undoubtedly it's too late to book any gig, but there are many open stages around town where you are sure to meet musicians, possibly unload a disc or three. I'd be happy to give you suggestions if you know specifically when you'll be in Toronto. I will be hosting the open stage at Free Times Cafe on Oct 18. good sound system, excellent listening venue, usually get a couple dozen players/singers out. sign-up is at 7, music starts at 8. if you need to arrive later than 7, let me know and I'll put you on the list. I'll also be hosting a radio show on CKLN 88.1 FM on Oct 3 and Oct 10. if you can get a disc to me before then I'll be happy to play something from it. PM for my address.

The show is Acoustic Routes, on from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Joel Wortzman is the regular host, but I do one Sunday a month (usually the first) and sometimes (as in October) more than that. During the Summer I fill in for the season. Emphasis on in-studio performances and interview with some recorded material as well. nz

This is the website for Rasputin's Folk Cafe in Ottawa. It might have some events you would be interested in.

You might also like the Black Sheep in Wakefield, Quebec which is a short drive from Ottawa: http://www.theblacksheepinn.com/

Send me a PM if you think you might be in Ottawa. We could take you around some of the local watering holes.

WEll, we're ready for the off(nearly). We've picked the apples, made the damson gin, renewed the library books. Unfortunately we can't sweep up the leaves, they havent come down yet, so we'll have that to come back to later. We leave home tomorrow, have a short English tour and then fly to Toronto on Tuesday. Looking forward to meeting a few people Toronto way, and then heading for the Rideau canal around Portland,Ontario. We'll keep you posted, when we come across a computer.

Greg - if you read this on your travels - good luck - I might have been able to dig-out my list of sessions in Toronto but I guess it is too late.

peripatetic is a wise banjo player (ie moving from place to place - like a moving target)

We've made it to Toronto. Have had a night's sleep and will now have an explore. It seems very multi-cultural, half the squirrels are black. The leaves are very colourful. There dont seem to be any pubs(or not by where my brother lives), and there is no wine or beer to be bought in the shopping centre down the road. Apparently you have to go miles away for that, and the government runs the booze shops, otherwise the feckless inhabitants would be drunk all the time.

Look for something called "The Beer Store." From what I've seen, they're ubiquitous, and often tucked into malls here and there. They don't take credit cards, though.

Believe me, there's no booze at the local shops here. You have to walk half an hour up to 12th Street and Vine(OK I made that up, but some similarly American sounding geographical location)
And, believe it or not, they have different shops for beer and wine, or so I'm told. Whether there is a third kind of shop for whisky I havent found out yet. And the supermarket is brilliant, it has loads of different kind of bread, and lots of proper wild smoked salmon, not that farmed muck.

Beer is in the Beer Store, there are often separate booze stores in malls or along streets (but they aren't called "The Booze Store"), and wine is usually (at least where I've seen it) in a separate area within the food stores. Go find a Loblaw's, and enjoy. I wish they'd invade the US. The only place I've found supermarkets with a selection that came anywhere close was in the Washington DC area. Canadian supermarkets are the best, though. Loblaw's also has lots of other things besides food.

As far as having to go "miles away"...IN TORONTO!!?? I don't know what part you're in, but I haven't been through it. Public transportation is excellent. Hop on a bus or a trolley and go for a ride. All you have to do is remember how to get home.

Toronto iss huge. Miles to the beer shop, miles to the waterfront, miles to the bar we're plaaying in. Amazing amount of space.

I seem to remember a load of "bars" along Queens - in the shopping area of the Beaches. There is a tavern at the corner of Waverley & Queens near my cousin's B&B.

A word of advice - don't give 'em your UK post code in the beer store if they ask - it locks-up the machines and they have no sense of humour.

Mutton Chops thought it was funny and he is a born and bred Torontoan.

Greg,

Yes, the Ontario Government sure looks after us with their LCBO and Beer Stores.

You buy all wine and spirits at the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario). They also have a small selection of beer, although this is fairly new, perhaps in the last decade or so. Selected supermarkets also have small wine outlets. Beer is sold in the Beer Store.

I have a lot of American cousins. They always comment on the Black Squirrels, they had never seen one until they visited here.

Have a great trip. Toronto is still a pretty wonderful place.

A government monopoly on alcohol sales seems a pretty weird thing to me. Must be huge opportunities for corruption.Imagine being a whisky salesman, anywhere else youre selling to thousands of fairly independent shops, here you're selling to one organisation that supplies booze to 10 million people(or whatever the population of Ontario is).Well worth offering some fairly lavish hospitality to the people you're dealing with!
The visit is going well, we did a little radio last night and then played in Dora Keogh's bar.Interesting night, loads of fiddlers, some Cape Breton, and a lot of diddly-diddly as well. tonight( Friday) we are having a session in Macarthy's Bar, on Gerard betweeen Coxwell and Danforth. Anybody fancies a tune, a song or a chat, hurry on down.

Greg,

You should try to make Dora Keogh's Sunday afternoon session if you don't have other plans.

There's a special Cape Breton session at Dora Keogh's on Tuesday, but we're going to have to miss it as we are heading for Great Rideau Lake for a few days then. I think Dan McDonald from Cap as welle Breton is organising musicians and it should be good.

black walnut: make sure you come and say hello.
Now I am off to see Niagara Falls. We weren't going to bother, but after the 100th person asked us if we've been yet, we've cracked. It's obviously something you have to do. We haven't been up the CN tower either, which seems to be annoying people as well.

Niagara Falls was great. a big heap of water falling over a cliff. Not something you see every day. Unless you live in Niagara Falls of course.
Tonight(Sunday) we're playing at the Tranzac Club (Flying Cloud Folk Club) at 8PM.

We had the pleasure of meeting Greg and Kate and bringing them home to supper. They have joined the short but distinguished list of visiting Mudcatters who have found that Canada is not all inside the Toronto city limits! I don't get the chance to inflict my insider's tour of Perth and district on willing participants very often...

Yes, Greg - aren't autumns fabulous here? Red, orange, yellow, purple...even a drive down a city street in Toronto can be awesome at this time of year. A couple of days ago I drove north through farmland, where most of the the corn fields had been recently ploughed into squiggly rows, pumpkins were for sale at roadstands, and the maples and sumachs were glowing. I never get tired of the seasons, and I always feel sorry for those who have never experienced a colourful autumn. A great time of year to visit!

Willie-O's hospitality was fantastic. He is a lumberjack, and lives on maple syrup in a wooden hut and sleeps on a big pile of furs curled up with two grizzly bears. Life is certainly different outside Toronto.

If anyone south of TO travels through our area on the way to go see greg, our house is all set for overnighters. I'll be away, but Hardiman is here, and Mmario has phone info for reaching him as well as directions to our place. We are in North Central PA where 6 & 15 cross.
