OK folks here we go with tongue in cheek.

I am currently very busy trying to set up a folk club in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire.

I have the venue, but no resident folk group capable of singing traditional folk numbers.

Is there any group out there that would like to be the resident group?

Peace and quite for singers guaranteed. Every other Sunday night. It will be initially a singalong evening. All singers will be very welcome.

This will be a non profit venture. Although I love folk music, I will only be running it, not singing or dancing as nobody would come along. LOL

Why don't you advertise it around here (mudcat) as a session to start with -then see who turns up on a regular basis. More chance of getting musicians to come along I'd say.
Try posting on the Punch the Horse fred thread - most of those folks are from north lincolnshire or hull.

Sooz has also made the same offer. At this rate I will be certain of a good start.
Their is a lady a few miles out of Market Rasen, who teaches Lincolnshire dialect and does lots of poetry. I am thinking of trying to get her along. do you think that would be a good idea?
Just need to sort a few more issues, and then hopefully will be up and running.
One issue I have is that it would be in a club, and the Sunday evening would be open purely for the folk scene. As its a club, people coming into the club who are not members, would have to join on a yearly membership, which costs £10 per annum. Other than that, there will be no entrance fee and anybody who becomes a member will be entitled to use the facilties socially whenever. Does anybody see that as an issue? I can't change that aspect.

Villan, I'd be delighted to come but there's a bit of an 'Ouch' factor with the ten-quid per year sub! Our club at Gainsborough (yep, a pal of Sooz) is completely free, not even a door-charge, so the thought of having to pay a tenner to the cricket club (i.e. not even benefitting your folk club!) is a bit of a pain in the neck! Still, on the positive side, maybe it's a small price to pay to help get a new venue up and running in Lincs.

When are you planning to start? The sooner the better? I'll be there (despite the above moan!).

And is your Lincolnshire dialect lady Loretta Rivett? If so she's excellent.

Yes the membership fee is an ouch. I could of course try one of the local pubs in Market Rasen, but I am reluctant because I believe all singers should be given a quite environment. Pubs can't always provide a room that is isolated and therefore is not very condusive for the singers.
Market Rasen Cricket and Football club are truly an excellent club and provide sport to the local community including the youngsters. Therefore the membership fee goes towards helping such a club survive. Very important. It is a one off charge. I believe strongly in keeping traditional things alive and not just disappear out of existance.
I am not sure if it is Loretta Rivett. I know she lives in Osgoby. Looking into that.
The way things are going, I reckon I could be up and running by the end of March (maybe earlier).
Incidentally would I need to provide any equipment for the singers?

Starting a folk club is a worthy challenge

You need a venue - you got one

You need performers

You will need finances and I've found that this comes from all attendees

If you book guests this will help keep interest.

I started out with a weekly sing and we all paid a modest quid

after a year we set up a club and booked locals and charged 3-4quid

then we went big and charged 5-10

we are still in business.

We book BIG names

I've just set up a 2nd club to promote local and new talent again based on £3 entrance 50% to the artiste regardless.
+ raffle

I can see this going the way of our 1st club but I wont let it.

Loads of leaflets, newspaper and we have a local folk mag in Unicorn

A name draws but requies long term planning, e.g. Vin Garbutt has a waiting list of clubs who want to book him,I'm waiting in 2005 usually 9 -12 months for others

Our club in Gainsborough is indeed free (except when we have a booked guest - His Worship and the Pig March 5th) but we cannot promise a quiet venue. It would be worth £10 a year for that!

Thats very interesting about the £10 quid. I am still not sure, as it may stop folkies coming along. I really want to make a success of this, if I can, and making good decisions at the beginning are very important.

Villan, keep it going, I'll be there. Glad it's Loretta, she's got a great repertoire and some truly funny stuff (as long as you're a yellow-belly and can understand the accent!)

Breezy - where are you based? I bet you're Darn Sarf where there's plenty o'brass! We only get paid peasant's wages in Lincolnshire! :0) I don't think we expect stuff for free but there are limits to what's affordable - travelling 30-40 miles each way to several clubs a week gets a mite expensive (although not as expensive as divorce!).

Sounds like a lot of sound advice coming your way form people who've done the journey. I'd still reopeat my earlier comment about considering a session format. There are a few of us who wouldn't want to do a 10 minute slot (not polished or confident enough, etc) but who would still like to come along and meet other muso's and play a bit. Is there room for a hybrid approach do you think?

(Went to a great night in Lincoln on Sunday BTW at the Burton Arms organised by Jamie from The Hoolies - an open session that lasted form 8.30 till 12.30 - packed out,noisy, loud and excellent!)

And pirating people's CDs (as Breezy mentioned) is something I strongly disapprove of! I got a right slagging-off on Mudcat one time because I suggested to a guy that he should buy a John Connolly CD to learn John's songs instead of trying to blag a a copy or MP3 from other Mudcatters. I was rudely told that, as John's retired from his full-time job, he should play for free and give his CDs away! Weird!

I have had a fantastic offer from CARA to act as a resident group whilst the club gets built up. This will help me a lot.
It means I can actually get things rolling.

