Subject: Obit: Miss Dorothy Caldwell From: LadyJean Date: 10 Mar 04 - 11:22 PM Miss Dorothy Caldwell may have sung a folk song now and again, and she certainly heard enough of them. But that was not her chief business in life. As a young woman, Dorothy rode through the Kentucky hills with Mary Breckenridge's Frontier Nursing Service, as a senior courrier, bringing medicine to the hollows. During the second world war, she drove trucks for the Red Cross. In the fifties she became a teacher. She was, eventually superintendent of schools for Boone County Kentucky. When arthritis confined her to wheel chair and a nursing home, she became involved with the other patients, keeping them entertained and amused. She died on March 7. She was 95. Yet another loss from a great generation. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Miss Dorothy Caldwell From: Peace Date: 11 Mar 04 - 12:42 AM LadyJean, thank you for posting this. Too often, every-day heroes pass into an obscurity of sorts, and it's nice to be reminded that our quality of life has been improved by the work and sacrifice of real people we've never met. Subject: RE: Obit: Miss Dorothy Caldwell From: alanabit Date: 12 Mar 04 - 02:10 AM She sounds like the sort of person that folk songs should (and sometimes do) get written about. This is the sort of story which came to light when I started the "A Wonderful Story" thread a few weeks back. That is one fine life you have just described. May she rest in peace. |
