I drink a lot of water. Usually, I just get gallons at the grocery... and drink up the lot of it... But today, on account of the balmy weather today here in the North West I looked for something different. So, I reached for some other water... and then, 'Smart Water' caught my eye. Upon reading the label, I found that it contains electrolyte, and was without any sweeteners or fake sugars. But when I was in the checkout line, I had some time on my hands... so I kept reading. I broke into rather wild giggles...

"Side effects may include being called nerd, dork, geek, dweeb, brainiac, know-it-all, smarty-pants, smart-aleck, bookworm, egghead, four-eyes, einstein or being mistaken for the I.T. guy"

I was hooked, and I hadn't even taken a sip...

It is good, BTW... and not too spendy...

So, what water do you drink?

Why do you need electrolyte in your water? Are you out in the hot sun a lot?

I drink mostly distilled. My favorite, and what I would drink almost exclusively if I could, is really good, sweet (not minerally), fresh spring water right from the spring. I used to have some of the best and sweetest mountain spring water coming right from my tap. To me, that's one of the ultimate luxuries a person can have. The water we have here comes from a river and it's horrible. So it's distilled for me.

Generally, I prefer the wet varieties. Among my favorites is the water I get from that nifty filter doodad that is attached to my kitchen sink faucet. It helps in making good coffee and tea which comprise the forms in which the greatest percentage of my liquid intake comes.

It is a little known fact that I was once a professional water taster.

I drink the stuff from the big water machines at the grocery store. It's a lot cheaper in the long run to get it that way. I wouldn't bother at all except the water here tastes horrible (LOADS of chlorine and little floaties) and ruins the flavor of juice, tea, etc. that you make with it.

Here in beautiful Orlando Florida, the water is filtered with state-of-the-art Ozone systems and only the federally required minimum of chlorine is added. It's tasty stuff that was rain water as little as 40 years ago.

Yes, CarolC, occasionally the sun is out around here... and when it is, I work in it. Lots of sweat. Electolyte on a hot day makes my attitude almost pleasant! If I'm not careful, my getupandgo turns to muscle cramps and a very painful type of sensuality... ;^)

We have a filter and filter the tap water ourselves. It works out to be cheaper than buying bottled water all the time. At work (in Camden, NJ) we drink Deer Park or some such bottled Brand.

Actually, my boss once bought a case of this bottled water that was just labeled "bottled water," not "filtered," "spring," "purified," etc. So I read the label to discover that the source was the Fire Road Treatment Plant in Egg Harbor Township, NJ. Not exactly a crisp Maine spring!

I actually sell those filter thingies with the spigot by the sink.
I drink Multipure filtered water. Even though i have clean mountain
stream water you never know what fell in, pooped in or died in the
water upstream, and we have had cases of giardia around here. The
filter i use is guaranteed to remove particles down to .5 microns
which is supposed to keep giardia cysts and other ooglies out of the water. They are made of solid carbon blocks and I have used them for years. I have customers who get them because they remove chlorine
taste from tap water which is treated with that. The medicine you
have to take to remove giardia, flagel, is carcinogenic so i hope
to prevent having to take that treatment!! It is quite efficient
financially and otherwise to have a point-of-use water filter in
your home instead of hauling jugs around or taking up space for a
dispenser in your house. Oh, my, the ads below are trying to sell
you bottled water with your own private, full color, waterproof
labels! What will they think of next??!!

Regretfully, I buy water also. My well water is not so well. I live in an area where rust is prevalent.
Carol, beware of distilled. It has been know to be so pure that it takes necessary elements from your body and rids them from your system.
No matter what you drink, in my opinion, in order to survive we need water. What we put into our bodies is what we will evolve into. That's what makes us stronger, it won't kill us but turn us into an evolving spiecies that your grandma won't recognize!

Tap water usually, though only because our tap mounted filters keep breaking. The bride swears by the tap water at her rural school, must be a really good well.

My favourite water comes from an artesian well a few miles from our summer cottage, wonderful stuff. When I was a kid we drank straight out of Georgian Bay, but those days are sadly long gone. I remember plunging my head into small streams which flowed out of the Niagara Escarpment for long cold drinks on hot summer days, and fishing for brook trout there too.

