Subject: RE: New Tom Russell CD: Indians Horses Cowbo From: Stewie Date: 07 Mar 04 - 06:54 PM Just received my copy. Some great stuff here, but I am disappointed at finding reprises of warhorses like 'El Paso' and 'Old Blue'. Surely there are plenty of deserving but relatively obscure songs that could have taken their place. Good to see 'East Texas Red' getting a guersey though. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: New Tom Russell CD: Indians Horses Cowbo From: Chris in Wheaton Date: 23 Feb 04 - 01:08 PM Took the cd as the premium for the KPFK pledge drive - may not be too late to do it too - check out the FolkScene web site - help support Howard and Ros - we're very fortunate to have this show still on the radio and web. Subject: RE: New Tom Russell CD: Indians Horses Cowbo From: Arkie Date: 22 Feb 04 - 07:01 PM Thanks for the comments on this, I saw a review of it last week and am glad to know it is now in circulation. Tom Russell is a major talent who certainly deserves much greater recognition. I was a little disappointed in Modern Art, I imagine, because I expected so much. It was enjoyable but not what I had come to expect from Russell. This one sure sounds like a winner. Now to get my order ready. |

Subject: Lyr Add: TONIGHT WE RIDE (Tom Russell) From: Midchuck Date: 22 Feb 04 - 09:32 AM Lyrics to "Tonight We Ride" - as I heard them. I love this song. It's a breath of fresh air in a culture of obsessive Sensitivity and political Correctness. Peter. ***************************************************** Pancho Villa crossed the border In the year of ought-sixteen. The people of Columbus Still hear him riding through their dreams. He killed seventeen civilians, You could hear the women scream. Black Jack Pershing on a dancing horse Was waiting in the rings Tonight we ride! Tonight we ride! We'll skin old Pancho Villa And make chaps out of his hide! Shoot his horse, Siete Leguas, And his twenty-seven brides; Tonight we ride! Tonight we ride! We rode for three long years 'Till Black Jack Pershing called it quits. When old Pershing wasn't looking, I stole his fine spade bit. It was tied onto his stallion, So I rode away on it To the wild Chihauhan desert, So dry you couldn't spit. Tonight we ride! You bastards dare! We'll hunt the wild Apache For the bounty on his hair. Then we'll ride into Durango, Climb up the whorehouse stairs. Tonight we ride! Tonight we ride! When I'm too damned old to sit a horse, I'll steal the Warden's car. Bust my ass out of this prison, Leave my teeth there in a jar. You don't need no teeth for kissin' girls, Or smokin' cheap cigars. I'll sleep with one eye open, 'Neath God's celestial stars. Tonight we rock! Tonight we roll! We'll rob the Juarez liquor store For the Rey Posada gold. And if we drink ourselves to death, Ain't that the cowboy way to go? Tonight we ride! Tonight we ride! Tonight we fly! We're heading west! To the mountains and the ocean Where the eagle makes it's nest. And if our bones bleach in the desert, We'll consider we are blessed. Tonight we ride! Tonight we ride! |
Subject: RE: New Tom Russell CD: Indians Horses Cowbo From: open mike Date: 21 Feb 04 - 02:07 AM i did not notice the "no telling" song being credited to linda thompson.. as eyore would say..."thanks for noticing" (the liner notes are quite "spare" and so not give much detail)--oh i do see the final line in credits mentions Linda for "No Telling"-- I thought it was his! glad i got that info correct now. |
Subject: RE: New Tom Russell CD: Indians Horses Cowbo From: Midchuck Date: 20 Feb 04 - 11:12 PM I think this is his second best album ever (after The Man From God Knows Where). I've had it six days. So far I've only learned Tonight We Ride and No Telling. Both Linda's original lyrics for No Telling, and Tom's revisions (as I transcribed them) are here. I'm glad he wrote Tonight We Ride because of its sensitive, New Age, politically correct lyrics. We need more songs like that. Peter. |
Subject: RE: New Tom Russell CD: Indians Horses Cowbo From: open mike Date: 20 Feb 04 - 10:31 PM what's a cowbo? I composed a wonderful post, which got eaten by mud cat somehow...I wll try to re-formulate it: Among the many gems on this is one of the most touching love songs I have heard lately..one which praises the power of music and I am always attracted to those songs! No Telling (There's no telling what a love song can do)is sweet, and there are songs here which have heroes, unsung and otherwise, whose stories are inspirational. Edward Abbey, Chief Seattle, Ira Hayes and others who stood their ground and made their mark, including old blue the dog who lost part of an ear to a bear. Reilly's daughter is one of the people in the song about 7 curses. Thanks for posting this! (and I wonder whose daughter you are, really?!) Andrew's guitar work is always phenominal, and there is also accordion and a contribution from the ever-amazing fiddler from Hot Club of Cow Town as well as vocals by Eliza Gilkyson. Listen for the Plaza Monumental Juarez Bull Ring Band! Yippee ti yi yo for Indians Cowboys Horses and Dogs! |

Subject: RE: New Tom Russell CD: Indians Horses Cowbo From: Mudjack Date: 20 Feb 04 - 08:25 PM Just saw Tom and Andy in Portland OR last month and didn't see the new CD. He was doing music from Modern Art. Something else to look forward to. MJ |
Subject: New Tom Russell CD: Indians Horses Cowbo From: GUEST,Reilly's Daughter Date: 20 Feb 04 - 06:16 PM Tom Russell is back with a wonderful new CD of songs set in the west called "Indians Cowboys Horses Dogs." He wrote about half the songs and includes a traditional folk song and songs from Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Marty Robbins, Linda Thompson and Peter LaFarge. There is an incredible ten minute version of Dylan's "Lily, Rosemary & the Jack Of Hearts" that he does as a trio with Eliza Gilkyson and Joe Ely. Andrew Hardin's incredible guitar playing is heard throughout with some fiddling by Elana Fremerman from Hot Club of Cowtown and accordion from Joel Guzman. |
