shame when a TinyFlaccid product works better than something else. I shall try again and hope nothing blows up so I can revert to WiMePla.

Paul & Mick, please don't strain anything schlepping. If the worst happens with the broadcast, please TAPE IT. When it comes to broadcasting this, I have faith in Paul & the Borealis Boyz.

I'm off to crash my computer for the 5th time today. Hear ya later!

1 more uninstall/install, 2 more crashes Then I tried to play a CD, and it wanted to 'get information' from the internet and wouldn't let me play the CD unless I was connected...then the PROGRAM crashed. (Assignment: write a song with the burden "...and then it crashed.") Progress! I uninstalled it and I'm downloading Media Player 7.1, but I'm keeping the old dinosaur Media Player, just in case.

I may end up having to call someone and asking them to hold their phone up to a speaker, but I'm gonna listen!

One other thought, if it wouldn't put a fly in the ointment...what about someone putting up a room at PalTalk and running it on there, for Mudcatters who can't get the broadcast, otherwise? It could be password protected so they wouldn't have to deal with any drop-ins, or not. Too much? Too late for an okay from Borealis, etc? Thinking out loud only.:-)

Okay the "techie guys" from CIUT ( honest they told me that's what Engineers are called these days... ) In the Dark Blue shirt, Sam Petite and in the Yellow shirt Fred Spek. These two guys just kept quietly going about their business of solving problems with amazing speed. They got things going and then kept things running smoothly during the show. I don't know if many folks caught the reference, but when Rick first joined the show over the phone, they had three different problems which were solved in under five minutes to make that hook up work. They deserve huge thanks for helping to bring this concept to reality. And besides they are just all around nice guys.

I read your post with considerable concern, and it is with a large degree of reluctant rectitude that I disregard my previous restraint and set down here, for your review, the activities of February 16th. I had attempted to exercise restraint in the telling of the tire tale, but after careful deliberation with my husband, we have agreed that 'tis better to tell the True Tale than to chance loosing the "L" in L,F,P&S: FAA.

Now you may not be aware of the fact that I am not a morning person. In fact, it often takes gentle handling to arouse me early in the morning, but on that particular Toronto morning your colleague, Mr. Lane, promised a "rare treat in fine company". Imagine my emotional roller coaster as one thing lead to another and soon in true Lay-about fashion Mr. Lane was flat on his back. ( Exhibit Page 5, Photo 5) ) and I found myself with a handful of Icy Nuts !!!

As I am sure you are aware, in the frigid Toronto morning, cold contractions of exposed nuts can make it difficult to get them off. Previously Mr. Big Mick had implied that I might someday be eligible for consideration of provisional Layabout status--- I thought this might be some form of field testing situation, so with great reluctance, I slowly and gently removed the nuts from the palm of my hand and let him resolve the situation personally. At no time that morning ( or elsewise during the weekend) did Mr. Lane even break a sweat. I can unequivocally testify that Mr. Lane's Lay-about-status was never endangered.

Sincerely,
Ms. Tinker

Paul:

Thanks so much for playing my song on the air last night. I didn't hear it, or what you and Peter T said about it, because I was in the middle of a band practice, but thoughtful friends let me know.

I just got the station last night when you played a cut by Paul Odegaard. I really enjoy the creative and inventive arrangements and beautiful quality of banjo playing and tunes on that CD. Mudcatters take note - get "Banjo Suite" for an enjoyable banjo listening experience - not your average run of the milll banjo CD.

Let us try this again.
Yes I liked Paul Odegaard's music too on the March 1 Acoustic Workshop and I thank Arnie Naiman for mentioning it and spelling out the fellow's name. Otherwise I would have had to call Paul Mills for info after driving myself crazy hunting for info on "Paulo Degard" (hey, that's they way I heard it, I think I wanted the guy to seem more exotic!).

(some day a playlist or mail-list of music heard on Acoustic Workshop would be nice...)

Anyhow, being the equal of any kindergarden pupil I can use Google and found:

So if anyone is so inclined (like me) they can get a copy of that fine music.

I'm bringing this up again because I just got the CD last week. Borealis sent it out rather quickly, it went air mail, and it took two weeks to get here. I think pigeons could probably manage in at least half that time!

It was, indeed, worth the wait. As I said somewhere before, it's the most Rick-like recording he's made. It has some heavy-duty picking songs on it, 'Houston Special' and 'Step It Up and Go'. It's got Hangman's Reel, so evocative that one can almost hear the squeak of a heavily-weighted rope swaying back and forth at the end. (If one has one's stereo cranked up pretty loud, that is.) It's got songs to make you wet both your cheeks AND your pants, and...am I the only one who thinks the recording of 'Cuckoo' is an incredibly innovative linking of the old-time American version back to its British roots?

This music, as his home, is one big 'Acoustic Workshop' and I'm grateful for both...or perhaps they're one and the same. In my own mind, I'm there, and I will be, whenever I listen, and hear, and lose myself in that wonderful music. Thank you.