We buy bottled water and reuse the bottles, filling them with filtered water from the tap. When the bottles get too grody or we get too many of them we chuck the old/distasteful ones into recycle.

If I had a choice, I'd drink the nearly frigid water that used to come from a spring I knew of. I think it's been bulldozed, now, though.

I've drunk from springs, both with and without biocides, from creeks, from ponds, and even from the Mississippi itself (you wait for the mud to settle).

If we become what we consume, what can be said about vegetarians?

In reference to what was said above by Open Mike and Mooh, I'll tell a brief tale.

Many years ago while searching for adventure on a bright, summer day, I drove along a backcountry road until it became a jeep trail. I followed the jeep trail to its end near the headwaters of a small stream. I hiked a vague, zig-zag trail that occasionally intersected with the stream. At one such intersection I discovered a lovely and most picturesque waterfall. The deep, pool that it had formed was irresistibly inviting. The water was so clear that the sandy bottom, four feet below the surface, was distinctly visible. I stripped off my clothes and waded in. The frigid, water was so refreshing and I had developed such a thirst that I drank my fill. I can't remember any water that tasted so good!

I sat on a rock ledge that overlooked the waterfall and basked in the warm sun until I was dry. Then I donned my clothes and decided my return trip would be more interesting if I were to walk the banks of the stream, following it back to the headwaters. I had traveled no more than two hundred feet before I found another shallow pool in which floated a dead deer.

It was a learning experience.

Allan C...My dear departed grandmother always said "you got to eat a peck of dirt before you die" and she lived to 99 years, most of them in good health. Your tale is too often true, especially nowadays, and it dulls the sparkle on those memories of childhood. I have kept my children from the enjoyment of the wild that I experienced because of the "dead deer floating upstream" syndrome and replaced it with safety skills I never used or missed at the time. We love to tramp those woods and streams but wouldn't dream of drinking from them now. Where my parents let me run wild alone from morning to night in the forests and the waters, I have made it a group activity for my own family.

In the past couple of weeks there have been chemical spills between Lakes Huron and Erie which scare the hell out of me, lots more than pissing in the pool.

Rosie the wonderdog is used to drinking from anywhere there is wet. Her first visit to salt water (Bay of Fundy) was an awakening though. For two weeks she was suspicious of even her water bowl.

I have been spoiled, raised by the Great Lakes, but now the lakes themselves are spoiled.

I need a drink of water.

we live in the big city, so I got a filter to attach between the intake and the refrigerator water & ice dispenser..but the water line mechanism is kaflooey (technical term), so my wife has been buying "Drink More" water from a local franchise...has the ozone thing done to it.

One story: my mother went to high school in a little town in SE Kansas, and my brother & I went to a HS reunion with her many years ago. We went to a park for a picnic, and I went to the water fountain in the center and took a big gulp....and nearly gagged! Mom looked startled, then laughed..."Oh, I forgot! The water here is full of sulphur! We were used to it way back then." The restaurants filtered the water, so tourists were not stratled, but the park water was straight rotten egg smell!

It tastes pretty good from our tap. As good as any bottled water I've tried. Maybe we're lucky - on holiday at times we've found the local tap water tastes vile, notably when we go to Sidmouth Festival. Perhaps it's just what you're used to, but they seem to sell an awful lot of bottled water in the shops there. Not that I drink much water at Sidmouth anyway.

There's a big laugh going around in England at present, because Coca Cola have launched a brand of bottled water, and it's leaked out that they make it in Peckham, in London, using tap water. Apparently they use some hi-tech system to take everything out of it but the water itself - but then, since it tastes pretty nasty when it's that pure, they have another hi-tech process to put stuff back into it to make it taste the way it did when it came out of the tap. Then they bottle it and sell it for a quid a bottle.

As they say, Coke is "the real thing" - in this case they are dead right... Real water, with a mark-up of a few thousand per cent.

Except they've shot themselves in the foot with this, and probably badly damaged the whole bottled water racket quite badly.

