Upbeat Celtic songs request

I am learning songs in the Irish Trad form. There seems to be a wealth of lovely, emotional ballads, but not so many livelier songs. In an effort to not drag down the set list with too many ballads I'm looking for uptempo songs (we do an equal number of tunes as well). Any suggestions?

I teach a few classes on the Irish singing tradition to a mixed bag of mainly European students, most of whom have excellent English. Only once have I been asked about the meaning of a word. "It seems to be in lots of songs - but I've never heard it in conversation" said the student. What was the word? "Alas"!

That said, there are lots of upbeat Irish songs as well - but they dont't tend to communicate at the same emotional intensity as the sadder ones.

As Chesterton wrote in The Ballad of the White Horse. Not strictly true, but it has some truth in it.

I would describe Celtic as inclusive of Irish, Scots, Welsh, and English music. But, really, it's just a simple way to describe what I do, to people who are only familiar with the Chieftains and maybe Riverdance.

And yes, I'm well aware that the faster songs do not communicate the emotions like the slower ones do, but my goal is to keep the audient's attention, so that when I sing the really powerful stuff, they haven't drifted off.

Welcome to the Mudcat if you're new here Keitda.

There are hundred upon hundred of upbeat Celtic songs out there. It's difficult to decide. I'd suggest that you listen a great deal of Celtic recordings. Don't know what you have listened to but there's a lot available out there.
