G'day Adrien, Allan C & harpmaker,

I guess that the essence of harpmaker's question is "What (tuning) system is your concertina ... presuming that you already have one ...?" Although, Adrien's question may have been :"Who, around Yorkshire, can help/teach/advise on playing Irish music?".

I can't help on that one - but, in general terms, the concertina you really want to have is a classic London-made 36+ key Anglo-chromatic type ... and they cost £1000s these days, since the Irish-music-enthusiasts have bought them all! It is possible to play Irish music on other types ... including the English system (tied with the concert flute as the fastest melody-playing intrument in existence) ... but the Irish won't talk to you!

There are some good modern-made Anglos using hybrid concertina/accordion manufacture from Italian factories like Stagi - and somewhat better ones from rather smaller makers trying to produce affordable instruments that don't require you to mortgage the family home.

Regards,

Bob Bolton (Australia)

If you play an anglo the you will probably find THE IRISH CONCERTINA by Mick Bramich very useful. published by Dave Mallinson Publications ISBN 1-899512-25-X      http//www.mally.com Ithink it was about twelve quid

One of the best players of Irish music on the Anglo is a Yorkshireman. Check out Chris Sherburn (Last Night's Fun). if he has a local gig.

Yorkshire is a big place, Adrien (well by English standards at least - but I agree its not like California is BIG)!
Anyway, by coincidence today I received my International Concertina Association's Newsletter and in its Music Supplement it gives a list of people willing to act as voluntary mentors (rather than paid teachers). It includes:-
Barry Callaghan from Sheffield, who plays the Anglo,
Dave Ball from South Yorkshire, who plays English,
Dave Turner, from Stockton on Tees (well I know its not Yorkshire but you may live in the far north ...!), who plays English and
Geoff Wright from Doncaster, who plays both Anglo C/G and English (clever fellow!).
If you are interested please PM me and I will forward their telephone numbers and/or emails addresses!
"Abroad for pleasure, as I was a-walking ...!"
Alan

I play Irish music on an English concertina... Lachenal c 1880. But Im in Shropshire. Our session at the Boat Inn, Jackfield is one of the best Irish music sessions anywhere!

Wheatstone and Lachenal and others experimented with different systems, Anglo, English and Duet. Irish music tends to be played on the Anglo system as it fits in better with the style of the music. Some of the triplets are difficult on the English. But I love it and wouldnt swap it for anything, Ive owned it since I was 9 and have only been learning Irish music for the past 4 years.

There are the Concertinas at Witney workshops each autumn, but thats in oxfordshire.

Last nights fun are in Whitchurch, Shropshire this coming Saturday... The concertina playing by Chris is wow. Dont know as yet whether I will be going to see them as Im going to the St Pats day parade in Brum on sunday.

Hope you find a good teacher and a good session.

Each month on the first Sunday, there's a play around at the Jolly Sailor pub on thorns lane Wakefield. There's always a plague of concertina players in there, and they are a friendly lot and I should think at least one of them should be able to point you in the right direction

Its at least three years since the sessions at the Jug ended. Nowadays we move around on a fortnightly basis.
Next Wednesday 17th The Black Dog Camblesforth
Wed after 24th George & Dragon West Haddlesey
Wed after 31st Jemmy Hirst Rawcliffe
Wed after 6th    George & Dragon
I bought an English concertina last August and play very well in the comfort of my own living room but tend to fall apart when trying to keep up in a session! There are one or two of us beginners+ in the session plus Geoff who is an excellent player.

Log on to 'Folkworks' website. They have an Absolute Beginners tuition day on lots of instruments, including concertina. They also have a week long summer school, again lots of different instruments to chose from, for young people and for adults. The day is in Ryton, Tyne and Wear, and the week is in Durham. Out of Yorkshire, I know, but both really good opportunities.

Get yourself on the Folkworks mailing list and be inspired.

If you PM me your email address/telephone number, I'll pass it on to a friend of mine, Chantal Noppen (daughter of Jill Noppen-Spacie referred to above) who is on the Folk Degree with me in Newcastle, lives in Yorkshire during the holidays and teaches concertina. She'll probably want to know where in Yorkshire you live and to what standard do you play - absolute beginner, learner, more advanced.

For what it may be worth, I PM'd Adrien when I first posted this thread, explained that I had created it and gave a link to it. I've not heard anything since. Meanwhile you kind folks have deposited a wealth of resources here for which anyone just learning to play the concertina would be lucky to have. The info about learning opportunities in the Yorkshire area would be especially helpful, were Adrien to return to read them.

Hi - If you want to find out about the Yorkshire Concertina Club we have a website that tells you when our meetings will be and what we will be doing. We usually have a band session from 12.00 till 1.30 and then a workshop from 2 till 4.30 or so. Not sure how to make a link but if you type in Yorkshire Concertina Club you'll find us. Cheers, Helen