But surely, Mooh, there've always been the occasional dead deewr lying in streams. I suppose that normally there'd be penty of scavengers around to sort that out. Maybe your point is that they've been wiped out in some places.

there are minerals which we need and
if there are non in the water, they
can be leached out of your bones.
best not to keep it up with that
water for very long. it is good for

I wasn't aware that so few drink their own tapwater. During the summer, my father-in-law liked our water so much, he would fill 2 litre pop bottles of the stuff and take it home and freeze it for future use. He always kept a thawing bottle in his fridge for drinking water. Our water is mineralized but fortunately, the iron and other stuff it is not over the top, flavour wise and is always icy cold with no smell of chlorine. Only real downside is that when our power goes off here so does our water but emergency preparation becomes second nature.

Because both our daughters had been raised on it, they found that the first thing they had to purchase, when they left home were Brita water filter jugs, because the smell of chlorine was so foreign to them.

Someone once commented that we were lucky to have all that free water coming out of the ground. What a hoot! This stuff doesn't come cheap when you factor in the personal cost of drilling a well, driving in casing, replacing pumps (we're on our 4th) and pressure tanks (2nd) over the years. If you roll that into the cost of a mortgage it becomes very pricey indeed.

What it does do is make one very conscious and protective of the precious the aquifer and because we only have a recovery rate of about 3 gal per minute on our well (one of the shallowerer of the drilled wells in this area) and there can be a very long period of drought from June until October, we have been in the habit of practising water conservation for the past thirty years. Fortunately, we have never run dry, although some of our neighbours have problems come September and have to have water trucked in. Might seem odd in what is considered by most as a temperate rainforest.

There has been noises in the last few years that the current provincial government is considereding imposing a tax on a well water. The supposed justification is to make us country folk aware of water conservation and only further confirmed my opinion that they are an ignorant lying bunch of bastards.

Our tap water used to be lovely - ok, sometimes (well mostly) it either had sand or small fesh water shrimps in it but hey that's only extra protein and if it was good enough to sustain shrimps it had to be healthy!
Now it is sparkling clean and tastes like diluted bleach - the smell even gets you before you taste a drop so it's volcanic mineral water for me.
Actually on a "blind tasting" an expert praised the Coke version and identified it as the purest tasting natural water!

For those who don't know - Dasani bottled water is a Coca-Cola product. It's been sold for at least 5 years in the U.S. and is pretty successful.

Also - please note that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration have very little oversight in the field of bottled water. Most municipalities follow stricter guidelines for their water quality that the FDA requires for the bottled stuff.

I live in the country and have a 200 foot deep private well. Our water is indistinguishable from the springwater sold in stores. In fact, when our city friends come to visit, they bring containers so they can take a few gallons home with them.

Wayback - my Dad used to fill water jugs from our garden hose and take them to work with him because even out of the hose it was better tasting then the municipal water on the job site.

I'm sure if I started bottling the stuff that comes out of our tap I'd get in big trouble.

Didn't I read last week that Coke had admitted that the water they sell in England is filtered London tap water?   Tap water is good, and I've never lived anywhere that it wasn't drinkable. Since I grew up before floridated water, and have a mouthfull of metal to prove it, I'd just as soon take advantage of some aspects of modern life.

Tap water. The kids seem to prefer "fridge water," that comes through that filter. I think they mostly like it chilled. Bathroom sink water seems to taste better than kitchen sink water, though the kitchen water is prefectly good.

MMario, don't drink out of the end of the hose any more. They are often lined with materials that include PCBs that can get into the water you're drinking. I didn't know this until last year when I heard a story about it. Hose water when you're out working in the yard on a hot day has always tasted pretty good. But until I know what my hoses are made of, I won't drink it that way any more.

Art, trouble with much of the "flourdiated" water is that the chemical used to generate the flouride effect isn't a simple application of flouride. I have a cousin who studied this--and told me some time ago that in fact the material used is a by-product that comes from a really toxic chemical industry. I can't remember the rest--I'll email her and ask for the particulars.

My father, when young, used to walk two miles (each way) to get a drink of cold ice water at the local train station.

Unfortunately, drinking "wild" water these days -- almost anywhere -- leaves you open to giardia and worse. Too many people....

Once, while training with the National Guard up in Wisconsin we put a few cases of beer in a beautiful, cold, swiftly flowing creek to cool. That evening we enjoyed truly GREAT beer, even though it was Budweiser. The next day we found the very, very dead cow in the creek, about fifty feet upstream and around the bend from our beer. No ill effects from it, except a couple of hangovers.

