Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Gandy Dancer's Ball (Howard, Weston) From: GUEST Date: 14 Nov 22 - 12:25 AM Paul Mason Howard wrote those lyrics when he was living with my family in Hermosa Beach, California in the early 1950s. In the evenings he would play the melody on his famous zither right after dinner. He also wrote "Shrimp Boats" in our home in Playa Del Rey when we all lived there. (neither of those threads show up in a "lyrics and knowledge" search) See this article for info about the history of the term (I had heard that there was a sport or skill developed by RR workers where they balance and did a dance on the handle of a shovel that had the scoop end wedged under a rail For fun and competition … not for work) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gandy_dancer there is a link to Utah Phillips' Moose Turd Pie in the Wikipedia article above. Subject: RE: ADD LYR: The Gandy Dancers' Ball From: Dale Rose Date: 30 Sep 98 - 07:43 PM I saw this explained by Utah Phillips somewhere along the line. The laborers on the railroads were called Gandy dancers because they used shovels made by the Gandy company. To lift the rails so that the rock could be tamped under them, the laborer would get out on the end of the shovel and use the shovel as a lever to lift the rail, hence, Gandy dancing. At least that's the way I remember it. |
Subject: RE: ADD LYR: The Gandy Dancers' Ball From: rich r Date: 29 Sep 98 - 10:01 PM I've never seen this song before, but "Soo" is certainly a valid name for a railroad. The Soo Line operated in the upper midwest. I had an uncle from Fond du Lac WI that worked for the Soo for over 25 years. rich r |
