Subject: Lyr Req: A different Mermaid Song
From: GUEST,Randy
Date: 12 Mar 04 - 01:37 PM

I'm looking for lyrics for an old Mermaid song from at least the 50's or 60's. Here's what I remember, it's probably not exactly right, but if you know the song this will be enough to stir the memory. Thanks for any help you can give.

A bold and Daring Skin Diver went down to the bottom of the sea.
And there upon the ocean floor, a mermaid he did see.

(something about love at first sight etc.)
He wooed her and pursued her across the ocean floor....
He ?????????????????????? till he could (swim?) no more.

Chorus: (sang as though you are gargling water!)
"I love you, I love you" he whispered tenderly
"I love you, I love you" please say that you love me.

I've been playing and singing this song for about 25+ years. Kids love it. I'm always asked to play it when ever I blow the dust off my guitar. It has only been recently that I have found out who the author was. I have transcribed it with the chords and melody if you are interested. It is a wonderful little tune and I am happy to finally to be able to attribute it to the writer.

The Mermaid Song
^^ By Stan James

A bold and daring skin-diver went down to the bottom of the sea.
And there he met a sweet mermaid as cute as she could be.
The moment that he saw her 'twas love beyond a doubt.
But, when he tried to tell her so. This is what came out.

I love you. I love you. He gurgled tenderly.
I love you. I love you. Please say that you love me.

The bold and daring skin-diver, he tried to hold her hand.
She swished her tail and swam away, she did not understand.
He wooed her and pursued across the ocean floor.
She said you will not hook me, sir. I've heard that line before.

I love you. I love you. He gurgled tenderly.
I love you. I love you. Please say that you love me.

He chased her and the mermaid hid within a cave so dark.
She did not know behind a rock there lurked a killer shark.
Shark was heading for her. Her chances sure looked slim.
But the skin-diver, he saved her. So she gave her heart to him.

I love you. I love you. He gurgled tenderly.
I love you. I love you. Please say that you love me.

Now the skin-diver and mermaid go together every where.
Except for once an hour when he must come up for air.
Although their lives be different, true love will find a way.
And every night you're on the beach you will hear them sing.

I love you. I love you. They gurgle tenderly.
I love you. I love you. Please say that you love me.

The music won't do this justice. You have to hear Stan sing this as he gurgles "I love you, I love you." I don't know how he does it, but it's quite an effect. You really need a recording of Stan singing it.

Cheers, S. in Seattle

Thankyou Geno and Randy for bringing it up. I have a graddaughter interested in mermaids and singing about them. I'm trying to avoid the Disney treatment given to them. Joy

More other good mermaid songs:

"Eddystone Light" (of course) which is in Rise Up Singing;

Mississippi Johnn Hurt's "Let the Mermainds Flirt with Me," which appears in a couple of Mudcat threads, probably/hopefully the DT, and also on Mudcatter khandu's MJH-lyrics website.

Bobby Bare, on his album "Lullabies, Legends, and Lies", sings a song by Shel Silverstein about mermaids. I think Shel recorded it, too. I'm not sure that your grand daughter is ready for it, though! It's not bad, just a hint of naughty.

Stan James told me that his Mermaid and The Skindiver was written by Paul Frees, a voice-over artist in Hollywood who provided the voice of Boris Badenov in Rocky & Bullwinkle. Frees also voiced the Colonel in Dudley DoRight. And mountains of others. I just googled Frees with Skindiver and a bunch of recordings popped right up.

Good to know, Flip! I had the impression he'd written that song, but I know he never said so. It was just so associated with him.

Off thread but I can't figure out how to reach Stewart otherwise. I see you posted many years ago about Mick Maloney's version of "When the Breaker Starts Up Full Time." Do you happen to have any (preferably guitar) chords? Many thanks! tomquinn526@gmail.com.

Oh, here's an important correction to the lyrics of the last verse as actually sung by Stan:

"Now the skin-diver and mermaid
Go together everywhere;
Except for once an hour when
He must come up for air;
Although their lives be different,
True love will find a way,
And every night you're on the beach
You can hear them SAY."
