Subject: When I leave old Glasgow Behind--lyrics? From: GUEST,Boab Date: 06 Feb 04 - 11:59 PM I have a request from a friend --whom most of you will know, but allow me to refrain from a "name-drop"--who asks i I can supply lyrics to a song having the title/line "When I leave Old Glasgow Behind". This may well be a parody of another more widely known song, I don't know for sure. Could anybody help? |
Subject: Lyr Add: WHEN I LEAVE OLD GLASGOW BEHIND From: masato sakurai Date: 07 Feb 04 - 12:43 AM From here: WHEN I LEAVE OLD GLASGOW BEHIND

Subject: RE: When I leave old Glasgow Behind--lyrics? From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Feb 04 - 10:48 PM I don't know the tune, but I suspect it's a parody of WHEN I LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND, by Irving Berlin, from 1915. The lyrics of that song are posted in this thread. |
Subject: RE: When I leave old Glasgow Behind--lyrics? From: GUEST,Boab Date: 09 Feb 04 - 12:07 AM I doubt it, Jim---the "meter" doesn't fit. |
Subject: RE: When I leave old Glasgow Behind--lyrics? From: GUEST,Anne Date: 13 Feb 04 - 02:06 PM My brother in law invariably 'forgets'the words of this song at parties but here are lines which I remember which don't appear on this posting. 'The 'red biddie' drinkers I'll leave George's Square' 'I'll leave Celtic Park to the Celtic' So I'm assuming there must be other verses? |
Subject: RE: When I leave old Glasgow Behind--lyrics? From: Scabby Douglas Date: 13 Feb 04 - 07:14 PM I'll keep looking "Edna" - better give you your Sunday Name I suppose. It did occur to me that maybe a wee email to the Herald Diary might produce some results? There's a fair few folk in Glasgow read that... Cheers Steven |
Subject: RE: When I leave old Glasgow Behind--lyrics? From: edna Date: 13 Feb 04 - 08:14 PM GREAT one of the verses began: I'm leaving celtic park tae the celtic an rangers to Ibrox as well ......etc.... I will try the herald ... or the sunday post |
Subject: RE: When I leave old Glasgow Behind--lyrics? From: Hillheader Date: 13 Feb 04 - 08:31 PM Edna I have heard the Celtic and Rangers verses but cannot find it on the 'net. I think the McCalmans done it once on TV but these shows tended to be very ad hoc. Someone in Mudcat will find it. |
Subject: RE: When I leave old Glasgow Behind--lyrics? From: edna Date: 14 Feb 04 - 03:48 AM my mum just mentioned GLEN DALY.. I dont remember him but I'm off to the oxfam record exchange... he did some glasgow songs apparently.. x |
Subject: RE: When I leave old Glasgow Behind--lyrics? From: Hillheader Date: 14 Feb 04 - 03:56 AM Glen Daly did lots of Glasgow and Irish stuff. Many were recorded at the Ashfield Club so you could look for the "Live at the Ashfield" Lp's. Link to some Glen Daly titles Good Luck. |
Subject: RE: When I leave old Glasgow Behind--lyrics? From: Hillheader Date: 14 Feb 04 - 04:11 AM Also found a version by Lou Grant(??) released 1987 on the Scotdisc Label KITV 447. Another Glen Daly Link Scroll down to the "Legends of Scotland" entry. Ignore the graphics - they are out of synch! I will be out and about in Byres Road today and will try Ruthven Lane and Lost in Music in Ashton Lane. If I find anything I will post details. Try the Barras as well |

Subject: RE: When I leave old Glasgow Behind--lyrics? From: Scabby Douglas Date: 14 Feb 04 - 07:09 PM I asked around and got these verses - some of the same stuff is in here that is in the bits you already got. However, I think if you look at how the rhymes work, this pair of verses is more complete and the words are in the right order. I'll keep asking around.. Hope it helps... Steven I'll leave ye Kelvingrove Park tae the winchers Sauchiehall street tae the clicks The red biddy drinkers can hae George's Square The fly men can aw wear their micks The coolies can hae paddy's market The barra's an aw I don't mind But I'll leave ye something for auld lang syne When I leave auld Glesga behind. A millionaire offered a penny! So I threw in Rothesay as well. The toon's in an awful condition, That's why I,m going away I,m sailing away to the old USA. You can huv Glesgae back in a day. Seem to recall hearing this verse on an old Glen Daly Live from the Ashfield album that got trotted out every hogmanay in my parents home |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: When I Leave Old Glasgow Behind From: GUEST,Davy Gilchrist. Date: 22 May 09 - 10:41 AM LYRICS COMING BACK. Oh I'm leaving Glasgow forever. I'm saying ta-ta, cheerio! All my old ties I must sever, For the landlady says I must go. I'm sailing away ower the ocean To the land where the buildings are tall. I'm sailing away, to the old USA, So I bid you farewell, cheerio. I'll leave the Kelvingrove Park tae the winchers etc. I haven't thought of this old song in over twenty years until this morning. Thanks to everyone who has added lyrics on this thread. I'm living in the land where the buildings are tall now.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: When I Leave Old Glasgow Behind From: Jim Dixon Date: 26 May 09 - 08:43 PM Allmusic.com says that Glen Daly's recording of WHEN I LEAVE OLD GLASGOW BEHIND is on the album "Legends of Scotland," Elm CD 4135, 2004. That album also has Daly singing WHEN I LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND – which reinforces my theory that the Glasgow version is a parody. (It's possible that they changed the tune for copyright reasons.) |
Subject: Lyr Add: WHEN I LEAVE AULD GLESCA BEHIND From: GUEST Date: 13 Jun 09 - 04:24 PM This is my version, but I suspect it is not complete or necessarily accurate. If you have more I would be obliged to hear them. Alan McColl I'm leaving old Glesca for ever. I'm saying ta-ta, cheerio To all my good pals I said never, But the landlord has said I must go, Now the town's in a foggy condition, And that's why I'm willing to shift, I'm leaving for beautiful London, And I leave it to you in a gift. I leave Celtic Park to the Celtic, The Rangers in Ibrox can dwell, I leave you a bookie to lift all your lines, I leave the noon record as well, I leave you a pub at each corner, Where all you fine lads can get blind. And I'll leave you something for auld syne, When I leave auld Glesca behind. Now, I tried to get someone to buy it, I tried my hardest to sell, A millionaire offered a penny, If I threw in Paisley as well, So I'm sailing away doon the watter, I'm sailing way up the canaul. I'm sailing for beautiful London, And waving goodbye to you all. I leave Kelvingrove Park to the wenchers, And Sauchiehall Street to the clicks, The tipsters and spousters can have the jail square, And all you hard men can have micks, To the coolies I leave Paddy's Market. The Barras as well I don't mind, But I'll leave you something for auld lang syne, When I leave auld Glesca behind. |

It can keep everything it's got to offer. I've had enough of it. Not planning to strike out for auld Amurrikey, mind! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: When I Leave Old Glasgow Behind From: GUEST Date: 10 Nov 15 - 02:16 AM I did think that, were I ever to sing this, I'd sing "the Irish can have Partick Cross" rather than "the Irish can have Gorbals Cross" - but that's me thinking of pure auld lang syne - I barely know any Irish in Partick any more, and the same must have been true in Glen Daly's day. I miss the Partick of my grandparents. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: When I Leave Old Glasgow Behind From: GUEST Date: 10 Nov 15 - 02:21 AM Indeed, perhaps I'd sing "the Chinese can have Partick Cross"! |