Another time, during a very hot July, I was setting tombstones for a living and we had to install one of those full-grave-length jobs in a rural cemetery. We brought our own drinking water, and used the cemetery's well water for mixing the cement for the foundation (hey, these things aren't just laid on the ground!). When we ran out of the water we brought, the boss went into town and bought beer. We never drank the water from the cemetery well -- seems like it was downhill from the graves and had this odor to it....

If the kids like chilled water, all you need do is stick in a jug or an open bottle in the fridge - and that gets rid of the chlorine, if that's a problem, giving the water a chance to breathe. (And artbrooks, you hadn't been reading the previous posts had you?)

None of the water tastes like chlorine. Fridge water tastes about the same as tap, just colder. The fridge has an automatic ice maker so it also has a spigot. It would be more trouble to keep it in a bottle than it is to just push on the dispenser. I don't like drinking super-cold water. At the library where I work it's a challenge to get a drink from any fountains--they're all chilled so much you freeze your teeth! I walk down to the second floor where the cooler on the fountain is broken.

In the winter our library water is really cold, and we don't have plumbing for hot water in our building. Don't know why--stupid move--cost savings, most likely. It was built back in the 1960s. It warms up nicely in the summer. In the summer at home you can almost take a shower with just "cold" water here its so warm from the tap.

I suspect that if you stirred up the tap water really well, or poured it back and forth between two containers (using only one container doesn't work well), it would aereate the water and allow the chlorine to dissipate.

You're right, Rapaire, aereating is one way to dissipate chlorine from the water. Exposure to sunlight will also do the trick. Many of the filters we now have will remove chlorine also. But, I'm sorry to be the one, McGrath, but I've got to tell you that refrigerating chlorinated water just makes it colder, nothing more.

I filter my tap water with a Brita filter. I was buying gallon jugs. After hearing something about people in Wisconsin fighting a Perrier plant I realized there were issues about water as a commodity. That on top of questionable health standards, I decided it would be better to filter the tap water. One place to find out more about water issues is:

I don't like soda so I do seem to end up buying plenty of bottled water when I'm out & want something to drink. It keeps me stocked with bottles to fill with my filtered water. I just don't ever seem to have a bottle with me when I want it.

My brother has one of those water-filtering pitchers and I honest to God cannot tell the difference between water before it goes through the filter and water after. Do they actually work? I can see them not working here in Houston because the water is absolutely disgusting and I'm not sure anything could get rid of all the crud in it, but maybe they help in places where the water has less baggage.

We lived in Colorado when I was a kid, where you don't need water filters except occasionally in the summer when in got extra hot (in my neighborhood, there were always a few days in August when the water inexplicably tasted like soap). The Iowa water I drank in college was OK, at least until we tested it in chem lab and realized it was full of sodium. *Full* of sodium. I think those filter things work by ion exchange so afterwards, there was probably even more sodium than there had been before.

Like I said, I drink cheap machine water. I was really thirsty today and a glass of it tasted just like [clean] melted snow. Mm-mm good.

Try looking at the water sources for all of the bottled waters at you grocery store. Some actually come from great places - natural aquifers, special springs and the like. Dasani (Coca-Cola) typically comes from the water source that feeds the local bottling plant (as does the water they add to the coke syrup).

Oh, dear. I was about to sing the praises of Dasani and then I read the post(s) about it being London tap water! I don't think that will stop me from drinking it though.

I was using a Brita filter and filtering tap water, and still do for tea, etc., but forgot to bring some to work one day, bought a bottle of Dasani in a pinch, and decided I liked it better. I'm not sure whether I really want to know where it comes from! (Can I pretend it's from a crystal clear spring here in the Shire, sans dead deer head? Well, hell, if I'm going to have a fantasy life it might as well be a rich one!)

We have tanks that fill from our roof. Old fashioned water supply - free, except for the cost of the setup, clean and pure. There's a bit of possum and bird poo but otherwise it's just as it falls from the sky. No chlorine. Tastes great. Joy

Mineral water from a spring about an hour's walk from my hometown. Its citizens have the privilege to collect it free since 1548, when the community paid 4 fl per annum; now its € 10,-.
Tap water is good in Germany; in North Africa I only used boiled water (tea, coffee) or spring water (in the Atlas; delicious!)

