Subject: Sami joik alert From: open mike Date: 22 Feb 04 - 12:54 AM For those of you who are able to get satelite t.v., Direct T.V. will air a special on Mari Boine, Norwegian Sami musician. There is some interesting footage of reindeer races, and also great interview with Mari and of course music...some recorded at festivals in 1995. She also mixes her cultural sounds from north of the arctic circle with African music from near the equator. I think she is now married to an African man. The show will be repeated on World Link t.v. tomorrow, sunday Feb. 22, at 1400 hours and 2000 hours (2 & 4 p.m. pacific time) see link t.v. or here: night of long shadows program description |

Subject: RE: Sami joik alert From: open mike Date: 22 Feb 04 - 02:04 AM mari boine i guesw the show times are 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. sunday Night of Long Shadows: Mari Boine Length: 01:00 Type of program: World Music Broadcast Times Saturday, February 21 8:00 PM Sunday, February 22 2:00 AM Sunday, February 22 8:00 AM Sunday, February 22 5:00 PM the DTV site has this review: Singer Mari Boine lives way beyond the arctic circle in northern Norway. She belongs to the Sami, an ancient indigenous people who used to be reindeer herding nomads. Because of pressure to assimilate, she was brought up to reject the songs of her people. It was only when she reclaimed her heritage she finally found her real voice as a singer. In her music she blends the traditional Joik singing of the shamans with elements of Jazz and Rock to create emotional and haunting statements. Since Peter Gabriel released her first Album Gula Gula in 1992 Mari Boine has gained an international reputation as one of the leading personalities in World Music. This film follows Mari Boine in her musical journeys, simultaneously tracing her traditional roots and her recent immersion in African musical cultures. |
