Subject: Lyr Req: V8 Blues
From: GUEST,Babs

Im looking for the name of the song and the lyrics for what I think is called "V8 Blues" or "I got the V8 Blues"
I know some of it goes as follows:

I got tired of comin in late
went right out and bought a new V-8

Shake Rattle and ramble, I got the V-8 blues, I got the V-8 blues

Took a drink of whiskey
gave me such a nerve
Shot it up to 90 goin' around a curve

Shake rattle and ramble, I got the v8 blues, I got the V-8 Blues

Met another car and how we hit
Nearly rolled a mile almost broke my neck

Shake rattle and ramble, I got the V-8 blues, I got the V-8 Blues

Tell you boys you better get it in your bean
You can't mix liquor and gasoline

Shake rattle and ramble, I got the V-8 Blues, I got the V-Blues

Any help is much appreciated =)

Thanks,
Babs

The only references I have found is to "V8 Ford Blues" by Johnny Winter. No lyrics though.

Thanks for the attempt, Eugene =)

Most of what I came across with the name "V8 Ford Blues" is a Blues song, not the one Im looking for.
I came across two names of some people who 'might' of sang it.

"The Three Tobacco Tags" and "The Wilders". I found a little information on each, and no lyrics. I did find a 30 second clip of the song by "The Three Tobacco Tags". It is called V-8 Blues and does have part of the words listed.

The serch continues...

Babz

I pieced this together from a couple of sound samples:
I got so tired of comin' in late,
Went right out and bought a new V-8.
CHORUS: I got the V-8 blues. I got the V-8 blues.
Shake-a-rattle an' ramble. I got the V-8 blues.

Started down the road for a little ride.
That new V-8 was my joy and pride.

[Took] a little drink and it gave me such a nerve,
Shot it up to 90 when I started 'round the curve.

    Round that curve goin' lickety-split,
Met another fella comin'. How we hit!
Sung by The Three Tobacco Tags on the various-artists album "Hillbilly Blues," ASV/Living Era CD #5361, 2001.

It is reissued also on JSP 'Mountain Blues' 4 CD box set - JSP 7740. The first 4 stanzas are as Jim posted above, but I hear the last line of the fourth stanza as 'Met another fellow, boy how we hit!' There are two additional stanzas after those four, similar to those remembered by Babs:

Let me tell you, folks, it was an awful wreck
Rolled about a mile and nearly broke my neck

Chorus

Listen here, boys, you better get it in your bean
You can't mix liquor and gasoline

Chorus

--Stewie.

The tune is also used in "Get Your Head In Here" also by the Tobacco Tags. Both are nice little ditties.

Turns out Babs had just about all the lyrics! Jim Dixon's efforts yielded most of the song but his amalgamated sound samples didn't seem to get the last two stanzas.

Here's how the song was sung on the Three Tobacco Tags' recording session on October 13th, 1936. According to Songs of The Tobacco Tags (Old Homestead Records OCHS-156, 1984) members on this recording were Henry Luther Baucum, Reid Summey, and George Wade, though the exact parts breakdown wasn't given (multiple members were known to play several instruments).

The liner notes unfortunately give little on the origins of the song other than the obvious fact that it was one of their humorous songs.

Below is my transcription of the lyrics.

I got so tired of comin' in late
Went right out, I bought a new V-8

CHORUS
I've got the V-8 blues
I've got the V-8 blues
Shake, rattle, and ramble
I've got the V-8 blues

Started down the road for a little ride
That new V-8 was my joy and pride

CHORUS

Took a little drink and it gimme such a nerve
Shot it up to ninety when I started 'round the curve

CHORUS

[instrumental break]

'Round that curve going lickety-split
Met another feller, boy, how we hit!

CHORUS

Lemme tell ya folks, it was an awful wreck
Rolled about a mile and nearly broke my neck!

CHORUS

Listen here boys, you better get it in your bean
You can't mix liquor and gasoline

CHORUS