Don't see why Kevin, a swimming coach down on the south coast of England, took advantage of a survey of water published in one of the UK papers. Taking all the "designer" bottled water into account, the best water available in the UK turned out to be what came out of the tap in Manchester. Now a hell of a lot of bottled water gets drunk at swimming galas, so this enterprising individual had tap water bottled up in Manchester and sold it at 50p a bottle. No complaints, people were prepared to buy it - she was after all selling the best water in the UK according to that survey.

Wilfried - water is all I drink! Tap water at home & filtered at work cos we have filter thingies in all kitchens. I usually carry a water bottle around, filled with tap water. If I'm out I tend to get sparkling mineral water - if I have to pay for water I want bubbles, otherwise I might as well have tap water (& I do, too)

I have never liked tea or coffee (yukky stuff coffee, I hate the smell & taste) & rarely drink fruit juices, nor do I like fizzy sugary /fake sugary drinks.

Were I thirsty enough, I'd drink any water. Push the sludge to one side, lap it up, wipe the scum off my lips afterwards. Go to the hospital when I got home. But, it's easy enough to set up a solar still apparatus -- you only need a source for moisture, a vessel to collect the water in (rusty can will work), a piece of plastic wrap or other such material (clear is best), and a few rocks. It might take a little bit, so start before you are desperate.

Someday I'm going to try distilling wine in a solar still. If it works, no tell-tale smoke for the revenooers to follow.

I'm very fortunate to have a well that's over 200' deep. My seemingly infinite supply of water is ice-cold, crystal-clear, chemical-free and relatively "soft" too. Tastes just as fresh as bottled water, takes a few months to scale up the coffee pot (if I use it every day).

Last house I lived in was on a well too, and the water was excellent but VERY hard.   

I peed out rainclouds for about 30 years. Now I pee out golden sunset sh...

we have softened water in the house that is filtered for drinking (takes the salt out, plus everything else) it's so bland I hate it, so I drink bottled water, don't fancy the tap stuff, it smells of chlorine.

Strictly true - the point is if you leave water standing for a few hours in an open container, a fair bit of the chlorine is going to disperse. It'd happen more effectively at room temperature, but the fridge is a handy place to leave it, and anyway with colder water that in itself masks the taste. (The same reason they persuade people to drink beers ice-cold in some parts of the world...)

Hard water tastes much better than soft water I think. Though maybe that's a matter of familiarity. Any time I'm somewhere and the water is great for washing and the soap lathers up fine, I know that I'll think the water tastes vile.

We live in the country and have wonderfully pure well water usually. Just about a month ago it started getting cloudy and it tasted different too. So we called the University of Illinois to come and test it. Their recommendation was that we should either quit using the well or quit using the outhouse. We quit using the outhouse---and two days later the well dried up.

To make hard water, I fill a bowl with regular water and put it in the freezer until the water gets hard.

It's more complicated than that to make heavy water, and involves a centrifuge, manacles, whips, and other stuff I don't want to go into.

To make ' soft ' water, fill a suitable receptacle with tap water, apply a source of heat at approx. 212 degrees farenheit or 100 degrees celcius, after a while the water gets so soft it floats away.

Hard water is water with various stuff like sodium and magnesium dissolved in it. Furs up the domestic plumbing, but on the whole it's good for the plumbing in the body, because you need that stuff, and it tastes better. Remove the chemicals and it's called soft, and its better for washing and worse for drinking.

People often have water softening devices in their domestic plumbing systems, to save money on washing and plumbers. Then they have to pay for the water they drink in a bottle. You pays your money and you takes your choice.

Whether the water in your area is hard or soft will depend on where it's come from, and how it's been treated, either by the water company, or in your own system.

I was amused to see that Coca-Cola have withdrawn their "as pure as bottled water gets" Dasani brand from sale in the UK.

Apparently the level of a potentionally carcinogenic chemical, bromate, exceeds legal limits. More details here

Codswallop. What that means is they were adding calcium contaminated with bromate to the water. You could add all the calcium in the world to the water, and you wouldn't produce a single molecule of bromate.

I hope, someone is checking on what's in the Coca Cola, while they are about it.
