Have any of you heard this song? A character on Gunsmoke sang it. It's about an old mining town and the words I caught were

Tenstrike girls are fat and sassy...

Tenstrike girls don't holler
long as you give them a dollar...

Tenstrike was a mining area in Minnesota if my memory is correct. And if Festus Hagen ( Ken Curtis) sang the song he was one of the Sons of The Pioneers and had a wonderful voice.

It was this episode, Don: Island in the Desert Part 1         Strother Martin guest stars as Ben Snow, a half-crazed desert hermit who saves Festus' life only to force him to become a human pack animal.

So, it was Martin who sang the song. Thanks!

Speaking of Ken Curtis, here's a nice page about him. If you follow the link to Gunsmoke, click at the bottom for detailed content, then check out the Audio and Music links, they're great, but no Tenstrike Girls.:-)

Know something like that called "Hangtown Gals" from way back...

Hangtown gals are lovely creatures
Think they'll marry Mormon preachers...
etc
Same song, Maybe?

Tenstrike (spelled as one word) is a town in Beltrami County, near Bimidji, Minnesota.

There is also a Tenstrike Mine in Graham County, Arizona, and another in Jo Daviess County, near Galena, Illinois.

Back in the late 1960s I saw an episode of "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour" where Ken Curtis (Festus) and Milburn Stone (Doc Adams) were guests. They mentioned that Curtis had been a member of the Sons of the Pioneers, and Campbell, Curtis, and Stone sat around and did a whole batch of Sons of the Pioneers songs. Amazing! The three of them sounded so much like the original group that it was downright uncanny!

The personnel of the group changed a number of times over the years, but their sound remained remarkably consistent.

Don Firth

P. S. Sorry, Bob, but I seriously doubt that that was quite the version sung on the television show. . . .

One of the more absurd things about TV, especially during the 50's and 60's, was that many of the featured performers were primarily known as singers and musicians, but they who rarely either sang or played on television. Like Desi Arnaz, Ozzie Nelson, Danny Thomas, to name a very few.

Q, O'Meara posted that link in '04.:-) I don't think that's the song, though as there are no matching lyrics, i.e. "Tenstrike girls, etc." Maybe it was changed for the tv show?

Ken Curtis, or Festus, lived much of his retirement less than a mile from my Dad's old ranch in the San Joaquin Valley, near Clovis, CA. The local museum has a nice display of his memorabilia which was donated by his widow and family. He was, as I recall, Roy Rogers' replacement in the Sons of the Pioneers group when Rogers went on to fame and glory in film. He began as a big band singer, but had a great voice for the western genre. Milburn Stone, "Doc" on Gunsmoke, lived for years just north of San Diego at Rancho Santa Fe. He had also been a singer and had a really fine voice. His brother, Joe Stone, was a writer for the San Diego Union and an author and playwright who contributed at least one or two Gunsmoke episodes.

Coincidentally, one of the old John Ford stock company stalwarts, Victor McLaglen, also had a large ranch a mile from our place until the late 1950's. I used to play with the caretaker's kids and fish in a pond on the property. I never got to meet Victor, but his wife once baked cookies for us. They were truly nice people. I don't know that he was a singer. The evidence is against it when you hear him on film.

Even better, here he is singing Tumbling Tumbleweeds in 1986 in Germany. Somehow the Festus costume just doesn't go with that voice!:-) (I knew he could sing beautifully, I've just never seen him do it, just heard!)

Check out "The Searchers," the old John Wayne film many feel was one of his best. Ken Curtis plays a ranch hand who vies for the same girl (played by Vera Miles) sought by Jeffrey Hunter's character. Fisticuffs eventually settle the matter. During the film, Curtis sings a beautiful love song. This could only have happened in a John Ford film, where he often lapsed into sentimentality. Oddly, this one works, in large part, due to Curtis' voice and a more understated arrangement.

Who would have thought Festus Hagen could sing like that. I always knew he used to be in the son of the pioneers but never heard him sing. You know he really was a pretty good actor, one of my favorite charactors of all time. Thanks for the post.

In my view the Searchers was the best movie ever made. Great story, great characters and great cast with so many really memorable character actors. I read somewhere that the Ken Curtis characterization (the voice with the really pronounced drawl) was the model for what the producers wanted in the Festus character but they made Fesus a bit seedier looking than the character in the Searchers.

I've got a DVD of several of Roy Rogers' old Westerns from his pre-TV days and a couple of them have the Sons of the Pioneers in roles as ranch hands by day and singers by night. Ken Curtis is recognizable as one of the group.

Forgive a little drift? I was amused by a Gunsmoke moment of an old gal driving along in a buckboard, singing "Strawberry Roan", which wasn't written until at least approx 1913.

Where are you getting all these verses, Bob? Are you making them up, or did you find them somewhere else? I've consolidated them up above.
-Joe-

Compare with "Hangtown Girls":

    Another mistake: "they're always grinning".

    "Hangtown Gals" is also in Hazel Arnet, I Hear America Singing! (Praeger, 1975, p. 97), with a different tune and no source given (saying simply "Traditional"). The lyrics have some minor differnces (underlined).

    1
    Hangtown gals are plump and rosy,
    Hair in ringlets, mighty cosy,
    Painted cheeks and josy bonnets.
    Touch them and they'll sting like hornets.

    CHORUS:
    Hangtown gals are lovely creatures,
    Think they'll marry Mormon preachers;
    Heads thrown back to show their features.
    Ha, ha, ha, those Hangtown gals!

    2
    [...] Dreadful shy of valentiners,
    Turn their noses up at miners,
    Shocked to hear them say "Gol-durn it,"
    Try to blush but cannot turn it.

    3
    On the street they're always grinnin';
    Modestly they lift their linen,
    Petticoats all trimmed with laces,
    Matching well their painted faces.

    4
    To church they very seldom venture;
    Hoops so large they cannot enter.
    Go it, gals, you're young and tender;
    Shun the pick-and-shovel gender.

    ~Masato

You could hardly blame Kitty. Almost every week someone would come into Dodge City and try to shoot the place up, or down.

As Matt Dillon on radio used to say: "It's a chancy job but it makes a man watchful, and a little lonely."
