Would anyone have any information on which song this line comes from, and possibly send me the rest of the lyrics? Thanks

Don't mislead the chap Tim - it's ALWAYS pouring with rain...! Well at least it seemed so this year... Actually, if anyone really dones know the words and tune to this I would love to know them too - for purely partisan reasons! Drookit' Mo

I checked on the web and couldn't find it. I will ask for you on the Scots-Music list and get back to you.

In the meantime, it inspired me to write my own song.

O, the sky is bluer in Scotland
I heard a Scotsman say
With azure bright o'er citrus trees
We've ne'er a gloomy day.

O, the sun shines brighter in Scotland,
I heard a Scotsman say
With golden warmth like Florida's
We tan our skins in May.

O, the sea is warmer off Scotland
I heard a Scotsman say
'Midst angel fish and giant clams
Manatees loll and play.

O, the fields are lusher in Scotland
I heard a Scotsman say
The peacocks prance, the monkeys dance
And merry quaggas bray.

O, the cities are grander in Scotland
I heard a Scotsman say
Tall spires of gold, and gates of pearl
Reflect upon the Tay.

O, the music is sweeter in Scotland,
I heard a Scotsman say
Plucked psalteries ring, while minstrels sing
The madrigal and lay.

O, Australia it has beastly snakes,
I heard a Scotsman say,
Canada's trees all groan with snow,
And England's wet and gray.

O, America's full of guns and strife
I heard a Scotsman say
New Zealand's birds are lacking wings
And Ireland's too far away.

O, I think I rather like it here
I heard a Scotsman say,
So beneath my blue, my native skies
Here at hame I'll stay.

I was trying to think of one. Something from the tunes to which the Louis Caroll poems were set would likely work, as it has that same simplistic childish metre. A sonnet writer I ain't.:)

I already got a flame on this. I wonder if Louis got them in his day from carpenters and oysters?:)

G'day,
Great song Tim. The tune will have to be "The Blue Skies Of Scotland"

Cheers,
Alan

The tune or the title?

BTW, I have had no responses from the Scots list respecting the original post. I can't say as I have ever heard of it.

Obviously this song existed even before Tim rewrote it with no more information than a line or title. I'm getting curious whether the original is half as good as the version above. Look at track 10 < a href=http://www.movingmusic.co.uk/mus/mus480.htm> over here if you had thought the title was an invention.

Hi,

Guess what. It fits the tune of "Star of the County Down" (but then most things do) and if you really string out the words you can make them fit "Loch Lomond" too.

The tune is completely different from that of "Star Of The County Down". This song is played in triple (waltz) time. I have a set of two CDs containing this song recorded by The Tartan Lads (The Sounds of Scotland, EMI Records Ltd, Hayes, Middlesex, UK, 1992). According to a short explanation, this song was written by Douglas. The song starts with CHORUS: The sky is bluer in Scotland, The grass is greener-------. / The air smells sweeter, the rivers are deeper. / The mountains are lovelier----. --------- . I cannot follow the words. That's why I asked the lyrics last year, although the title of the thread has been changed to wrong one (CHORDS PLEASE: Leader of the Pack). Anyway, I am looking for the lyrics, too. Does anyone help us?

Regards

Teru

hi Teru,

I was referring to Tim's words. I've never heard of the original one. Sorry about any confusion.

Tim,

Exellent words, but can I suggest a change from citrus trees to rowan??? Having been born and bred there, I seem to remember a distinct lack of citrus trees in the back yard - but maybe the climate outside Edinburgh was more salubrious!!!

Cheers

I think that's the point Anne - though I wouldn't want to put words in Tim's mouth... I don't think many angel fish, manatees, quaggas, spires of gold, etc are seen in Scotland either....

Born and bred a Cape Codder - I can picture many a person I grew up with nodding and smiling if you just substituted "on Cape Cod" for "in Scotland" and " Cape Codder" for "scotsman"

I would be willing to substitute "olive" for citrus.:)

Teru, perhaps you could post the real words for the gentleman who started the thread? I asked on the Scots Trad list but got no replies.

It occurred to me that this would fit to the tune of The Derby Ram, but then I'd have to write a chorus. Indeed, Sir, it's true, Sir, I've never been known to lie . . .

Oh the kilts are shorter in Floriday,

Where the seventh generation Scotsmen say,

"Ya caint take the high road we only got the low

but pack yuh up some oranges, afore yuh up 'n' go

and take yuh 'long some skeeters,

to feed the highland midge,

it's 'bout time we found some use,

for that nasty sonuva b&^$%!.
