I found that one (we have the book) Extremly frustrating - it quotes a conversation including a couple of verses - no information of souce
I think what I am going to have to do is wait till the Irish folklore department comes out of hinernation I am going to have to ask them which one Tom Munnelly (my source and late friend) was referring to
For anybody interested, i've now found over fifty examples of recordings of the Child ballads from the tradition and several in print
A little overwhelming

The one in Joyce is the well-known “men enough in Galway/Galloway...” song. It’s in his “Old Irish Music and Song” and notes its earlier publication in Ancient Irish Music.

That's Lowlands of Holland' Martin - a relation of Bonny Bee Hom (Child 92)
A lovely version of one of the Tunney family singing that in the box already (Brigid sang it, but all her grandchildren make a nice job of it so I might use one of them
I came across a nice Wexford version of 'Captain Ward and the Rainbow' in Ranson's 'Songs of the Wexford Coast' - unfortunately no tune, but I'm working on that
I'm staggered at what's turning up - 'Queen Eleanor's Confession, and Broomfield Hill f.c,o,l

The first time I heard "Golden Vanity" was on a BBC radio show in 1960 sung by Pete Seeger. It was an hour long show featuring just Pete his banjo and 12 string guitar. I taped the show but it's on a reel to reel tape.

An American version contains two lines that justify claims the folk song is high art

"Some were playing cards and some were playing dice
And some were standing round giving good advice"

Anybody who has worked in a factory or on a building site and watched the men playing cards or dominoes during the dinner break, must visualise that scene as clearly as I do

It is from a Minneapolis concert.

Not sure if this is the one you are looking for.

Surprising how much 'folk' there is on Spotify.

Hello everybody,
I just uploaded a vinyl rip of "The Golden Vanitee" by Tony Rose and "his distinguished singing friends" to Youtube. It was released on the Trailer LP "Young Hunting" in 1970.
The "distinguished singing friends" are identified on Mainly Norfolk as Peter Bellamy, Heather Wood and Royston Wood of The Young Tradition - who may or may not have broken up at the time of the recording - plus June Tabor, John Kirkpatrick, Dave Calderhead and Kevin Sheils. What a lovely chorus!

I do like young Scottish singer Iona Fyfe's version of The Golden Vanity from her forthcoming EP Dark Turn of Mind. Her 800 words essay on the song's history alone is worth perusing.

Yes I sing the Golden Vanity learnt from the Tony Rose vinyl ~ I sing two verse before the chorus although Tony does sing it at a fair speed ~

Could get rather long with one verse I feel
