Subject: Help save live session in Portland,ME From: ranger1 Date: 24 Feb 04 - 07:07 PM Calling any Mudcatters in a reasonable proximity of Portland, Maine: the live sessions on Sunday afternoons at The Brian Boru Public House are in danger of being done away with. I received an e-mail today from one of the regular players (via CeilidhHouse, an excellent non-profit organization dedicated to Celtic music, language, and culture) asking for help. Anyone who would like to help can send an e-mail to borus@maine.rr.com. Please cc tomrota@msn.com and put Sunday session in the subject box. There are so few places that people can go and listen to good music for free these days, it would be a shame to lose even one. Thanks in advance. |

Subject: RE: Help save live session in Portland,ME From: ranger1 Date: 25 Feb 04 - 06:12 PM Sinsull, I am indeed in Portland. I don't play or sing, but I sure do like to listen. I don't make the session nearly often enough, don't usually get to the Boru until 8ish and the session is over around six. However, this Sunday I'm going to try to get there to show support. Martin from Barton, I have no idea where the M25 is. Best way to get here from your side of the pond is to fly into Boston, MA and get on I-95 and head north. Follow the signs for Portland, ME, get off on the Franklin Street Exit (it used to be Exit 7, but they've renumbered all of them and now I don't know how to tell people how to get where they need to be!) and go up the really big hill. Take a right on Fore Street until you come to a five way intersection with a statue of John Ford (the movie director, guy sitting in a chair wearing a hat and smoking a pipe). If you look to your right, there will be a two-story brick building painted red with a really big pint of Guinness painted on the side of the building. That's the Brian Boru. If you make it here, I'm sure they'd let you sing a round, even though it's a session session. People are pretty good about sharing. |

Subject: RE: Help save live session in Portland,ME From: Dave Bryant Date: 26 Feb 04 - 08:39 AM Yes, I was wondering about the ME (which is Medway in the UK) because I thought originally that this was on of The Shambles' threads - he's always going on about sessions in danger around Portland, Dorset, UK. :-) |

Subject: RE: Help save live session in Portland,ME From: The Unicorn Man Date: 26 Feb 04 - 10:55 AM Dorset?? That's even further than the good old U.S of A. |

Subject: RE: Help save live session in Portland,ME From: GUEST,Hugh Jampton Date: 26 Feb 04 - 11:28 AM Ranger 1, Is it more customary to hold sessions that finish early evening than go on to the late night hours as we often do in Britain? |

Subject: RE: Help save live session in Portland,ME From: The Unicorn Man Date: 26 Feb 04 - 02:32 PM If so, is that because our licencing laws are so Mickey Mouse we have to make the most of our pubs when we can? |

Subject: RE: Help save live session in Portland,ME From: ranger1 Date: 26 Feb 04 - 05:38 PM Hugh, I don't know about other places around the US, that's just how the session at the Boru runs. I think a lot of the musicians have day jobs. And Gargoyle, Ceilidh House has nothing to do with the session, it just let one of the regular players use its e-mail list to drum up support. And Martin from Barton, I'm sorry you won't be able to make this Sunday. Perhaps another time? Thanks for the interest, all. ranger1 |

Subject: RE: Help save live session in Portland,ME From: Cuilionn Date: 27 Feb 04 - 12:08 AM Hmmm, well, since the wee sleekit timorous gargoyle brings us up, I'll mention that all Mudcatters are cordially invited to an official "Ceilidh House" event: our Volunteer Appreciation Ceilidh (first in a series) at the Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick, Maine. The ceilidh will be held this Saturday, 2/28/04, starting at 7:00 PM. Admission is free for all past & present volunteers. Others are invited to donate $3 - $5 to defray room rental costs. Traditional instruments, singers, dancers, bards, small children, and other such creatures are welcome, as are non-alcoholic beverages and contributions to the refreshments. The venue is wheelchair-accessible. (PM me for further details, or e-mail CeilidhHouse1@aol.com.) Hope to see you there! --Cuilionn |
