Subject: RE: Results of Irish Music Poll From: Mickey191 Date: 16 Feb 04 - 12:49 AM Amos, I have the newspaper-didn't get this on the internet. Did every conceivable search with no result. I'm limited because I have webtv which doesn't have the same capabilities as a computer. Also it would help tremendously if I knew what I was doing. I'm sorry. Will try tomorrow when they're open. If that doesn't work-I guess I'll just have to type the rest of it. |

Subject: RE: Results of Irish Music Poll From: Mickey191 Date: 16 Feb 04 - 03:14 PM Sorry -- our web site editor didn't upload the list. Here it is. Best regards, Eileen Murphy Arts Editor Irish Echo Newspaper OK, everyone: we asked you to vote for your all-time favorite Irish song, and the results were overwhelming. Fans of every genre of irish music voted, with plenty of duplicate entries for particular artists. But in the end, it was the songs themselves that counted, no matter who performed them. Subject: RE: Results of Irish Music Poll From: Amos Date: 17 Feb 04 - 08:55 AM THey missed some beauts, I will say!! Surely the Rising of the Moon or The Foggy Dew or the Jackets Green, or even Kevin Barry or Finnegan's Wake deserve to be included, not to mention that grand old Tin Pan Alley Irish tune about the lass from Tralee, or even Sweet Vale of Avoca. And what about Black Velvet Ba-a-a-and, then? (end whine) Chacun a son mauvais gout as the old Irish saying goes...Thanks, Micky! A. |
Subject: RE: Results of Irish Music Poll From: Rapparee Date: 17 Feb 04 - 09:28 AM No "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling?" No "McNamaree's Band?" No "Torra Lorra Lorra?" No Dennis Day? No Bing Crosby? Alack and alas, what are the American Irish coming to? Mayor Daley would weep real tears, and Mayor Curley would as well. Ah, sure and begorrah, but they've lost their culture, sure! Good. |

Subject: RE: Results of Irish Music Poll From: GUEST Date: 17 Feb 04 - 03:28 PM How disappointing. But glaringly obvious it wasn't a poll of Irish voters. I dislike the term plastic paddy, but I think we have just found out their idea of Irish songs. Very sad. |
Subject: RE: Results of Irish Music Poll From: Mickey191 Date: 17 Feb 04 - 07:46 PM I agree with all the commentaries. An informal list if you're up for it. I know it's been done before. here goes: Raglan Road-Boolavogue-Patriot Game Salley Gardens-Bunclody-Skibereen and Ar Eirinu Nt Neosainn Ce Hi. The last Is one of the most beautiful songs ever, sung by Liam Clancy, about a lovely girl-"She was the Sunday In every week." Now compare that line-to "You're a whore, you're a slut." As in number 1 in this poll(which, by the way has lovely melody.) Slainte |

Subject: RE: Results of Irish Music Poll From: Lighter Date: 18 Feb 04 - 07:29 AM Interesting that only about 12% of the list is trad. But a similar list of "Favorite American [or English] Songs" would no doubt show far skimpier results. |

Subject: RE: Results of Irish Music Poll From: PoppaGator Date: 22 Oct 04 - 12:59 PM I didn't realize this was an Irish-American poll (rather than one conducted in Ireland) until halfway through the messages. Whaere is the Irish Echo located -- New York? I'd say the absense of old favorites like "Irish Eyes Are Smiling," "McNamara's Band," etc., is evidence of *some* progress toward musical sophitication on the part of the Irish-American public. Inclusion of the Scottish anthem "Caledonia" could indicate either ignorance or an admirable sense of pan-Celtic solidarity -- perhaps a bit of both. |
Subject: RE: Results of Irish Music Poll From: Nerd Date: 22 Oct 04 - 09:45 PM Actually, Mickey, you could at least have got the words right. (Whore is never spoken in Fairytale of New York) They are: It was Christmas Eve babe In the drunk tank An old man said to me, won't see another one And then he sang a song The Rare Old Mountain Dew I turned my face away And dreamed about you Got on a lucky one Came in eighteen to one I've got a feeling This year's for me and you So happy Christmas I love you baby I can see a better time When all our dreams come true They've got cars big as bars They've got rivers of gold But the wind goes right through you It's no place for the old When you first took my hand On a cold Christmas Eve You promised me Broadway was waiting for me You were handsome You were pretty Queen of New York City When the band finished playing They howled out for more Sinatra was swinging, All the drunks they were singing We kissed on a corner Then danced through the night The boys of the NYPD choir Were singing "Galway Bay" And the bells were ringing out For Christmas day You're a bum You're a punk You're an old slut on junk Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed You scumbag, you maggot You cheap lousy faggot Happy Christmas your arse I pray God it's our last I could have been someone Well so could anyone You took my dreams from me When I first found you I kept them with me babe I put them with my own Can't make it all alone I've built my dreams around you |