I am willing to run the night according to what people want.
I will be juggling things around dependant on the number of people who want to sing or if for example you would like to play with other people, thats fine. I thought that maybe the last 1/2 hour of the evening might be a glorified singalong with everybody joining in, providing that everyone can agree on what numbers to do.
Obviously I do need to have some structure to the evening and the resident band will have a set amount of time.
What I don't want is for people who are not very experienced etc being thrown to the wolves.
The more experienced performers will obviously have an important roll to play in making it a nice evening.
I do have quite a number of nice offers from poeple such as Stitherum, Riverhead Ramblers, Kate Witney, Hilary Waterfall who will try to get young talent from De Aston School to attend on occasions,Di Cappo (have I got that right), Strollin' Johhnny and Dáithí. I am also trying to get in touch with The Little Band.
I am sure there will be many more.

I am looking at the possibilty of the first night being Sunday 7th March or Sunday 21st March. So watch this space.

One thing that I can't get away from, and that is the dreaded once off membership payment of £10 which lasts for a year (I don't see any of that for future investment). This allows anybody to go to the club on other nights etc. Hope you all appreciate my problem and won't moan at me when I twist your arm for it :-)
Oh and please don't ask me to pay you for what you do, cuase there won't be any. Sorry about that.
One thing that really makes me happy is the way that you are all so helpful.

Breezy - re divorce, I too speak from bitter experience! Got the new model now though - magic!

Villan - Cara are a very good band and jolly nice chaps to boot. Re the evening's format, personally I'm happy to take turns in a singaround/playaround, or to do a floor-spot, whatever fits best. I guess it's a case of suck-it-and-see for the first night or two, depends on who's there?

7th March is probably a no-no for me as I'll be at Heathrow that day, although I'll get there if I'm home early enough. Otherwise, see you two weeks later!

no membership requirements ,just £3 on the folk club door.

The 'Spotlight' guest will be George from the Herga club

Legion opens up at 7.00 I'm there bout then.

I'd love to come to your club but it's a bit far from North Lincolnshire for a Sunday neet - unfortunately I have to earn a crust at the day-job Monday - Friday!

Villan, by a 'floor spot' I mean standing up at the front and doing several songs together, as distinct from the singaround format we use at Gainsborough where you take turns to perform one song at a time sitting wherever your seat happens to be in the room. Some people, like me, prefer a floor-spot where you have time to get 'warmed-up', but others prefer the comaparative anonimity of the singaround ("I'm sitting down, therefore I'm audible but invisible"!).

Whatever, I reckon you'll get plenty of performers. I'll bring me guitar and fit in with whatever you're planning. I'm sure it'll be a successful venture if the comments in this thread are anything to go by.

A floor spot is what I'm thinking of for you. You must bring your guitar. I will make sure that you get the peace and quite whlist you sing. I prefer that singers stand or sit in front of the audience if they are up for it.
For people that prefer to remain a bit anonymous then I think the last hour will probably be for them. I want to have in that session, singers/players who will lead the rest into communal singing playing. After all when you have had a drink or 2 thats when everybody wants to sing/ play/ dance and whoop it up. I think I am going to call this my Groupie Jamming Session and hopefully it will be good fun. Even I might be brave enough to join in by then LOL

I will need to split the singers/players into the "Floor Spotters", "Groupie Leaders" and the "Groupie Jammers", then I will know who is willing to do what.

One idea I have for the last hour and I need to work on this one is :-

take all of the 3 groups as mentioned above, and depending on how many people there are, split everybody up into workshop groups, and let each group perform numbers that the rest can join in with. So if there are 4 groups they all get 15 mins each to enetertain us.

More than anything I want everybody to enjoy themselves.

I don't know you but I have a feeling I am going too soon :-) I have tried to take on board what you have been telling me. Anybody who is willing to sing at the Market Rasen Folk Club and put themselves out for me is special and deserves to be listened too.

Not sure if my elaborate plans will work, thats where you folkies out there will help. Do they make sense, my ideas. If I am talking a load of cobblers and something is not feasable, tell me. I might get upset (not really), but I will take it on board. I'm very flexible really. I have lots of ideas which I knock around until I have a solution.

Good news. The £10 membership is no longer applicable.

I will however for the first 2 dates probably have to charge £1 a head entrance fee.
Once I have the initial teething problems sorted, then I hope to be able to allow free entrance.

Now make it £2 for performers and £3 for others cos it looks good value, then you'll find out if you're wasting your time or not.
Build up a kitty and bring in guests and you will be O K after easter
Put a modest prog together but ensure the eveing finishes on a high note.
Please forgive this intrusion, but start as you intend to continue and think bigger, it can work.

Breezy thanks for your comments. Unfortunately life is a bit different up this part of the world. With the way house prices have shot up here and council tax, with the wages stagnant, people aren't so wealthy. (i don't think so!!!!)
I do plan to have a raffle and will use this to build up enough money for acts in the future.

Villan, good ideas from Breezy - a couple of quid's not too much to charge ,or if you don't want to overdo it for a start try performers £1, listeners £2, that's a fairly standard level of charge in this area.

The 10 quid membership did seem a bit of a put-off but, when you divide by 26 (for a fortnightly club), it's cheap at 38p a night! However, the cricket club would have been the richer and the folk club would not, so I'd personally favour the entrance fee (presumably you'll have to pay a hire fee for the room out of that but it'll leave a growing fund for the eventual booking of guest artistes).

Sooz tells me you're planning 14th March as your starter now - see you then.

I will keep it at a pound for the first couple of sessions (which will go to the club - not the folk club) and a have raffle.
I will after that be paying just for the use of the club. I am still hoping then that the raffle on its own will clear the hire cost and help build up funds for the future.

Yes March 14th is the first night. I have a new thread with the up to date info of who will be there and how to get there etc.
